Post your backlog, tell others what they should read or should avoid, and just generally be extremely autistic and have a great time. Here's mine:

Lem - Solaris
Morrison - Beloved
Villoro - The Guilty
McCarthy - Cannonball
Smith - Just Kids
Stephenson - Snow Crash
Lowry - Under the Volcano
Clarke - Rendezvous with Rama

I've also got some Lowry in my backlog, might read that in between Foundation and Foundation and Empire. Snow Crash is probably the weakest book you've got on your backlog.

Anyway:
Under the Volcano-Lowry
Foundation and Empire-Asimov
Warlock-Oakley Hall
Mythologies-Roland Barthes
Petersburg-Andrei Bely(Re-read)
Paris Peasant-Louis Aragon
Temple of the Golden Pavilion-Yukio Mishima(Re-read)
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men-David Foster Wallace
Njal's Saga-Anon
The New York Trilogy-Paul Auster
Childhood, Boyhood & Youth-Leo Tolstoy
Journey to the End of the Night-Celine(Re-read)

you meant McElroy - Cannonball, I'm assuming
i'd direct you away from solaris

you are correct re: McElroy

and you my friend. I don't have much to offer other than that I like DFW but don't particularly like that short story collection. I also thought the first Foundation book was kind of a letdown so I never read the rest, let me know if they're worth it

You can deliberately change your handwriting.

Might I suggest it belongs in the same vocational brackets as clairvoyants and television presenters? A non-essential profession that exists purely on society's misguided notion that it fulfils a questionable purpose.

Not easily.

To answer OP's question: sorta. If they are a dominant individual, they're more likely to write bigger with harder marks on the page. If they write very small, you can imagine they are not very dominant. People that write very sloppy tend to have messy rooms, at least that's what I have noticed.

Funny because my feminist tumblr classmates fucking hated him because he was a racist old white man writing about things he didn't understand.

>finish Finn Wake
>think of the thread on here about how Joyce said the ideal reader would go right back to the beginning and read it again
>try it

you guys probably already knew this but I think its neat

Finn Wake general?

are you going to read it again?

I've only read Dubliners, tried to read Portrait of a Young Man as an artist and couldn't quite get into it. How is Finnegan's Wake?
>>

confusing. Im not going to sit here with the pretension of understanding it, in fact I didnt expect to I only started reading out of boredom and continued because of the.. lyricism I guess.

its just really poetic and beautifully written, I really love the prose

How do I increase retention after reading a book?

I just made a book backlog and have begun reading slow and steadily. A few days ago I was really into a book that I read half of it in one sitting, however I noticed that my retention suffered & could barely remember anything I read.

Does retention increase over time the more you read??

bonus question:
Have you noticed yourself being more focused and have an easier time expressing yourself the more you've read?

Why does Ayn Rand get shit on like this? I get that her philosophy isn't popular but at least reading her stuff forces you to think about why you might disagree. She might not be top tier but putting her lower than Stephanie Meyer is a fucking joke.
>>
>>7809141
You're not alone OP, whenever I read more than 150 pages in one sitting I notice my retention is low. It could be that I read too fast, or perhaps too much but I'd also like to hear others' suggestions.
>>
>>7809178
Stephen fucking King dislikes them both but considers Rand worse.

Hey /fit guy here. I don't like read books or anything, I mostly just lift weights and workout in-between volunteer work and looking for jobs.

I want to improve cause I don't want people to think I'm stupid. What books can I read so that people won't think I'm dumb?

As long as you care what others think about you (and as long as you go about adjusting your life to suit their desired image), you will always be a moron.

If you are actually interested in learning something, I would recommend: (1) How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later by Philip K. Dick and (2) Education & The Significance of Life by Jiddu Krishnamurti. Both are shot and easy reads that shouldn't take you long to finish.

How did loneliness or sexual frustration impact your last reading experience?

we can compare experiences.

I got out of an LTR, read On Chesil Beach, and then switched to two other books rather than reading the somewhat devastating final chapter.

That's not to say I'm involved with anyone or have had sex anytime in the past few months, but these things don't affect my reading.

the fast-paced technological media of our modern-day society. people are used to focusing on things for only short periods of time. reading requires long-term focus. also, the adult reading level in the usa is at an 8th grade level. hence why the king-grey-potter-hunger-tattoo books are so popular.
