I think we're too pretentious sometimes /lit/. Let's just have a good, simple thread. Post your favorite book and why.

Mine is 'Revolutionary Road'. Sure, it is a fairly simple book but I enjoy it. I think I identify with it because I am also a man forced to do a job that sucks the energy clean out of me, to live a life I moderately disdain; all with a woman I merely tolerate.

I like to write. I am aware that I most likely don’t do so very well, but from time to time I like to write down whatever little story comes to my mind while I go about. I never really write much though. Sometimes I get these spurs where I write maybe five to six pages over the course of a couple days, but when I then later look back at what I have written I just get this feeling that it is shitty and ridiculous. I mean what am I even trying to do here? Everything seems to be so generic, used up and overdone. Nothing I write seems to have any originality, and only tells the same story that already has been told a thousand times before, probably better. I am not a writer, and nor do I have plans to become one. I don’t plan on showing people what I write. Its just something for myself. But it takes away the motivation. I am aware of the fact that I here seem like some ridiculous whiny idiot with too much time on his hands and nothing to complain about. Feel free to do so you too if you wish.

I was just wondering if anyone maybe felt the same way or what others may think of these thoughts.

do you WRITE on paper or do you type shit?
>>
If you feel its generic then see how you can approach it in a different way and what elements you can add.

If you feel you have some technical issues then study up to see what you can do about it.

Also, the people who say "everything's been done before" are fucking stupid. Forget them.

>On a thousand bridges and piers shall they throng to the future, and always shall there be more war and inequality among them: thus does my great love make me speak! Inventors of figures and phantoms shall they be in their hostilities; and with those figures and phantoms shall they yet fight with each other the supreme fight! Good and evil, and rich and poor, and high and low, and all names of values: weapons shall they be, and sounding signs, that life must again and again surpass itself!

And people try to tell me that Nietzsche didn't read Stirner? Please.

Which books of the bible should I read?

Preferably all of them, but if not:

Read the Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Number, Deuteronomy.

Read the beautiful stuff: Ecclesiastes, Job, Song of Solomon

Read Isaiah, the only prophetic work required to fully understand the weight of the NT

Read all of the Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Read Acts.

Primary Epistles: Romans, Corinthians, Ephesians, Timothy, Hebrews, 1/2/3 John

And of course read Revelation.
>>
>>8281625
All of these and also Daniel
>>
>>8281625
lol don't read Leviticus or Numbers or Deuteronomy unless you really want to. It isn't necessary unless for study.

Also not mentioned, Proverbs and Isaiah

Is this one of Pynchon's worst? I've read Lot 49, Inherent Vice, and some of Bleeding Edge. I'm really not getting Bleeding Edge so far. I want to try V. and GR eventually, but if it's like this, I think I'll pass.

I always had a passion for it but never realised it and now I want to do it and also to replace my habit of playing computer games with it.So my question is how should I begin If I want to get the best out of a book(to understand it fully).Should I just google all the terminology or there is a book that have them all explained deeply and the same with analysis(is there a good site for it or I should google it and just read all the results.)Also feel free to share any tips or things that you think might be helpful.Oh and in case youre wonder I obviously read a lot of books already just want to really focus on literature and experience it properly.

Look at lit's list of recommended literature and go for the one you recognize for hearing about them before.
If you tell me what sort of things you like we could advise you better.
Read literature of your own language first obviously.

and am also really interested in surrealism(i know its a broad term) but am not sure if i'm literate enough to really read such literature.

Really?I'm really interested in my country's literature but I thought they were probably influenced by west writers so I thought I might miss the point.

you've spooked yourself, you don't know what passion is, the closest you've come to experiencing it has been the mind-numbing æther of vidya which you've let yourself luxuriate in for the entire nascence of your degenerate life

So, other than Paradife Loft, Lycidas, Il penseroso, l'allegro and a handful of his essays, are Milton's other works worth reading? I mean, I know they're worth reading; but are they worth investing the time to look up sources, explanations, critical insights, etc? I've read a few of his sonnets and they seem more like exercises in the form than meaningful contributions to his work as a whole.

Lit, how do I be a bad writer?

Unlike you guys, I don't want to write well. I want to write awfully. But I keep writing stuff and it ends up coming out good, or interesting. It's maddening and there's no real help on this front.

I thought maybe you'd know better than anyone else.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Sample of my work
>Ahhhh the turd said as it slid out of an anus and was flushed away to the sewers, feeling bliss. For you see to the turd this was the end of a long and arduous life-cycle that begun as part of a cow. Now he was going to dissolve into water, be purified, and one with the Earth. Briefly, before his consciousness left him, he felt a sense of gratitude for all the humans who made this possible. The Tao was real.

See this isn't actually that bad. People want to keep reading and I don't know why. It doesn't matter how repugnant I make the subject matter or how ridiculous the writing is. People just gobble it up. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, guys.

Thanks,
Jeremy

That's half like asking how do i become bad at the science of physics, and half like asking how do i become bad at carpentry... you can't accomplish the former without intentionally causing harm to your brain, probably. The answer to the latter is obvious but you probably think it's too obvious so you dismiss it. You become bad at carpentry by not doing the things you are supposed to do to be good at carpentry in the way you are supposed to do them. Which is a little interesting because it means that only good writers can write in the absolute worst way (technically worst, mind you, not in the most "repulsive" way which is another topic.) Somewhat like how only someone knowledgeable of laws can break all of them when one would expect the thief or murderer for example to be the greatest lawbreaker. The idea behind skill acquisition is interesting in this way: It -conceptually but not neurologically speaking- has to do with learning all the things that are wrong by learning the exact small set of things which are correct, thus enabling you to avoid the most amount mistakes... So to write the worst be the absolute best writer or as good a writer as a human can be... and in this vein you can dial it down and commit as many mistakes as you can according to your knowledge.
>>
>>8281527
(im obviously only assuming you "would be good at physics and carpentry". Whether or not you actually are is besides the point.)

Peter Ackroyd's biography of London is excellent.

Apart from that, the quintessential London author is Dickens.

>Richard K. Morgan's books are generally set in a post-extropianist dystopian world. Morgan described his "takeaway" of one of his books as

>Society is, always has been and always will be a structure for the exploitation and oppression of the majority through systems of political force dictated by an élite, enforced by thugs, uniformed or not, and upheld by a wilful ignorance and stupidity on the part of the very majority whom the system oppresses.

God damn, why are sci fi authors such faggots? Even Robert Heinlein had to insert polyamory into everything he wrote.

The Kovacs novels are great but so many sci fi authors are left-wing faggots who think they're edgy and cool for reciting the same marxist horse shit they were taught in school and TV.

At least Orson Scott Card actually has balls.

Islam is part of our daily lives wether we want or not. I for one would like to learn more about it, since I know so little. Thus my question is, are there any books you could recommend that deal with Islam? Fact or fiction, both would be good, although I'd rather read some fact first. And please don't tell me to just read wikipedia, I've done that but I find it to be very boring and would rather read an actual book.

But really is it not the thought of The Other we expose ourselves to? And is it not natural to make it the proper noun, for it represents to us the only thing without ourselves, the Pozzo to our Estragon. What I am trying to say here is that when we cry out for multiple interpretation is it not the case that we wish the universe to agree with us, rather than us to agree with the universe and so on.
