How do you alcohol-/lits/ moderate your consumption for optimal writing prowess? Does moderation matter to you?

I tend to drink too much and then my writing starts to go to shit and I lose focus.

I drink a lot but I don't drink when I write. I usually lose control of my consumption, which doesn't end well. I write a lot hungover though, which is great.

I really want to read this book, but I'm trying to find the best translation of it. I've gathered that anything translated by Constance Garnett is archaic and sucks cock, so I'd like to avoid her. What does /lit/ think?

Magarshack is based.

Avoid P&V translations at all costs; they're bastardizations.

Its a very funny book. Roth was never as funny again.
>>
>>8276607
He certainly wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny, but he wrote some pretty great books.

I've read The Idiot, I've read Crime and Punishment and from the first 40 pages I'm convinced The Brothers Karamazov isn't worth finishing and I should begin Moby Dick instead. Can I double check this with /lit? Thanks,

I had this problem when I was fourteen, but then I wasn't a loser and decided to finish it and it was great.

Thank God I had at least a few years of innocent reading before I discovered this place.

I'm starting college this fall and I'm wondering what language I should pick to fulfill my school's language requirement. I'm leaning towards either Russian or French. I'm already fluent in Spanish (and English, obviously). What language do you think has the best literature?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I like both Russian and French.

There are good literature in portuguese and spanish too. You should consider it.
>>
>>8276541
I'm fluent in Spanish and read Spanish literature regularly. I can converse in Portuguese but usually read it translated to Spanish.
>>
>>8276586

If you're fluent in one then there is no need to learn the other, unless you're a genius, then by all means, learn portuguese.

Portuguese is probably one of the best languages to write in and has a rather underrated literature too. Its really rich. But I believe most of the good stuff is translated already.

Try to find something translated from Machado de Assis! See if you like it, if you do, then consider it.

Between Russian and French... I'd pick french. Personal preference. It is also literally a pussy magnet, everything sounds better in french for some reason. I believe that most of the russian work is already translated to english, too...

I'm not alcoholic, but I just realized after a month or so without real drinking that it's only when I've downed a few that I feel like I have a worthwhile mind. That I think interesting things. That subjects and people I find interesting and worthwhile appear at their best. I don't want to make a conscious decision to become some hard drinker but besides the suicidal thinking everyone goes through the most genuine disposition I have to the stuff around me is when I'm drinking, and I'd rather live like that.

I guess it's that or become a trappist.

what works deal with alcoholism, to keep this with literature and not just board culture

What I'm asking is - am I the only one that feels like this? and don't fucking mention bukowski you hacks. Who can i read that will give feelings of genuineness.

I also want to live in a cell and pray five times a day but I'm too embarrassed of that to go for a novitiate but that probably should be another thread

Most people recognize it for the influence it had on genrefic which is second only to LOTR but few would call it high literature. People who either never read it or didn't understand it will call it sci-fi. It's really fantasy more than anything.

I think there are some strong literary themes though, it deconstructs heroism, kind of looks at the idea of the Ubermensch (at least in terms of a being who ascends to a superhuman status) as a curse and burden rather than a blessing and liberation from man's expectations. I think the series should end with the 4th book since the arc established in 5/6 was unfinished (KJA garbage isn't comparable).

Books 1 and 4 are the best, 2 and 3 are weak in terms of prose but continue the plot in ways that are necessary for understanding 4.
>>
I love the book. Most considerate as close to "literary" sciene-ficition as anything from that sect of lit gets.
>>
>>8276475
Like the anon above my quoted post mentions, the theme of heroism being a burden is significant and one of my favorite parts. I've read 1 and 2, and 2 is my favorite cause it dives into that theme in a really cool way after the events and the tone of the first book.

>shit raped out of her non-stop
Do you mean that figuratively, as in she keeps getting defeated in fights, or literally, as in non-consensual sex?
>>
>>8276468
literally non-consensual sex. The first 15 pages or so are describing Tara's upbringing in a secluded castle and her lithe, sexy, 16 year old body. She leaves the castle to be a warrior and go on a great quest, literally the first people Tara meets are a bunch of dudes who surround her, take her captive without a fight, strip her, paw at her 16 year old boobs and and vagina, and take her to be a slave for the prince. Then follows about 50 pages of Tara constantly being drunk on aphrodisiac wine and having tons of lesbian sex with other sex slaves and occasionally getting fondled by the prince
Never penetrative sex, it's super important that she remains technically a virgin.
Then, through pure luck she manages to escape, and literally the first people she runs into after that surround her, take her captive without a fight, strip her, and take her to be a sex slave for a barbarian warlord. The first thing he does is demonstrate his evilness by raping a 12 year old girl in front of her.
Then Tara and the 12 year old girl are thrown in a cell together, and immediately start having sex.
That's where I stopped reading.
