Has anyone here ever read A Beautiful Mind? I've been interested in getting into some biographies of intellectuals that I find inspiring.

Seconded, it's like the movie in any way? Loved it but its more on fighting your inner demons than on game theory

BMSHBBS is interesting and well written enough I'll probably order that one too alongside the Scholastic Metaphysics.
>>

His beginners guide to Aquinas is good too. I'd recommend reading that or the last superstition before scholastic metaphysics if you are new to the subject.
He is a good writer and his books are enjoyable to read.

Start with Ficciones. It contains some of his finest short stories, like Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, The Lottery in Babylon and my personal favorite The Library of Babel. These stories will most probably blow your mind and give you a huge erection. Then go on with The Aleph

I'm looking for two essays by Jeremy Bentham that friend recommended. I haven't been able to find them online in any capacity - and doesn't seem to be in (or titled as such) in the complete works in 11 volumes: http://oll.libertyfund.org/titles/bentham-works-of-jeremy-bentham-11-vols

Does anyone know where I can find:
'Special Obligations'
or
'Effective Altrusim'?

Is that a wax statue or did they actually move Bentham's stuffed corpse over from the museum just for their conference? I kek'd either way.
>>
>>9891618
Now I also want to know who the philosophers in attendance are at what conference this actually was.

I am under the impression that UCL has a constitutional caveat that has Bentham permanently on the board of directors. So, during major meetings which requires votes they wheel his body in. He is marked down as 'present', but his votes as 'abstain'.

So you don't read or know anything about the history of books. ok.

Bump.

I don't really like audio books, but most people agree that this is a book thats best if read out loud, which is something im sure as hell not gonna do myself. If it indeed is best as an audio book, which version do you guys reccomend?

Yes, read along with the text though
this one, which is continued in parts, was done by RTE in the 80s, it's pretty good

OP, are you even prepped enough for Ulysses yet? Not to put you off or anything, but Joyce's earlier works make for a good foundation to understand his later developments with prose.

Also reading some of the literary canon that influenced his later work will make things easier. The Odyssey, The KJV Bible, The Epic of Gilgamesh, etc. Joyce read almost everything he could get his hands on and implemented much of it into Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Without the preparation, Ulysses is likely to feel off-putting and daunting.

It's great if you're feeling ready, or if you want to give the book a blind read-through to see what you're up against (and then maybe re-read it a few years later), but just be aware that the book is likely to fuck you up.

You should genuinely be fine with reading the book rather than listening to it. If you don't read the text, but rather listen to it, you can't re-read some of your favourite passages or re-read paragraphs that are giving you more difficulty.

How do you keep track of fiction book characters if they keep adding more and more of them and you forget what happened in the previous chapter?

How are the Harry Potter books, /lit/? I've watched the movies, but are the books better or not? Thanks!

The first two books are for kids so remember that when reading them. Book three is alright but it's the only one where the movie was better. Four and five are mediocre. Six is pretty good and seven is really good. Overall the series is good whenever they're not in Hogwarts.
