When you read, do you highlight passages worth noting?
kindle, so yes.
It even gathers all of them into a single text file, so that you get to track the progression towards the latest beautiful ideas and thought-provoking passages you've wanted to remind yourself of, from back when you only ever highlighted nasty words and dick jokes.
>>8149955
Yeah, I underline them.
Then whenever I'm bored I flip through my booms and ponder the notable passages I've underlined

don't judge me you know what I meant
What did you think of animal farm, anon?
Just read it again the other day. Made me nostalgic but that's about it.
>>8149910
I got very upset when they took away Boxer. I also fucking hate Squealer
>>8149927
Yeah shit was sad. I liked that Squealer was aware though that everything was perhaps worse even though he reaped the benefits.
And at least Mollie found love on a farm that wasn't the basis for political commentary.
The last paragraph about the pigs being indistinguishable to the other animals was pretty disturbing tbhf.
SURELY there must be some more like this?

Strindberg - Inferno / From an Occult Diary
do you have to be an avid reader to be a good writer?
i am a musician but i don't listen to music. i've been wanting to start writing but i have no interest in reading either.
i'd rather spend my time creating rather than consuming -- but is that a viable option for literature?
>>8149791
I mean it doesn't make sense for music either
No, not avid. Try serious addiction to. At least with fiction
>>8149798
doesn't it though? any time i feel like listening to music, i always end up feeling more like making it. and i'm fairly decent too -- nothing to write home about but i have a genuine skill.
Any other books about literal cuckoldry?
>>8149582
i don't think i've read a book that didn't have elements of cuckery.
My life. I'm embarrassed.
>>8149595
Tell me about it, old sport
How do you keep up with all these characters? I am on page 150, I feel like I missed alot of the book as I think I am not retaining everything. Is this normal? Also, I forget who is who and cannot pronounce there names. Its a great book but does anyone have tips for retaining more of it?
>>8149570
you could write down characters when they come in, and a few tidbits about them in a notebook, to help you remember?
I haven't read this but when I'm struggling with the amount of characters, I take notes
also, i think russians were known for having several names for the same person, in context with who's talking to them and the familiarity or relationship they have with that character, so that might be a problem there. i'm sure there are a few character maps online too.
With the rise of E-Books, why are novels still printed today?
Doesn't printing/publishing cost a lot of money?
Because people still buy books. What's your point? Are you dumb?
>>8149552
Because it still yields profit. Why would businesses continue to do something which losses them money?
Pretty sure people are buying more books now than in previous years
Some people just don't like e-books
Are programmers the new artists?

Video Games are the only current chance at the total artform, so yes.

Is there a way to buy like 1500 books at an auction similar to wine auctions? I bought a house with built in bookshelves and I need to fill them before I invite people over
>>8149298
estate sales my nigger. I've got some extremely good books from them. but you probably don't even care what they are. try to go to richer ones.
>>8149298
that guy who nailed all those books to his wall in the bookshelf thread bought 4000 books from booksbythefoot.com
also just search on ebay for "books job lot" or something
or if you have a freecycle/freegle/similar group near you check that
https://www.booksbythefoot.com/
Yes this is a thing. Nice girl picture btw.
What's your stance on writing in the margins of books you own?
I only do so in school textbooks. Typically in the form of doodled penises and racist epithets in regards to any color people depicted.
>>8149304
same

I'm not gonna lie, this is literally me.

Question /lit/
I got old books from my grandma, and I really want to keep them, however they have broen spotty mold on them (cover mostly).
What is the best way to sterilize it so it doesn't spread to my collection?
I have access to -80C freezer, autoclave, liquid nitrogen, and lab grade chemicals.
Thoughts?
>>8149165
*brown mold. I could identify down to family/genius if need be.
>>8149165
If you put them into a freezer for a week, the mold should die. Or at least the mold-spots on some of my beer-soaked drinking books haven't gotten bigger that way.
>tfw read only one book this year
>tfw been on the second book for months but keep procrastinating reading it
>tfw it's a Dickens book so I have to read it or else people will consider me a pleb
>tfw it's 700 pages long
Just move on.
You made this thread a couple days ago
Read it, don't read it. Whatever man, nobody cares.
>decide to try and avoid /lit/ (and 4chan in general)
>first couple days sufferable
>thoughts fill up with nothing but /lit/ memes going unexpressed
>eventually this stops
>for the rest of the next couple weeks, spend most of free time reading
>don't feel the pressure of /lit/ while reading these books
>don't have to worry about what /lit/ would think if I told them I was reading these books
>don't have to worry about what memes I can make of, or the already existing memes around these books
>feel like I'm truly enjoying reading for the first time in my life
>overall more optimistic, energetic, and can concentrate better
>even try my hand at writing a short story (not a very good one, but proud of it anyway because it's truly mine)
>suddenly, out of nowhere, wonder what's happening on /lit/
>decide to go on /lit/, just for a minute or two
>a minute or two turns into 5 hours of reading and creating inane posts
>try to go back to reading
>tfw can barely read anything with the same pleasure and concentration as before
Does anyone else think /lit/ (and/or 4chan in general) is ruining their /lit/ life?
Hello Michael Arnold
Well now your solution is simple. Leave /lit/ again, and this time don't come back.
>>8149024
If you browse 4chan for more than a few minutes a day, I think it's a really really good idea to take breaks like you described. Some people let this place poison their mind.
