I can think up good plots and ideas for stories, but I can't write for shit. I don't know how to start. How do you start a book?

I also have a hard time describing things and places. I don't know the names of geological formations, rocks, trees, flowers, birds, furniture, types of wood, clothes, brands... Good writers seem to know all these things. Do I have to be very knowledgable of the world before I can become a writer? Do writers research this kind of stuff or do they write only what they know from experience?

What about adjectives and adverbs? I've heard that it's considered bad taste to use too many adjectives and too florid a language, if you know what I mean. Is it true and should I care?

Final question. How do I write about a place I've never been to? Do I have to actually travel there and stay a few weeks? What if I'm not rich? Can I make stuff up?

Thanks in advance.

For fuck's sake...
Dunno if you'll manage to be a "writer", bute you've written a ton of bullshit here amigo
The only good answer to this will always be:
Write.
>>
>>7694857
The only thing you can really do is pay attention to what you're reading and try to understand what you like about it and practice writing every day.

You can do it if you just make yourself sit down at a particular time every day with out a computer or anything to distract you. Even if you don't write every time just sit there and think about what you're going to write and how you might write it.

Is Engel's Origin of the Family fundamentally correct when it says that monogamous marriage was created to oppress women and is the first form of class oppression?

Just keep writing, take a class or two if you need to. They're pretty fun and help you lose anxiety over sharing & critique

I like reading travelling related books in that mood.

On The Road and The Dharma Bums are lovely upbeat short and fun.

I also enjoyed Motorcycle Diaries as a short fun light hearted read.

I like travel related stuff when I want cheered up.

Perfectly Acceptable Beach Reading (TM)

It also reminded me of a PnP Campaign that was run by a buddy of mine years ago. His gf demanded to play with us, and he kept on gifting her greater and greater powers, to the point where she was successful in all things. We eventually confronted him and he claimed it was so that she would have a good first experience in tabletop RPG. Eventually he didnt talk to us anymore.

This book has a really good reputation for some reason.

Does it actually deserve it?

Why is stoicism not viewed as existentialism? If you were to skim through Aurelius or Seneca, everything is laced with it. The majority of people attribute existentialism to Sartre or Camus, but there was more honest discussion one's struggle with their crisis than any of the "existential" philosophers I've read.

>TLDR- the stoics were the true existentialists
40 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
That's almost as silly as saying Keirkegaard was an existentialist.
>>
Existentialism is a particular philosophical movement

That doesn't mean other philosophies or belief systems don't answer existential questions.

>says Christianity is ultimately a completely personal choice that is 100% up to you
>says organized religion is irrelevant and it doesn't matter if there are 3 billlion Christians or just you
>describes a world in which you have options and advocates for Christianity but says individuals' decisions are up to them and decisions and personal conviction are all that matter

Epicureanism or Stoicism /lit/?

You many only choose one.
44 posts and 2 images submitted.

the one that's more epic desu
>>
Stoicism. The epicurean pursuit of pleasure requires a very particular set of circumstances to allow. For many the epicurean garden is an impossibility. It is also fickle since anything can disrupt or destroy the garden. It's an entirely circumstantial philosophy. If one is unable to pursue pleasure, whether they be active or state, positive or negative then one is living a bad life. Asides from that it's effectively egoistic because it requires a withdrawal from politics and general society with complete focus on ones own pleasure. Friends are only worth anything so long as they provide pleasure. While after time the maintaining of that friendship is itself a pleasure all forms of human contact come down to their ability to allow one to feel pleasure.

Since stoicism is grounded in virtue one can flourish even during unpleasant physical or mental states. Before people green text me on the unpleasant mental states part please take the time to read contemporary scholarship on stoicism. One of the big misunderstandings I see on lit and elsewhere (although there are many others) is derived from the Greek word often translated into English as emotion or something similar. The stoic lifestyle prevents passions, that's not the same thing as unpleasant mental states.

Anyhow this pursuit of virtue allows them to be good regardless of circumstance. It is not a philosophy about being mentally imperturbable in the way an epicurean is about this sort of tranquility. For a stoic to be good one must have a good character and do good actions. This concept of character blurs the lines between the inner life and action in a way that is foreign to modern people. It is not a good inner life if one does not act good because they both inform each other.

tldr
Epicurean = wish washy fate dependent, self orientated egoism.

Stoicism = robust, civic minded, externally directed flourishing.

Can someone here explain how joyce is NOT, in fact a talentless hack? I read this waste of wood pulp two years ago and I still cannot remember it without seething

The man scours thesauri for the most obscure possible synonym for every word and if he can't find one to his liking he makes it up. He seems to think that meaning can only come from big words and the whole world nods in agreement

The themes he works into his books are hardly complex or subversive. Steinbeck and Twain tell more engaging and thoughtful stories in a witty common tongue, while Fitzgerald weaves more layers of metaphor into vivid descriptions than any writer I've ever read.

Joyce isn't vivid, he isn't complicated, and the only thing he made me think when I read this book was how far up their own asses most fans of his books are

Bill Waterson could say more about society in three panels than Joyce could in an entire shelf of novels

What do you use, if anything? Why (not)?

What do you put in it? Poetry, short stories, metaphors/similes?

Happy with it? Why (not)?

Pen or pencil?

Are you prepared to have your controversial opinions on all of the above shit on?

I write notes or thoughts to myself. If an idea or experience is important enough I will write it down. It's a form of reflection for me. I find it useful to write down thoughts so if I ever need to remind myself of an experience or idea I just revisit it through my journal.
>>
>>7691296

I do it before I go to sleep. I lie down in my bed, take off my glasses, use my phone's light, and just write whatever I feel at the time or that I told myself to write during the day. Usually it's philosophical stuff or questions to myself, what I'm doing with my life, or what I want to do with it. It's actually probably more questions to myself about what in the hell I'm doing with my life. Like how I'm wasting it. Shoot me.
