any philosophy majors here?
what do you think of the major?
is it hard?
is it fun/?
interesting?
should I do it?
don't do it unless you're incredibly intelligent and fantastic at public speaking, OR are attending a prestigious university (Ivy or of similar status).
Even if you're getting a full ride, invest your time in something that will pay back so you can have the leisure time in your future to delve into philosophy while making stacks.
There are plenty of more practical majors when it comes to English/Humanities as well, you don't have to go STEM to do it.

Wow, advice from a 14 year old who has no clue what he's talking about.
I want to go through a chronological reading of philosophy's progression.
What do I read after the greeks? Is there some kind of flowchart I can follow?

ITT: Rewrite Genesis 1 in the style of your favorite author
Let ther be Light, said God, and forthwith Light
Ethereal, first of things, quintessence pure
Sprung from the Deep, and from her Native East
To journie through the airie gloom began,
Sphear'd in a radiant Cloud, for yet the Sun
Was not; shee in a cloudie Tabernacle
Sojourn'd the while. God saw the Light was good;
And light from darkness by the Hemisphere
Divided: Light the Day, and Darkness Night
He nam'd. Thus was the first Day Eev'n and Morn:
Nor past uncelebrated, nor unsung
By the Celestial Quires, when Orient Light
Exhaling first from Darkness they beheld;
Birth-day of Heav'n and Earth; with joy and shout
The hollow Universal Orb they fill'd,
And touch't thir Golden Harps, and hymning prais'd
God and his works, Creatour him they sung,
Both when first Eevning was, and when first Morn.
In the bangining Dog created heaving and hearth. But the hearth was warmless and empty, drunkenness was over the Scarface of the peep, and the spirit of the Yawhooo was circumventing upon the aquaface.
In the beginning God was being creating the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was being formless and empty. Full of empty and formless was the earth. And darkness was being over the surface of the deep, and the deep of the surface was being under the darkness. And the Spirit of God was being hovering over the waters like the Spirit of God.
Did anyone read this?
>>7982710
>being a nigger-lover
Yup. Most every review I've read says it ruins Atticus Finch as the "perfect role model", but if that's there only harp, then they're too juvenile to separate the two novels.
GSAW has Scout revisiting her hometown, and Atticus is a bit different...
Without talking about it too much, I'll say that it resonates with me, how you see your parents for you who they really are after you grow up, compared to as you saw them when you were a kid.
I recommend it.

>>7982543
no, my parents I'd say. they refused to buy me video games or get cable.
Have we reached a new level of quirky autism? I've been noticing this trend more and more recently particularly among women. Do the people who do this just want to appear smart?
I tried once
It's fucking impossible to concetrate on the book
But when we are on a train or a car, i simply pick my book and start reading with no much effort
So yeah, just hipsters who likes Jhon Green do that
as a teacher it is a great way to avoid students while also keeping up appearances if your paths cross
>>7981405
it depends where lol
if youre in the city or anywhere with people round you its so hard to focus because youre always worried about walking into someone
sometimes I take a walk around my neighborhood and read. its fine because there are no people around, I don't find it as distracting

Has he ever been wrong?
Free will exists.
He's wrong about torture, morality and middle eastern afairs. His spirituality is shit as well, very vulgar.

Why are so few modern authors of literary merit Christians?
>>7980260
There are few modern authors of literary merit regardless of religion.
Either way there is also Gaddis.
Pynchon's catholic.

What are your absolute favorite lines of poetry? Post them here.
General rule: if they haven't brought you tears or goosebumps it's not good enough.
>>7979221
It's not one line but fuck you I won't do what you tell me:
Ay, in the very temple of Delight
Veil'd Melancholy has her sovran shrine,
Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue
Can burst Joy's grape against his palate fine;
His soul shalt taste the sadness of her might,
And be among her cloudy trophies hung.

>>7979144
I'll answer first
How long do you write each day?
I try to do 30 minutes each day, but I'll write for a couple hours if I'm on a good run
Where do you write?
Coffee shops, unfortunately. I used to write in my apartment, but since I moved into a 1/1 I get distracted too easily at home.
Any publications so far?
Yeah, two, both online.
Age?
23
Job?
Grad student, tutor, TA
>>7979154
Where and what did you get published?
Bite my knuckles worrying about not writing all day; not worrying about what to write.
I gnaw on my hand pretending to read at Starbucks, sweating profusely, worrying about not writing.
Self published in longhand. 2 mead notebooks.

Alright /lit/, since Orthodox Easter is coming up, I decided to have a bit of a rebirth myself by working towards a literary lifestyle. I'm not Orthodox, but whatever.
So I was thinking about eliminating most downtime from my daily routine by adding literary activities to better myself and keep away distractions. I'm also taking suggestions. Here's what I have so far:
> While eating I'll listen to interviews, readings, conferences and speeches online (DFW has quite a few of those)
> I'll read at least a poem a day (I'm not big into poetry, any suggestions for a beginner?)
> Since my French is embarrassingly basic, I'll watch/listen to a course everyday (again, taking suggestions on the best ones, I know /lit/ discusses these things from time to time)
> I'll add audiobooks to my tablet rather than my music player since it's difficult to rewind on the latter; I'll look like a sperg carrying my tablet around, but whatever
> I'll keep a dream journal near my bed at all times, just for the fun of it
> Maybe I'll make room for one short story every day, not sure yet
> Go for the "such a nerd" option and learn a new word everyday since most if not all online dictionaries offer this option on their front page
