Why do some people (notably philosophers and theists) reject a perception of reality based on empirical evidence which has been proven to be reliable time after time? I mean, most Philosophy, Literature and Theology undergrads I have ever met believe in things that cannot be empirically proven to exist, such as, for example, an afterlife, an immaterial soul, that kind of thing. They also tend to dismiss any empirical answers to the questions they ask. For example, we have the empirical answer to questions like "what is the meaning of life?", "why are we here?", "what happens after we die?" and "where do we come from?", but the second you actually give these people the answer they claim to be looking for, they mumble "b-but..." and proceed to argue against the idea of a system that searches for higher truths through empiricism, despite the several benefits this same system has given mankind. Personally, I find it a bit sad that many people who claim to be well read turn a blind eye against reality as it presents itself with bullshit like "meaning", "god", "soul", "purpose", "philosophy" and that kind of thing.

I'm an independent artist, part of a art-group idea creation machine of four other men. One of us is independently a successful (i.e. selling enough to support himself) contemporary artist, another of us is having solo shows although not selling much, and the other three of us, myself included, are mostly hanger-arounders who come up with ideas but as far as being shown mostly turn up in group shows or show as our 'collective', which we sometimes do. My role manifests as writing press texts for our show as often as it does actually creating art works. We're also a record label and we've put out some 7 records in the last 2 years. Our forthcoming record is a rather arch and 'inside-jokey' bootleg of a record from 12 yeaers ago produced by a band whose membership included an artist we both admire and despise - this artist emerged in the art market through a sort of 'poison pen' art blog which semi-anonymously critiqued the stupidity and banality of various contemporary art trends and artists - and this record we're bootlegging is the rather sincere indie rock record of a side project of a fairly major indie rock band. One of the members of our collective believes that this artists involvement in a 'sincere' indie rock band undermines his position as an ironic and negative art critic vis-a-vis his now mostly defunct art blog. The rest of us, or at least me, don't think this supposed 'sincerity' is nearly as unaligned with his blogging career as the one member thinks it is, but we all still support (and have supported financially) the release of the record as an expression of all of our past relationships with indie rock, an art scene in-joke, an interesting take on appropriation, and am ambivalent expression of the relationship of art and music, as well as a kind of trollish love letter to this artist who's on it. But I digress.. lol. Did a shot of cocaine and am shooting myself down.
Just got a job at a warehouse, scanning shit and putting it in boxes for 10 hours every night while my family is at home sleeping.

Is this hyperreality?
>>9885414
if they are maintained as tourist destinations then yes.
>>9885414
Sure, but I'd consider that a pretty superficial understanding of Hyperreality and Simulation.
He talks about the duplication of the world, in a hyperreal double, as surpassing the world itself. "The Perfect Crime". The Murder of the Real for it's Double. This duplication doesn't require any video game like simulation, or any VR Hallucination like the Matrix, it only requires our brains and our culture's willingness, even preference, for Information over Reality.
Wikipedia, Cable TV News, Celebrity Culture, these are good examples of Hyperreality. Presumably these things are referencing something in Reality, but it isn't all that relevant any more. The representation of objects and subjects are more important than the actual objects and subjects. "If you don't take a picture, It didn't happen"

I only like to read military history. Memoirs, operational and campaign based descriptive texts, unit histories, first hand accounts of soldiers etc.
I feel like I'm missing out though on the philosophy, classics and thought changing books, but I just can't bring myself to start, I feel like I'm gonna be incredibly bored by them.
How do I convince myself to finally read them and expand my mind?

Does /lit/ write their poems or does it type them? I'm uncertain of how I should engage in poem writing; so I came to ask the more experienced by what form they create their poems
most of the time I try to write my poems by hand I always edit too much and the paper ends up messy and unintelligible and full of scribbles and arrows and I re-write the thing too many goddamn times and take up inordinate amounts of paper. typing allows you the control over the text that a neurotic fucker like myself needs. but actually writing poems down is more romantic, and I like to do that if I get the chance; it can give you a more intimate relationship with your work I think. you just gotta try both and do what works best for you at the time.
>>9885330
Approach in the medium you are most comfortable in. Writing is slower, and may allow you to attain a more comfortable speed of thought with your transcribing. Typing is, obviously, much faster, can can allow you to bang out line after line if you can keep up or if you're shilling bare-bones pander-books
>>9885330
Type allows you to easily tinker with line breaks and higher level mechanics. If you been making poems for a while, you may be hampering yourself if it's anything but the initial draft.
hey /lit/, i recently bought pic related and well, what am i in for? is it good like the reviews are saying it is? i read very little to not spoil what the story is but i read it covers deep philosophical questions. They said it was the best book ever written. does /lit/ agree or did i get memed on?
>>9885267
>is it good like a lot of reviews by people with subjective opinions say, or will someone else's arbitrary subjective opinion differ? because one anonymous person's subjective opinion on an anime image board will outweigh over 100 years of admiration from the best writers and scholars ever

Constructive nihilism?: people are molded entirely by genetics and life experience. So can anyone blame a conscience for "evil" actions commited because of the dispositions that the person was subjected to? Should we not try to come to sympathy or at least understanding instead?
>Should we not try to come to sympathy or at least understanding instead?
If the confluence of our genetics and life experiences lead us to do so then we will.
>>9885052
Sympathy might be going a bit far. But I think this line of thinking is healthy. Certainly we shouldn't demonize people because of their actions.
Foucault talks about the three rationales for the prison/justice system being punishment/retribution, public safety and rehabilitation. The punishment/retribution side of things is just a waste of energy and resources. We can isolate dangerous people for the safety of others and we can possibily rehabilitate them.
But to take pleasure in the punishment of others is just sadism. a form of luxury entertainment.
>>9885052
>Should we not try to come to sympathy or at least understanding instead?
Sure. Doesn't change the fact that you must destroy your destroyer. Or at least remove him from society.
Even in a deterministic world, you have something like responsibility over yourself.
Oh, and genetically evil people absolutely exist. Not as often as you might think, but they do.
