Is Noam Chomsky the greatest polymath intellectual of modern times?
The way he drives his arguments from one point to another is so fluid and coherent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CKpCGjD8wg
What does Chomsky think will happen if The United States Navy pulled out of the South China Sea?
>>8149483
The same thing that would've happened if your dad had pulled out of your mom's vagina. Avoid a tragedy.
>old white guy
yawn
Hey /lit/ what are some mythological stories where the hero is judged on virtue alone and not strength/ intelligence etc. I'm putting in some tasks for the hero of my novel and I want to make reference to some of these. I'm mostly familiar with Greek heroes
>>8149033
Antigone? depending on your interpretation
>>8149039
I'm thinking more of specific tasks the hero performs, but thank you for reminding me of Antigone
>>8149033
>Hey /lit/ what are some mythological stories where the hero is judged on virtue alone and not strength/ intelligence etc.

Whats your favorite SFF battle sequence/fight scene? And as a writer, how do you handle them in your own work?
>>8148905
Severian versus Alzabo
Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser against the rat armyThe initial hours of the betrayal at Calth
Umm yeah I tend to forget them mostly.
>>8148905
>Whats your favorite SFF battle sequence/fight scene?
Don't know if it's definitively my favorite but the one that comes immediately to mind is the Battle of Dumai's Wells in the Wheel of Time. The gratuitous violence is just so satisfying after everything that has happened.
Authorship and Alcoholism always go together. Why is that?
confirmation bias. stop justifying your bad behavior
>>8148644
When did I ever suggest I was an alcoholic? I didn't.
>>8148646

8/10 really cool ending. Apart from kaladin the characters are boring and seem a bit one diemensianel.

Slow paced. Shallan is annoying and thinks she's funny. Shallans flashbacks are boring. Some really cool parts near the end of the book though.

The writing has a very detached feeling to it. The ending is fairly thought provoking.
>Wuthering heights
2/10
Didn't really understand this shit. Shows how "true love" (the type you see in sonnet 116) Is a load of shit. Guess that's kinda cool.
>good omens

Dunno what to say about this one

Is this real?
Post simple questions which don't warrant their own thread here.
Pic unrelated.
i'll start -
What are some essential things I need to know to appreciate poetry?
What is the purpose of scanning poetry when reading it?
What's the way to learn how to identify hidden meanings and symbolism?
>>8147973
These aren't simple
>>8147973
>What are some essential things I need to know to appreciate poetry?
Meter, rhetorical techniques, rhythm, how to read the lines (when to pause and when not to)
Scanning is mostly for meter
What are some good erotic literary novels?
>>8147816
The Blood Oranges
>>8147816
tropic of cancer
>>8147816
The picture of Dorian Gray was pretty hot and steamy. Gay though.
Attention Christposters: I'd like some recommendation for Christian mystic texts. I'm interested in anything really, but I'd prefer non-fiction texts and whatever. I've heard of Meister Eckhart, St John of the Cross and others but have no idea where to start with their writings.
I'm not sure if it counts as mysticism but I was also thinking of picking up the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, does anyone rec that?
>>8147309
Simone Weil, essentially.
>>8147309
>Meister Eckhart
Excellent choice always.
> St John of the Cross
Magnificent, and it doubles as erotic poetry too.
I would add 2 other masterpieces: The cloud of unknowning by an anonymous middle ages' abbot; and The interior castle by St Theresa of Avila, both are instructional books, but this is relevant since mysticism is about experiencing it, not just reading about it.
best wishes m8
>Oh I heard about this Chomsky guy on /lit/

>Wew, lad. Oh well, let's keep watching.

Did I miss something? Probably would be best to read some of his work, but I don't think I'm interested now.
>>8147187
he holds weight only as a linguist. don't take him seriously off of his field
I thought he was more known for his linguistics work.
Wow you're really dumb
I actually never read Ann Frank's novella. Also why did she write it almost like a play in narration?
What ended up happening to her? Did she escape to America?
Also is she related to Charlemagne the Frank?
>>8147156
Oh I meant to ask how was her novella?
Is this bait?
Obviously she is not realted to Charlemagne you fucking retard.
If you want to know what happend to her google it.
Also the book is shit.
>>8147164
They have the same last name... it's a valid question anon.
Who knows Latin? What do you think about it? Do you think it's a waste of time? Give me your thought on it. I'm also thinking about learning Latin and was wondering what books would be good to check out.
>>8146168
Did Hercules even lift?
>>8146179
...And to answer your question, "Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata."
It's convertible into most Romance vocabulary if you know the sound changes, so it's indirectly useful.
>>8146186
Is that what you used? Not OP but I actually started that same text about 5 days ago and have been enjoying it. I've been reading each chapter 3 times before moving on. The vocabulary retention is surprisingly good, and even the grammar is coming along.
With that said I think the informal emphasis on conjugation and declension would make for a comparatively poor foundation for branching into modern Romance languages. Any thoughts on that?
Trippy edition. What's some good reality-bending or psychedelic SFF? Dick is the obvious one, of course, but there must be others.

How and why do you continue living if you realize nothing matters, /lit/? What is your answer to nihilism?
I don't believe in nihilism but if nothing matters why not live? Both death and live are equally meaningless choices so it's not as if I'm trying to make some grand argument for life, but there's no particular reason to want to either live or die in a real sense.
Because nothing matters
>>8144664
>why do you continue living
Why not?
