Man is this book ever boring. I got to page 25 or something after she ditches the party to hang out with that guy that her friend she was out with for the night took her friend and she just fell asleep on the floor. Fucking, do I just suck at reading or something? I literally can't will myself to read another paragraph of this book, I just can't do it.

What the fuck is this guys deal with grammar
> I don't understand grammar

He writers sentences like

It's not a surprise that Saturday Night Live [blah]...premiered next fall. On television.

That full stop between next fall and on television, why is it there? WHY NOT A COMMA FOR THE EFFECT HE WANTS OR JUST NOTHING. Have I deeply misunderstood grammar and sentence structure my whole life?

I saw it loads in IJ but just always thought "weird future grammar or some shit, cool"

I am aware of the basic grammar and spelling errors in my actual post. After having reviewed it...
>>
In order to be le quirky postmodern genius you have to have quirky incorrect grammar!

Pynchon does This to Certain Nouns quite improperly.

McCarthy doesnt put apostrophes in his conjunctions and I wonder why he doesnt use question marks.

I'm not wholly against it and in many cases it's to the benefit of the novel, but my inner anal-sadistic 10th grade English teacher wants me to let them experience my pain and humiliation.
>>
>>8207496
But this is taken from one of his essays! Surely one can't be such le quirky durk that one literally writes ungrammatical sentences outside of fiction. I'm wondering if it's just another "Don't start a sentence with a conjunction" type myth?

So I've never read a collection of poetry before and I am seeking to get into poetry. This is a good place to start? I've checked the wiki and have no idea where to begin. Recommendations for books and authors to start from would be appreciated. Thanks.

>The Recognitions
I feel like this book is hard to find in the UK but damn good job, Mason & Dixon is a fun ride. Anyway I recently got:

America-Franz Kafka
Les Miserables-Victor Hugo(currently reading)
The Engineer of Human Souls-Josef Skvoresky
Skylark-Dezso Kosztolányi
Life and Fate-Vassily Grossman
God Emperor of Dune-Frank Herbert
Freedom-Jonathan Franzen
The Black Prince Iris Murdoch

Got all that for about £18 or so, I'm looking forward to reading America since it's the only Kafka I have left and seeing the influence Dickens supposedly had on it should be interesting since I just got done re-reading Great Expectations. As for Les Miserables I'm liking it a lot so far, you can easily see the influence it had on Dostoyevsky from a spiritual perspective.

/lit/mus test. There was a recent thread regarding a Plato reading group. How many of you guys would be up for a Kant one?

The atheist doesn't claim to be able to prove God doesn't exist, the atheist chooses not to believe in a hypothesis for which there is no evidence.

A theist on the other hand claims to know there is a God - a much stronger claim than the atheistic position.

BEE's characters never grow and his books are essentially plotless. They're decent but it's the literary equivalent to staring at a train crash.

Anyone have opinions on this book? Looking to get a basic familiarity with the field before I dig deeper into individual philosophers and wondering if this is a decent place to start cause I'm not gonna read Copleston

Here's the table of contents:
1. Plato and Socrates: The Fire and the Sun
2. Aristotle: The Spirit of Rational Enquiry
3. Epicurus and Zeno: How to Lead a Good Life
4. St Thomas Aquinas: The Unified Interpretation of Reality
5. René Descartes: Systematic Doubt as Philosophical Method
6. John Locke and Montesquieu: The Liberal State
7. Benedict de Spinoza: Rigorous Thought and Severe Conclusions
8. David Hume: Empirical Verification
9. Immanuel Kant: The Critique of Reason
10. Karl Marx: The March of History
11. Friedrich Nietzsche: The Will to Power
12. Ludwig Wittgenstein: Language and Reality
13. Martin Heidegger: We Have Forgotten Being
14. Jean-Paul Sartre: Existentialist Anguish
15. Jacques Derrida: Deconstructing Reality

I have decent familiarity with chapters 1-5 but only very basic knowledge of the rest.

wardine be cry.

do you think he knew when he wrote the line that that's what he would be remembered for?

why is it so amazing? has anyone ever written something more memorable since 1996?

>>
>>8206612
if by "what he's remembered for" you mean "what a handful of reddit2/lit/ immigrants remember him for"
>>
>>8206612

I think he probably thought "I say things like take me to the library, and step on it!" would've been better received, because people who read tend to like books and libraries.
>>
>>8206612
I know you're saying he's overrated because that line is in IJ, but you're also kind of taking it out of context.

How important is a good opener? Or is the prose style / progression / plot more your thing?

I'm having some trouble, as i always have, with opening my newest short; I know what I want to say but struggle for about a week to find a good way of saying it.

What are your favs? Post examples?

>A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.

>Hanno the Navigator, the Carthaginian explorer of the fifth century BC, also known as King Hanno II, is distinguished by having a crater on the moon named after him.

>The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.

>Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed.

I hate doing openers, because I can't find a good one. Either the first sentence is something said by a character, or it is something boring as fuck like "It rained on...".
>>
>>8206648
This is my problem, man.

Or it starts with something like "though"
>>
>>8206648
>either someone says something or something is described
Aren't those literally the only two options?

You guys are making a fuss over nothing. Make sure the first paragraph is good as a whole and you're fine.
