Anyone know of literature that examines the cultural and philosophic split between the old hereditary aristocrats and the new money bourgeoisie?
And maybe the culture of the plebs too but that's of secondary importance.

We had to read The Kite Runner back in high school English class. I thought it was the preachiest, most exploitative, most self-centered, most airport-paperback-store book I was ever forced to read. I disliked this book more than I disliked A Separate Peace, and I really fucking hated A Separate Peace.
Honestly I think you'll find that his books seem designed to prey on the emotions of moms and blog-writers.
(just so you understand where I'm coming from, the style of lit I enjoy is Crime & Punishment, The Stranger, Catch-22, and whatnot)
>>8201501
I don't think you know what the word "meme" means.
>>8201675
I don't "think" you "know" what the "word" means.

Oh fuck, I'm actually reading a book with this label on the cover of (salmon fishing in the Yemen)
It's actually terribly bad, should I just avoid books when I see that on the cover?
>>8201379
I'm reading A Walk in the Woods right now and it's delightful. The movie is tripe.
I've only read philosophy in the last couple months, suck it unless you're Debord.
What is the literary equivalent of the opening scene in TDKR? My professor told me ficciones by Borges, is that true?

>What is the literary equivalent of the opening scene in TDKR?

>>8201364
I do things like get in a taxi and say, "The library, and step on it.”
Is it worth a read?
not even for the memes
Not unless you're 14 and/or wear a fedora.
>>8201385
It's funny. I've been on this board for a while and not once have I ever seen someone actually explain why this book is shit without memeing.
pic not related
this board has a list of essentials book like the list of essentials albums of mu?
i know that sounds silly, but whatever, i don't looking necessarily a list of books that will make me the universal expert or the holder of the absolute truth of literature, i just want a way to start and know some really good books

>Reading the preface
>He insists on 3 things
>"Read my book twice! Read 'On the Fourfold Root of Sufficient Reason', and be familiar with Kant's work!"
>"Ok, I guess I'm putting this on hold-..."
>"Also! Don't you dare read any second-hand accounts of Kant. Read straight from the source."
>Tfw I couldn't make it past Page 1 of 'The Critique of Pure Reason'
So the moral of the story is that ol' Schoppy trolled me good.
Then again, I can kind of admire that he sets such a high bar for himself. I was consoled by how often and amusingly he mocks Hegelians, kek.
>>8201121
>Before trying to understand my work, start from the beginning
Wow, how unreasonable...
>>8201121
what is the point of this thread
if you haven't read kant what the fuck are you doing in the 19th century to begin with?
Definitely one of the greatest American authors. A little like Updike, but he can just put down the god damn thesaurus.
Pale Fire is probably one of my favourite books.

What would you do if you had the Ring of Gyges? Be honest.

Is the typography in this just a gimmick? In HoL it worked really well but in this it just feels unnecessary and pretentious.
>>8201032
what a hack
>>8201032
How is it?
>>8201032
>Everything is a gimmick
Who cares? Just read it. Or don't. It doesn't matter how it feels to you, that's you. The author made it that way, and so it is. Jesus Christ.
Why does it seem like there are no good comedy books nowadays? Are there any good ones that came out in the 2010s?

Are there even any good books in general, since 2010?
Mildly entertaining beach read.

I was actually planning on reading it unironically, but apparantly it focuses more on his life and not really on his business decisions. Is this true?
>>8200933
It's about his daily life and some of his best deals.
