Alright, /lit/, I wanna try something out. I did it on /fit/ about a year ago, but since then this has become my main board.
It's a census, filled with some questions about your literature preferences and your life in general. After a good sample size I'll shut off the survey and make a bunch of graphs.
We always generalize and say "/lit/ is so x or y" and I think it's time to figure out exactly what this community is made up of.
When recording your favorite writer/philosopher, please only use their last name.

>the easiest way to become an atheist is to read the Bible
Is he right?
kek, no.
It is a lot easier to just sit on your ass and watch youtube videos of people who are unironically fat fedora wearing gamer say things like "the easiest way to become an atheist is to read the Bible " or "We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."
Atheists drop out of high school to become professional gamers. They don't read at all.

In all honesty who is the better philosopher: Nietzche or Hitchens?
Harris > Freddy > Freud > Marx >>>>>> Hitchens >>>>>>> Dawkins
Objectively.
Marx >= Nietzsche > Freud >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dawkins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hitchens
this thread is dogshit and you know it, OP.
Alright, I'm fed up with this shit and demand a valid response.
What is your personal opinion on the topic of individuals claiming that "language evolves"? Take, for example, this phrase being said in order to explain why certain words exist: mostly slang, sometimes how Americans have different spellings than other English types, and so on.
(tl;dr) What do you personally think or feel about this phrase?
"Language evolves."
>>7853692
Of fucking course it evolves
Typically it gets streamlined with less syllables
>>7853704
It evolves, of course. Though, it's still a fucking cop-out when someone ends an argument with that particular phrase.
>Language doesn't evolve
Which are the best publishers to buy books from?
Penguin
I'll tell you only in return of her name.

I don't know her name. I got the image from /fit/.

I don't get it
It's a metaphor for being yourself.
It was all a harangue on penises and its wonders.
its a comment on the repression of sexuality in victorian scotland
when pronounced in the scottish dialect you realise the title is actually "my big dick"
Does anyone want to have a discussion about this book? I'm currently reading it, and enjoying it quite a lot. What are your thoughts about it? Questions you have?
My favorite book. It's pretty remarkable for its time. Predicts philosophical trends extremely well. Actually had to put it down after 600 pages and resume it a few months later because I felt like if I kept reading it I'd kill myself.
>>7853898
I agree, there are several times where I can see how he predicted not just philisophical trends, but the nature and spirit of US culture. It reminded me of Delillo in White Noise, but about 30 years ahead. How many times have you read the book? I can tell it benefits from several re-reads.
>>7853957
I've read it 1.5 times. I started from the beginning after putting it down to take a course on it. One thing I noticed on re-reading was that the introduction of almost every character is ominous. I especially like how Otto is introduced for that reason, though I can't stand anything about him. The parapraxes are also filled with foreshadowing. Who is your favorite character so far? I'm fond of Anselm

>/lit/ still pretends everyone has to subvocalize just because they do
>>7844885
I was surprised when I first learned about subvocalization, because I never really did it. It's like I just read, I don't consciously sound out the words in my head.
>>7844891
Exactly how I felt. I thought it was amazing that the average person had such a low bandwidth brain.
>I used to sub vocalize as a kid (like 6-12 years old)
>now I need to make up different voices for the different characters in my head
What's happening to me
Would even someone as subversive as Nietzsche have to concede that he is an ubermensch?
>>7854329
He wasn't one nor did he consider himself to be one.
I also cannot fucking stand that piece of shit Harris.
>>7854483
I didn't say he considered himself one
ubermensch does not need the title
so he would not concede not because he can but because it unconcedes him
Recently started reading In Search of Lost Time, found a copy of a book by W.Somerset Maugham, and bought Where Angels Fear to Tread. Got home and looked up the authors, all gay, all gay, gay.
Really interested in gay lit, now.
You'd think a simple Google search would help, but Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman came up who I know were not totally gay or gay at all! Which gay writers do you guys like??
Why do you want “gay” authors?
>>7856092
Yukio mishima, the man was an absolute fairy.
>>7856114
I'll admit it. I... am gay. I want to explore my new-found, gay identity.
