why do /lit/ dislike this man? Is it because you think atheist is fedora, i think most of the guys here are fedora tier anyway. I personally believe in a higher power but not like christian describes it.
Atheism is not fedora in itself, but just look at the man's twitter and tell me he's not a complete fedora-lord.
Because I kind of admire religious fundamentalists.

A breakthrough at last. I have received an official expression of interest in my work by an agent representing many names of great literary renown. What a day this is. Just as I begin the sixth and final installment of my memoir, the second book (chapters of which which I am using as part of my submission) has been described as "a curious [...] project" and my efforts praised as being "uncommon" in a sense I can only conclude as being evidence of my unique genius and the interesting novelty of my writing style.
How are your efforts to earn publication coming along /lit/?
I've published a few books; nothing that's made me very rich, however.
My best has made me around £5000.
The trouble is that I insist upon not dumbing down my work for retards, who sadly comprise most of the market nowadays.

Currently just working on intertextual stuff and plotting.
Going to submit some poetry soon, though.
>>7761093
I can't stand poetry that doesn't have rhyme and a consistent metre.
That probably qualifies as an unpopular opinion around here.
What's your opinion on him?

don't care lol

Reported for ageism and misandry.
One of the best poets bar none. He helped numerous artists get published and move up the literary ranks (Hemingway, Joyce, Anderson, etc.).
Nazi-sympathizer, sure, but one can't let a little thing like politics skew our perceptions of such a prized and influential poet/publisher, now, can we?

Well, /lit/, a few days ago marked twenty years since this bad mama jamma tender juicy beef cake of a hot simmering bucket of prose landed on our plates. What are our thoughts?
it's a meme you dip
So many better books and authors out there. A shame that this was one that was made into a meme.

Just read about how Goethe suffered from premature ejaculation.
Did this influence his works?
What are some other interesting curiosities about classical authors? Bonus points for sexual things so can judge them Freud-style.
>suffered from premature ejaculation
i know that feel
When I fuck my girlfriend, I cum in like 5 minutes. A long one would be like 15. Sometimes it feels like I don't even enjoy my own orgasm. It just happens and I feel guilty for all the buildup and everything.
Hmmmmm. She seems not to care. One time she noticed I was upset and stayed naked so I could fuck her again in a half hour. So I did.
Also fuck Burgers or whoever the fuck you're psychoanalysing. Also fuck you.

Why does it happen? Can't you just hold it in? How long has this been going on?
Can't even comprehend.
Do you feel like your manliness suffers?
What do you think of Math/STEM in literature a la Pynchon/DFW/Richard Powers? Is it stupid masturbatory shit just to impress ignorant English Majors with fancy symbols? Does Math/Science have a place in literature, or should it be reserved more for those advanced sci-fi novels that actually explore scientific ideas?
If it relates to the story it's fine.
Deriving Einstein's e=mc^2 as a means of talking about relativity, for example, would work well in a story.
There are scientifically-minded people out there. Why shouldn't we hear stories from their perspective?

>Is it stupid masturbatory shit just to impress ignorant English Majors with fancy symbols?
I can't comment about DFW/Power, but, fuck, man, Gravity's Rainbow isn't that difficult and it makes sense.
He's writing about the change in culture that occurred with the military industrial complex of WWII.
He tied a lot of things together brilliantly in a way that a great historian only wished he could have done.

is Powers good? been looking to pick up some of his stuff.
/lit/ I need your help, I have gone full pleb.
I used to read a lot, now I have reached a point where I only read a book a month or so. I waste my time with vidya so much. I am installing Ubuntu atm so I can't play anymore, hopefully that will help somewhat.
Any advice for a former-patrician-gone-pleb to recover from severe ADHD brain?
This is not a troll post, genuinely want advice.
Thank you
Get a day planner.
Lunch/dinner aside, I have every day from 12:00-20:00 set aside for being productive; 2 hours for reading, 1 for writing and 2 for learning.
I stick by this 99% of the time; save for shit I genuinely can't help. Makes me wonder how I ever managed to piss days away on 4chan and vidya; now it's like there's not enough time in the day.
I became an avid reader like fifteen months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time spamming my message on 4chan anymore.
Here's how I did it.
-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person
-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure
-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult book or one that makes me sleepy I grab another and switch. This should refresh your head. Keep them thematically different. I read economics and fiction.
-It isn't a race. Reading slowly won't make you sleepy that fast. Try to acknowledge what books are for you to read fast and which aren't.
-Buy the physical copies. When you get the books from your own money you'll feel the need to read them to avoid the feel of wasting your money.
-Start with books highly discussed here so you feel motivated to discuss.
>>7759379
50-100 is the minimum daily reading if you consider yourself a reader at all. 5 pages is shit. Set a limit of time, not pages that vary in size.
>>7759373
Find a nice spot to read. Preferably in a room away from your computer, and if you must, leave your phone behind as well. I like to use mine as a dictionary, I just can't be bothered flipping through an actual dictionary.
So, today my prof said "There's nothing in Aristotle that wasn't first in Plato."

That sounds like a soundbite she heard and repeated without having read much of either.
What does she study?
And is she a real professor or a TA?
People love that meme. "all philosophy is footnotes to plato".
Xev can certainly get me hard. Pretty good ass, nice tits. I like when she begs for it.
What do you study in your free time, /lit/?

Half way through pic and I think it's fucking dreadful, what aren't I getting? What I'm finding is that his condemnation of vapid, consumerism reminds me more than anything of the kind of "he looked at her, she was on her Iphone which was eating her soul" crap you sometimes see in the crit threads on this very board. The beginning was a lot more engaging, but I'm struggling to think of reasons to finish this book.

It's poorly written but could just be the translation. The ideas are fairly compelling though.
>>7758893
What you aren't getting is that Houellebecq is an author of mediocre ideas and poor prose.
Submission had one or two interesting thoughts about demographics, The Map and the Territory one or two good thoughts on contemporary alienation, but that is entirely it.
He still manages to be high-tier among contemporary writers, which is sort of distressing.
Classic scifi novelist, or meme author?

Please fuck yourself. That doesn't mean shit.
PDK was damn cool. Not my fav scifi author but if you're into philosophy, the nature of reality, mental illness and drugs, he's your guy.
He has some very underrated novels.
>Eye in the Sky
>The World Jones Made
I enjoyed these a lot and nobody ever mentions or reads them.

What are you writing, /lit/?
I've been writing a short story since winter of 2013. It's turned into a novella. They're tricky bastards to reign in.
>>7758060
Same. Though only been working on it a few months.
There are so many ways to write it. I'm unsure which to use. I thought about using all if them and turning it into a novel, but I don't know if I would have enough material for it.
>>7758077
>I thought about using all if them and turning it into a novel, but I don't know if I would have enough material for it.
Yeah, this thought has crossed my mind to.
In writing this short-story, I've grown as a writer, and because of this growth any sort of finished product is delayed by constant rewriting. However, I'm much more pleased with what the story is now that what it originally was when I began.
