hey guys who posted about travesty the other day, I just finished it. what was the deeper meaning? it was interesting. is the main character god? judging the poet for his sins? I was surprised by the quality of the writing. you would think more people would have read this book. it's neat and evil.
bump. do you people not read?
Haven't read any Hawkes. Was thinking about picking up The Blood Oranges about two months ago but I got The Ice-Shirt instead.

I wasn't all that into the book.
Except the kinky bits about dads interest in daughters sex life. And the fact that he gonna kill his daughter and the guy who cucked him.
What are /lit/'s favourite books about cute boys?
Death in Venice by Thomas Mann gets my vote.

Can I get an honest critique of this section I'm writing. Thanks.
The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sage thicket. "Vámonos, amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintcraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. Then they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.
>>8308726
Pacing is strange in no small part to your overuse of adjectives.
>>8308726
Blood Meridian/10.
Biblical. Majestic. Awe-inspiring. Terse, yet compelling. The imagery. The adjectives. The local colour. The authenticity. The all-conquering evil. The everlasting cosmic forces. The parables. The morals. The appropriate application of obscure Mexican colloquialisms.
The first two times I had to put it down. I couldn't make it. I put the phone face down on the table and thought about something else for a while (should I do the dishes now or should I just skip town?). The third time I only made it to "friscalating". Only now I powered on through to "dusklight".
Dusklight. Dusk light. The light of dusk. I...it's just...
>friscalating
Is it true that the author barely gets 10% of the book sales?
>>8308724
With traditional publishing, yes. Amazon gives you a 35-70% cut depending on your book's price, whether it's public domain or not and what country it's sold in, but then you'll have to figure out how to advertise it on your own.
>>8308724
Yes, but people who complain about this also tend to assume that the publisher gets a humongous cut when in reality all parties involved from printer to store get roughly the same cut as the author.
Am I stupid when I don't understand judge Holden's monologues?
I just read it and was pretty confused by a lot of the things he said.
I think they are supposed to be ambiguous though.
They seem to imply he is actually a supernatural being at some points unless I am misreading completely.
What monologue?
Post it and we'll tell you if you're stupid.
>>8308722
Yes because you're dumb enough to think there's anything to understand in bloodmeme.
Who should claim him, Germany or the Czech Republic? What about all those Romans who wrote in Greek? And Slavs who go to Paris and write in French?

This. And you must not have read Nietzsche right, or you literally glossed over the Antichrist or some shit. Go back to BGE or the Gay Science. You operate off of hundreds of thousands of dogma. Stop acting like you are a nonentity, ya fedor tipping pleb.
more like this?
His Baudolino is similarly excellent, more of a comfy romp, or Foucault's Pendulum if you like conspiracy theories
>tfw you'll never have a debut novel like this
Possibly similar books from other authors:
- Laurus
- The Glass Bead Game
- Cryptonomicon
- The Magus
That's all I can think of right now.

What did she mean by this? Did she recognize me as il/lit/erate? Was she just tired and cranky? Was she just trying and failing at being friendly? I really feel like she put some venom in that question
>>8308552
Even if you weren't reading entirely too much into this and it even slightly mattered what your librarian thinks, and even if it weren't by default true that you are a fucking idiot simply because you're like 20, who gives a shit?
Anyway you are young. And every year she gets further away from that age and the new generation of college freshman look younger.
>>8308552
>Was she failing at being friendly?
I get the feeling that happens in most situations for you.
>>8308552
She was complementing you for looking young, my young autistic friend. Do not perceive others as failing to be friendly because your own insecurities have taken hold. Not everything another person says is an attack on you. Pay attention to their eyes, the way they say things, and the connotation they give to their words.
I am looking for a book about art of cinematography for a beginner. Is there any book /lit/ would recommend?

Hi /lit/, I'm a bit insecure about my writing skills and was wondering if I could get some feedback on a couple paragraphs I wrote. If this a shitty thing to ask for here then just sage/ignore this, but if you've got the time and interest I'd be interested in your feedback. I just want to know what level my grammar and vocabulary is at. The passage is as follows:
"Hey there, I just completed my first year of school and am at an odds to what specific career path I should take. There are a couple that stick out in my mind, however I wanted to get some feedback if at all possible based off my circumstances.
I'm currently in a three year diploma program focused specifically on programming, have a good GPA and the potential to transfer into university if I get a couple more math credits under my belt. Odds are I'll just graduate with the diploma, but if I find I really need to go to university for what I want then I'll probably do it.
Currently I'm considering systems development for Android or some sort of job as a Database Developer. I'm leaning towards DD because it might be an easier job to get with just a diploma, however I'm more interested in working with phones and primarily with OOP programming languages vs things like SQL.
I figure that now is a good time to have a solid path figured out, but again I'm not sure which would be best given the current job market and my credentials. Not to mention that I likely don't have a full understanding of the jobs available in such a broad market."

You have entry level drone written all over you.
>>8308534
What does that even mean?
>>8308542
My advice is to get to the point first, and then justify it. You meander and talk in vague generalities, like a woman.
Why are you writing me?
What do you know?
What can you do?
What are some classics/literature that writes about the horrifying experience of war and the mental toll it has on soldiers?
>Excluding YA-tier novels.
>Only WWII, WWI or pre-world war (if there is anything good that far back).

How much of your library is pirated?
90% for me
>>8308429
Maybe ~50%. I own 1,300, own about the same number of ebooks. But there is overlap, especially since some of the ebooks are ones I scanned myself.
i used to download shit all the time. i must have thousands of ebooks i'll never read. my physical collection is only a couple hundred books.
if we're going by books actually read, i'd say it's more like 70/30 obtained through legal means / pirated.
