"First paragraph of The Cold Six Thousand are as follows: 'They sent him to Dallas to kill a nigger pimp named Wendell Durfee. He wasn't sure he could do it.' If that offends you, fuck you, put the book down. If you think I'm a racist, fuck you, I will not justify myself and say 'I am not a racist' because anyone who would say something like that sounds like Richard Nixon saying 'I am not a crook."

I trust 40 random people writing an article for me as much as I trust 40 random people making me a sandwich.

That being said if you follow the citations is a great place to get sources for facts.

The Tunnel is such a depressing book. A perverted 90 year old man reflecting on how small his dick is and how much of a worthless piece of shit he is. Does he have anything more upbeat?

Did Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy leave you unable to continue with life due to its brilliance?

Is it the best book series ever written by man?

Were you moved to tears by jokes about towels?

it was the first book I enjoyed reading that felt like it was mine bc my parents thought it was dumb and my friends didn't read it/talk about it with me bc their parents let them play violent video games

the breeze is nice when it's this high up isn't it?
>>
>>8131940
you have to remember that it was written in the late 70s. the radio series on which it was based was pretty radical at the time. truthfully some of the jokes haven't dated particularly well but i will always be a fan of the first three books in the series.

but that reddit post...

>In fact I haven't been able to put it down since I started the first book a week or two ago
wtf? it's not exactly a lengthy or difficult to read series

>the beauty of the fourth book
everyone i've known who has read them considers the fourth book to be the worst of the series

this is surely a troll isn't it?

No, sex is disgusting.

It CAN be, but the only example I can think of is De Sade.

Yes.

de Sade is not erotica.

I don't know what the fuck is going on in this scene. Literally can't read. There was no flat screens in 86' what did he mean?
>Arnold flipped a toggle. The air in the yard seemed to catch and hold, forming a flat screen, then a box that enclosed the grassy area. It rolled a bit, as if the vertical hold were out of synch, but Arnold adjusted it until it held steady.

It's not a flatscreen it's a screen that is flat.

Sounds like he's operating a device that changes the shape of the air. Like the atmosphere collapses into a flat plane, then expands into a box.

What does /lit/ think of this and CĂ©line in general ?

I loved Journey.
Currently plowing through Death. Had to put it down after 300 pages straight. It's compelling to read further, but the amount of shit (both literal and the fucked up stuff that keeps happening to him and to which he sets himself up) is just too much to take at times.

I ended up reading this because of Bukowski.

Most of what Americans consider literary canon is overwrought pseudo-religious dogma, also it doesn't make money/earn respect/mass publicity anymore.
"On August 15, 2011, The New York Observer reported that Lin had sold his third novel, then titled Taipei, Taiwan, to Vintage.[1] Lin's agent, Bill Clegg, brokered the deal with editor Tim O'Connell based on "a 5000-word excerpt and a ~3-page outline", for "$50,000 with a $10,000 bonus if it earns out its advance."

>>
>>8131830
Trying to see whether anything at all is in the canon when it was just written is retarded, canonical works reveal themselves over time
