Post your pocket journals
This bullshit is handmade with natural paper mane. It's pretty cash
The top that ties it though doesn't have anything to secure it and it's starting to fray. It's really my only complaint. The paper is nice and thick and pleasantly textured.

Do you actually write in that? Looks like it'd be uncomfortable as hell to write more than two words

Excuse the fagotry of my writing but yes. I write in it pretty frequently. I don't really have any problems with it. It's just meant for free writing, and a short story I'm kind of working on. It's the perfect size for a pocket notebook and if I've got a nice pen handy I don't really have any trouble with it.

I always buy nice journals, then leave them in a drawer because they're too nice to write my inconsequential bollocks in.

dune was a dissapointment but i'm an easily manipulated cuck so i bought books 1-4. i was under the impression Dune was some kind of anti-scifi full of trippy spiritualism and psychedelia and patchen or pynchon or hawkes or late-burroughs level coherence. you can imagine i was dissapointed when i read some sunday morning b-movie aristocrat war story with everything cool relegated to the background

do they get ... better? less genre-trashy? should i read 2-4 even if i was bored to death by book 1?

>>
>>8191636
there's been a huge influx of Dune-love that coincided with the recent Reddit migration. you can do the math on that one.
Before then Dune was generally regarded as pretty much your typical cult classic sci-fi doodoo. Which it is.

Also, why did you buy all three AND the collected trilogy?

What happens if STEM god tier gets its way and the humanities are banned from college and the study thereof becomes a hobby?

Probably not a lot.
>>
>>8191620
It won't happen, so we don't need this hypothetical.
>>
>>8191620
I doubt that that would ever happen. But the SJWs are already ruining the humanities. So any serious studying of humanities is what is done in private.

What do you guys think of "pic related"? I've seen plenty of talk about other McElroy books, but not much about this one specifically. I just finished it. First of his I've read. Have A Smuggler's Bible ready to go. But I'd like to reflect a bit before going on. Anybody have any thoughts? How do you think it compares to the rest of his stuff? What was McElroy shooting for here? The odd/constant uses of quotes and italics? Were they meant to address questions of ontology/epistemology?

I'd love to hear any thoughts.

how's about we hear your thoughts you dick sucking fucking retard. I've been looking for this man's books everywhere. can never find them. might order them online of they are any good.
>>
>>8191793
Lol. Yeah dude, I just ordered them online. The Letter Left To Me is $.01 on Amazon, plus the standard $3.99 shipping charge from third-party sellers. I paid 15ish for A Smuggler's Bible. Seemed worth it. No library around has any of his stuff. TLLTM was worth four bucks for sure. It's short, very sentimental, beautiful at times. Coming-of-age stuff. If you've ever lost a parent/close friend/someone you cared about in general, I'm sure you'd gain something from it. Not as complex as the rest of his stuff (judging from what I've heard and the little bit I looked through in Smug's Bible. Looking forward to reading more of his work. One thing I know for sure: you'll want to talk about it when you're done.

I think the Stoic fatalism and bracing yourself against fortune and such is bretty cool but I don't necessarily see why the moralfaggotry is part of the package.

Couldn't one be an edgy stoic just as well?

>>
>>8191506
Yes. I was gonna add "be prepared to be ridiculed though" but then I realized.
>>
it's always been a porchmonkey philosophy since the inception, but the moralfaggotry got more pronounced when the romans took it over because they were looking for a way to be a fascist empire. that's why you find seneca saying shit like "virtue's all you really need" when all that does is protect the state from the vagaries of man, not man from the vagaries of fate.

For my part I consider that it is better to be adventurous than cautious, because fortune is a woman, and if you wish to keep her under it is necessary to beat and ill-use her; and it is seen that she allows herself to be mastered by the adventurous rather than by those who go to work more coldly. She is, therefore, always, woman-like, a lover of young men, because they are less cautious, more violent, and with more audacity command her.

I've heard he's one of the best writers of recent years, but everything I read about him makes him sound uninteresting.
>>
There's probably something to it, with how much hype its gotten. I found it boring and unprofound.
>>
I read his other book, a time for everything. I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of it, but by the end the way he described things became repetitive, boring and eventually frustrating.

when will the next Infinite Jest come along in terms of big, complex, zeitgeist capturing, popular bestselling literary fiction?

i don't know how many of you remember 1996 but Infinite Jest was a big deal in a way we haven't really seen since, not to say better books haven't been written but i am more wondering when the next blockbuster of literary fiction will come along

So we're all going to keep reading during summer, but do you have a "special thing" to do during the season?

Me and the gf are gong to be reading pic related in the next few months - I fear she has somewhat of a headstart on me due to having frequented a course on the book before, but we'll try and get through it at the same pace, maybe I'll ask her about the stuff I don't immediatly "get".

I decided to go back and finish my university degree.

It's politics, so pretty useless; but I'm interested in doing it properly, this time. The trouble is that every module has a shitload of 'recommended reading', by which they mean 'skim read and pick out anything that looks important' - which is bullshit, in my opinion.

I'd rather they assign, say, 5 books, to be read properly. Here's a list.

>Introduction

>Ball, T - Re-appraising political theory
>Berki, R - The History of Political Thought. A Short Introduction
>Cranston, M - Western Political Philosophers
>Hampsher-Monk 1 - History of Political Thought
>Jones, T -Modern Political Thinkers and Ideas
>Knowles, D - Political Philosophy
>Miller, D (ed) - Blackwell encyclopaedia of political thought
>Morrow, J - History of Political Thought
>Raphael, D - Problems of Political Philosophy
>Wolin, S - Politics and Vision

That's week one, of one module.
