So, /lit/, have you read the Pseudo-Aristotelian treatise "On Trolling"?

omg what about one 'on memeing' where you talk about memes like old style philosophers talked about substance, say, or virtue hehe.

LOVE internet culture!!

our parents will never understand us!

>Not commenting on the culture you're growing up in.

>Listening to old out-dated fucks talking about shit in an under-developed language in comparison to today's.

Just because you're not pondering the meaning of life and existence, and actually write something decent, funny and relevant doesn't make you less of a thinker in any way.

If anything, it takes more balls to tackle today's problems, than regurgitating whatever an 18th century prick wrote.

Fuck you.

Does anyone else have this fucking problem were you are incredibly fatigued and retarded at in the mornings/afternoons, but way smarter at nights?

It really is almost impossible for me to read for half or more of the day. I can't seem to comprehend anything and every dialogue (if i do comprehend it) seems to drag on and on pointlessly. This completely reverses at nightime.

What's wrong with me?

What time do you wake up/go to sleep?

Also, when you go to sleep, is it because you force yourself to as to meet a schedule, or is it because you are so tired that you cannot keep awake any longer

New to fantasy books. What writer had the most immersive, put together world. Tolkien's middle earth? Robert E. Howards Hyborian age? Or R.A. Salvatore's adventures in Faerun? Whats your favorite world? Other suggestions much appreciated. Must be multiple books in a setting.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
My vote is Faerun. I'm well aware Salvatore did not create this world. But the amount of books in the Forgotten Realms is staggering. Plus you can grab a D&D monster manual to look up pictures of the villains in any book. Love it.
>>
In terms of sheer worldbuilding, Tolkien has never been topped. Robert E. Howard's Hyborian age is not really about the WORLD - his approach to geography, history and ethnography was that he simply threw in what he needed when he needed it, and didn't give a damn if it meshed with everything else or not. Would it be cool if Conan crossed a desert now? Fine, the next thing on the horizon is a desert. That's not to say that the stories are BAD, because they're quite good, but they're about different things.

Salvatore is just trash.

Another series that has a vast, detailed world that nevertheless feels very comfortable and familiar is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Though be warned, that series is VERY long, and there are books that are slow and kinda boring because very little plot development happens in them. It picks up toward the end, though.

How to force myself to read, and enjoy books. I lost all will to do anything, including reading books. Maybe some existentialist literature?

Well the point is, I don't really enjoy anything. I just "do" things, and stay on my laptop rest of the day after I came back home from work.

Suiwo, the disciple of Hakuin, was a good teacher. During one summer seclusion period, a pupil came to him from a southern island of Japan.

Suiwo gave him the problem: "Hear the sound of one hand."

The pupil remained three years but could not pass this test. One night he came in tears to Suiwo. "I must return south in shame and embarrassment," he said, "for I cannot solve my problem."

"Wait one week more and meditate constantly," advised Suiwo. Still no enlightenment came to the pupil. "Try for another week," said Suiwo. The pupil obeyed, but in vain.

"Still another week." Yet this was of no avail. In despair the student begged to be released, but Suiwo requested another meditation of five days. They were without result. Then he said: "Meditate for three days longer, then if you fail to attain enlightenment, you had better kill yourself."

On the second day the pupil was enlightened.

The teacher had become a maternal idol to the male student, and the student's Oedipal complex compels him to have symbolic sex with his symbolic mother. The student's attempts at enlightenment were hindered due to his neurosis, which induced severe paranoia regarding premature ejaculation. At the climax of his life, (his death, which was expected to still be a day away) he became enlightened, and thus symbolically prematurely climaxed.

How can I get into logic?

This is a good recommendation, but should probably be preceded by something more introductory, like the author of that guide's intro to formal logic book, which I've heard good things about.
I also liked Barwise and Etchemendy's Language, Proof, and Logic.

Anyone else here think dust jackets are almost always ugly as sin? I hate when publishers only include full titles and author names on the dust jacket.

There's just something satisfying about a book cover without its dust jacket; it's a lot more simple I feel.
