Which books will cure me of my unremitting cynicism and impulse to be as subversive and cuntish as possible?

Going outside. I am not even joking. Normal human contact is the best cure for cynicism and edginess. Loneliness breeds contempt.

i tried that, i look at people with such hate even when trying not to that i put people and they leave or they stay out of politeness but are brought down to my level of cuntiness by process of osmosis so there is this underlying tension running through each conversation.

Ever had an action, a pose, or maybe even a facial expression that you're having trouble describing accurately without using a clutter of words? Post a description and/or an image here, other anons will help you.

I'll start.
>what is a good description for a shrug (pic related) that is done out of anger, that physically screams "what the fuck are you doing/talking about?"
An aggressive shrug? An exasperated shrug? They all sound ridiculous to me. I hope someone knows a good suggestion.

What's the point of reading for fun when there are better ways to entertain yourself?

There's no point, in fact

I don't read for fun. I read because I'm very cool, like the rest of /lit/.

You don't have to exclusively entertain yourself by reading.

I made a bet with a friend that I'd become an ubermensch by the end of June.

Set goals for yourself and pursue them like James Joyce smelling a fart. Never give into any temptation. You must become master of yourself.

Ignore anything anyone says. This is done easiest by never encountering anyone. The Übermensch is slave only to himself, and is not part of the herd. This also means giving up modern media of all kinds.

Never tell anyone what to do, even if they ask. The Übermensch is only master to himself, and is not a leader.

Accomplish something with your life that is greater than the promise of Heaven. This is kind of hard, but I believe in you!

And, most importantly of all, refuse to pay, and never admit you've lost.

So I've really started to enjoy Lovecraft. Read lots of his short novellas, and am currently reading a book of "Lovecraft inspired tales", either using his mythos or the same weird fiction genre. Also read The King In Yellow and enjoyed those.

However, I'm missing the feeling you get when reading a full novel or series of novels; the full immersion and fleshed-out-ness of it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for really good weird fiction horror/creepy novels a la Lovecraft? I've found myself finishing lots of these short stories and wishing that I had more of the same story to read.

I'm not sure if the weird fiction genre could even work properly as a full-fledged novel.

This is OK. It's not some literary masterpiece and it does lack the Lovecraftian language but it's basically a novel format of "Dreams In The Witch House" plus some other Lovecraftian elements. It's casual fun.

lmao na but edgy brah, nice

Is there any theory or form of philosophy that can evaluate Works of art with some sort of rigid and unchangeable criteria?

For example: both Beethoven and Kanye West are musicians. Both produce works of art in the category of music. My very entrails tell me that Beethoven is superior in every way to Kanye West, and that even to put them together in the same sentence is some sort of indignity to the famous German Is there any theory or form of philosophy that can evaluate Works of art with some sorto f rigid composer, but how can I validate my statement that Beethoven is superior to Kanye West? How can I use a philosophical argument to show: “this work, A, is superior to that work, B”?

If other people come to me and say that everyone posses their particular taste and that all tastes should be respected and that there is no way of saying that Beethoven is actually superior to Kanye West, how can I make a solid, almost mathematical argument that will show that Beethoven is superior to the rapper, or that Shakespeare’s poetry is better than Eminem’s efforts, for example.

No, but you can learn the theory and use that to explain why something is more complex and original.
>>
you can't. or you can try and be wrong. there's your two choices
>>
No. Grow up and learn that your opinions aren't objective facts.

>>8017123
You can do this, but keep in mind that complex and original isn't always good.

What is the way to write good shootouts? I don't want to write huge long sequences, but I want the battles to have some sort of readability beyond "lol they shoot each other".

I will write things like this:

> He crawled low along the ground. Finally, he dared to get up, peering over the top of the log, aiming down the sights of his rifle. A single soldier stood just ten meters away, a sub-machine gun in its gloved grip. Peter lined up the sights of his rifle and fired, but missed. The soldier fired back, and Peter ducked back. He took a deep breath, then peered out again, forcing himself to focus. He centered the sights over the soldier's chest, then squeezed the trigger. The soldier jerked like a puppet tugged on strings. Peter shot it again, and again, until it collapsed.

I want to make them have some amount of depth, but not just jacking off for 200 pages about people shooting each other. I try to write them realistically but that takes too long so I just write stuff like I posted above.

I do that quite a bit. It's hard to coordinate, especially when several events are supposed to happen at once, like in pic related when they are shot down and fighting their way out of a crashed cruiser.

I am tyring to focus on keeping the sentences short, but I end up using "shot" or "fired" or "put a bullet thruogh" way too much. It just feels like word gymnastics after a point.

Hey /lit/, which art form is the easiest to scam people and convince them you're an artist?

Not pic related because I think he was a scammer, just his art form is what I'm relating.

I've never been quite sure what the purpose of art is, so I'm not sure how exactly you can fail to achieve it but make people think you did. The idea of tricking people into enjoying things is weird; if they think they enjoyed something, isn't that the same?

Why isn't more said about Chinese literature and what are some of the more modern works?
21 posts and 2 images submitted.

Posting what I've saved from some threads about Chinese lit here: (each paragraph is a different post)

阿城《棋王》 is the best work of Chinese fiction I've ever read. Aside from one Daoist/mystic section about chess, it's very readable. 《孩子王》 is alright too.

鲁迅 is not very difficult and《阿Q正传》is hysterical (especially if you've ever spent any time with mainland Chinese)

《活着》is pretty easy. Neither 王朔's nor 莫言's books are difficult, but I find both authors juvenile.

If what you're really after is 武侠 shit like Crouching Tiger, just watch a bunch of 武侠剧 and maybe listen to a radio drama of 水浒 or 西游. That'll build up a concrete kung-fu vocabulary that'll enable you to read stuff like 雪山飞狐 (better than crouching tiger) and maybe eventually 水浒.

Last note: bail on the thought of ever reading 红楼梦 and probably 三国 in the originally. Too fucking hard. But the other two are fairly approachable.

Just read 金庸. Chinese literature is garbage.

weird twitter is fucking garbage

there are five classes of people:

1 me and my actually postironic friends
2 people who think they are postironic but actually aren't
3 tumblr who thinks they are 2 tier, but are actually below 2 and even worse
4 reddit memes
5 my mom

weird twitter is like a 2.5 at best, mostly 3

tao lin is 3.5

i'm tired of reading shitty post-irony. get on a csgo server and say gay shit with other dudes, talk about each others cocks when you arent gay, thats postironic. say niggers constantly when you arent racist, thats post ironic right there. stop fucking posting lowercase silly cadence shit on twitter and thinking its new. literally everything you could possibly conceive on fucking twitter was chimpanzee-typewriterd by fyad and fyad offshoots in 1997, ITS ALREADY BEEN FUCKING DONE

How did he get to be so famous?

Why does everyone seem to know Nietzsche when philosophers in general are mostly obscure figures cloistered away in libraries?

The really weird part of this is, he's never really been all that well embraced in academia. Most philosophy departments don't have a Nietzsche course like they do for say Kant.

Yet here he is, far and away the most popular philosopher ever.

because people who are attracted to philosophy are people who are essentially insecure about what life is about and what to do about it and he's empowering and insightful enough to make even a v depressed person feel euphoric, even if it is only for a moment and he's vulnerable enough that you can't help but love him and feel like he's a mate who feels your pain more deeply than you and can express it more articulately than you and can find solutions better than you.

Having said this when it comes to practical real world application of what freddy says there is next to nothing.

But that just means you continue reading him for the motivational boost instead of doing things.

He's like a very edgy drug
