Do you guys have any resources to share when it comes to writing? Help the ones who didn't go to college for this out.
>inb4 just read
Alright, which books would be the most effective to read in order to improve my writing?
I personally don't have much but here's one that I liked
http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/tips-grammar-punctuation-and-style
OP I've wasted so much goddamn money on writing books when all it really came down to were these:
The First Five Pages & The Plot Thickens by Noah Lukeman. This guy had seen so many shitty manuscripts, he got fed up and wrote these two guides. The first is about the big do's and don'ts, and the best way to present a completed manuscript. The second is more in-depths and makes you dig a lot at what you're writing.
Now as for prose itself, the essential book is The Elements of Style. The latest edition will do. Good luck with your writing anon.

I found a copy of the First Five Pages and the fourth edition of The Elements of Style (i just used the library genesis)
If you have a link to The Plot Thickens that would be greatly appreciated
Anyways, thanks for the recommendations, this is the type of stuff I've been looking for. I wish you luck in your writing as well

I don't think "resources" (or even going to college) are going to help you.
The art of writing is entirely self-taught, through reading a lot of quality books.
http://thepointmag.com/2015/criticism/when-nothing-is-cool
"I’ve encountered two types of people who are having trouble adapting to the field. First, there are those who bridle at the left-political conformity of English and who voice complaints familiar from the culture wars. But a second group suffers from a malaise without a name; socialization to the discipline has left them with unaccountable feelings of confusion, inhibition and loss."
>inb4 not literature
>what are essays
that was a good article, i read it when it came out. it's true, a lot of literary criticism these days is basically anti-human. but in niche-ier fields, like medievalist literature, you can spot enthusiasm that shines. it'll pass.

Does lit like this books?

I, no fucking joke, read the entirety of Atlas Shrugged in third grade. Every day after school I would come home and read like forty something pages. A lot of it was boring and way above my third grade head, but there was some really hype shit in that book. Secret civilizations, government conspiracies, lots of sex and real fucking pirates. God it was so rad. Honestly some of the most fun I've ever had reading a book.
I tried to re-read it again as an adult and it wasn't nearly as fun, but whatever.
>>8198080
I liked the old meme trilogy better.
>>8198080
atlas shrugged always felt like it was never edited to me. like rand wrote a first draft and was like "yeah, that should do it".
i'm not saying "urgh tl;dr, but it was repetitive and superfluous in a lot of places.
i actually enjoyed fountainhead better even though i think it's a worse book. i could get a stronger grip on the characters, i think.
How do you start on something so ambitions? I've written poems and narrative essays before, but those seem like child's play compared to writing an entire novel.
How much time spent on research? How thorough should notes be before drafting begins? Yikes.
I know some of you have done it before, so I'd really appreciate some guidance. I've been sitting on an idea, which includes a MCs, setting, and themes that I'd like to flesh out into long-form. Any idiot can have an idea, though, and this idiot wants to make something good.
>>8198069
>How much time spent on research?
do this when you need to
>How thorough should notes be before drafting begins?
'notes' are a distraction. having an outline of the general idea is sufficient. just write.
> this idiot wants to make something good.
write well.
I remember quentin tarantino mention this trick he does for his characters, he writes out their entire life history, even if he only uses a little bit of it in the movie.
Also there is this concept in fantasy nerd books called world building.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worldbuilding
finally, a story should have conflict, and the characters shouldn't be too perfect, and their imperfections shouldn't be cool either, avoid making mary sues.
Your character has to overcome something in his life.
This is called a character arc.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_arc
>>8198113
Nah, unless you're writing some shitty fantasy novel, don't do worldbuilding before writing.

Neat.

Does writing a novel make one pretentious?
>>8197954
Well, I suppose it depends on the content of the novel. If the content is sincere, no. If not, yes. Pretty simple stuff.
>>8198047
Also it why one is doing it. Is it a genuine expression of self? Or is it a pretense for other people or an image one thinks one should embody?
If you're a fucking pleb, then yes. If you have to ask, then yes.
Don't waste your own and everyone elses time.
Question for non native english speakers.
Do you read your books in english (if that's their original language) or do you prefer translations if they're avaliable?
I usually buy whatever is available.
If there are two versions, one on its original language (english) or a translation on spanish, I buy the original.
>>8197905
I prefere to read them in english regardless.
But i will choose my native language if it's closer to the language being translated.
>>8197905
English. Now with e-readers there's no excuse to read a translation.
i havent read since high school but felt like doing it
reading notes from underground, i really dont see much connection between part 1 and part 2... is there supposed to be one or am i just dumb and missing it entirely?
>>8197821
In terms of 1:1 things, ie, things he talks about in part 1 come back in part 2, no, there's no connection. however, the stuff he does in part 2 is pretty consistent with the ideas of part 1; he wouldn't have done the things he did in part 2 if he wasn't sick and spiteful
>>8197821
>i havent read since high school but felt like doing it
That's not how it works. You can't just pick a book up and read it.
I'd recommend you find yourself a book on how to read efficiently and practically.
>>8197857
>I'd recommend you find yourself a book on how to read
How is your property doing /lit/?
Mine is not working to the correct end; it is defective. Any advice?

Shut up, my property.
Could you recommend me some books about anarchy? Not just anarchy, but mainly anarchism. I plan on writing a novel set in an anarchist world.
The Dispossessed is a novel set in an anarchist world. so that, i guess.

What makes a good fantasy book?
Also how good is this(Kinkiller Chronicles)?
l have no idea what makes a good fantasy book, but l did read Kingkiller Chronicles and it's by far my favourite fantasy book, read it, you won't regret it. The first book had me hooked up for like 8 hours straight, no joketfw 3rd book never everalso auri best grill
>>8197762
A friend hyped me up when he said he read the 2nd book in 2 days because it was that good.
>l have no idea what makes a good fantasy book
Me neither, which is weird because i enjoy reading fantasy a lot, even think of writing one myself, but never really have the willpower to do it.
>>8197732
>What makes a good fantasy book?
First and foremost, worldbuilding. The whole point of fantasy is that it takes place in an alternate world where cool shit can happen that wouldn't in realistic novels. If your alternate world is uninteresting, or outright silly, or too shallow, or tries too hard (e.g. you make up a bajillion unnecessary words to the point where I can't immerse myself because I need a dictionary to read your shit) or any other glaring flaws in the universe you made, your book failed as a fantasy novel.
