How do you know when you're 'ready' for the big books like J R, Gravity's Rainbow, Ulysses, or IJ?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Infinite Jest is pretty accessible. I'd recommend reading some easier literature, get to know your high school core and read some other, tougher stuff. Then you're probably ready. Also, you don't need to read all of the high school core books.
>>
>>8313358
IJ isn't difficult, so you're ready.

JR is easy if you didn't struggle with any of the ambiguity of sudden dialogue in IJ and was able to keep track of the characters.

You can read Ulysses after reading Dubliners and Portrait.

Skip GR, it's trash.
>>
>>8313372
GR is equal to if not better than Ulysses.

"Meme". It's the central device of the book. In the passage describing Hell, it's described as sustaining the soul while torturing every part of it. That's Stephen's relationship to provincial, kitschy Irish nationalism and stern Catholic doctrine. He starts off as an innocent wide-eyed toddler, he gets his head stuffed with ideology, then as he becomes more independent and intelligent he has an awakening and is able to reconcile with his upbringing.

Thoughts on The Dark Tower series? I found volumes one and four at my local goodwill. Are they any good, or just trite?

Volumes I and IV are actually the only good ones, in my opinion. If you've read King before, you'll notice he tends to start well and then do weird shit by the end and it ends disappointingly. Volume IV deals with a part of the protagonist's past and I really like it. It would have made a fine story by itself.

If you have the patience and time to read them all (last ones get big), read something better. Read Tolkien if you are into that genre. Or Harry Potter, since it has the same literary quality as The Dark Tower. TDT even references Harry Potter

You don't. Koreans can simply never be /lit/. The Chinese and the Japanese write and have fantastic traditions and culture. Korean women spend all of their time wishing they were white, and Korean men all play video games all day and never reproduce.

Not only did you marry a womeme, you married a womeme from the memest country in Asia.

ok retards, give me a proper definition of what is good writing, what are it's elements and characteristics, styles, use of prose.

unless you're all faggots who can only talk shit but have never read a lot of books.

I'm sure you can give your own personal definition of what at least you consider good writing.

Good writing is too varied to narrow it down like that.
>>
>>8313198
so it seems you don't even have a personal definition of what you consider good writing.

it seems you don't read as much.
>>

I do read a lot. Any big reader knows that great literature has a huge variety of styles and different areas of focus. Maybe a certain inevitability to how sentences are formed, what words are used, so everything is in its right place? But I've read different versions of translated works and enjoyed and learned from them all.

The only thing I can think of that's common to all great writing is that after reading it, I feel like I've learned more about the world and its people, including myself. Writers do this in many different ways, and I can't think of any distinct thing in common to all of them.

>Actor company goes to remote villa to rehearse a play/film a movie, something like that
>Spooky shit going on, some people disappear or something, they end up in a hell-like place with some demon king or maybe satan himself, and the floor is literally made of skulls
Not much to go on I know, but there's one scene I distinctly remember where a guy gets raped by a witchy lady, he's bound on the bed and the lady pours rotten fruit juice on his limp dick, at which point a whole lot of bats come out of her closet/chimney/whatever and suck on his fruit juice-soaked dick. This gives him a boner and then she sexes him ofc.
Anyone recognize this? Don't think I finished it (I was probably too young for this kind of stuff) but I would like to read it again.

What an eventful day. Today at around eleven am I heard several rhythmic knocks on the front door of the cabin in which I am staying for a year in order to write a novel. I answered the door and there stood the girl who I saw swimming earlier in the week, who is the granddaughter of the woman who visited my cabin last Saturday to welcome me to the area and talk about her life. This girl is beautiful. My god. She has pale skin and brown hair which is neither noticeably dark nor light. I was wearing my black cotton pleated trousers and another white cotton shirt (I like the image of Salinger wearing something similar, and I fear that wearing something more casual, such as sweatpants, will encourage a lack of self-discipline or an unserious attitude towards my work) and she said "are you the writer?". I replied "well I'm no published" and felt rather embarrassed about her question, as if she was mocking me or as if she knew she had "something over me" because I am living the way I am. She put out her hand and said "hello I'm Anna" and explained (without needing to) that her grandmother lives nearby. She studies literature! My god. I felt even more stupid when I found that out. I asked her what authors she is studying and she told me, and mentioned she was reading "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Petterson. It's quite a popular novel here in Norway and I have read it and know a lot about the author's life also and his other works. I asked if she had read his first book "Ashes in My Mouth, Sand in My Shoes" but she said no and I explained that it was good and then ranted a little about his life and how he was first published in his late 30s and she said "cool, I'd like to read it, sounds good!" and laughed a little bit. We talked for around ten minutes on my doorstep, me standing inside the cabin and holding the door open and she outside, and then she said "well I won't keep you, nice to meet you, maybe I'll see you around sometime". I said it was nice to meet her to and then stupidly said "good luck" when she was walking away with her back turned. I felt so stupid saying that and immediately closed the door not to see her reaction. I then realized how rude it was not to invite her inside. Damn it. But at seven thirty pm I decided it was still early enough in the day to go and visit her so I found my copy of "Ashes in My Mouth, Sand in My Shoes" which I luckily brought along and walked down to her grandmother's home. It is rather warm and I hate this level of warmth and the brightness of the sun and I don't appear very handsome or attractive when I'm outside in this weather, but still I didn't want to miss my chance at least getting to know someone who seems nice and interesting.

This.
Also watch Scorsese's early works. Tarantino's character are way too eloquent.

Bro bodybuilders ruined the word "aesthetics".

I know their misuse of the word is intentional because you don't want to sound homo when you compliment a dude. Sure, calling a dude "aesthetic" is actually gayer than calling him beautiful, but perhaps that's the actual joke. Regardless, they created this entire avalanche and now we have mentally challenged kids who want to sound smart so they throw the word around whenever they can.

Nothing is "pretty" or "beautiful" anymore, instead "X is aesthetic". It's not only cringeworthy, but incorrect use of the word. Something may have "aesthetic qualities", but it cannot "be aesthetic".

Is there something that can be done to alleviate this? Do all teenagers, college students and other quasi-intellectuals need to be gassed?

I like to think it evolves, but if there's no tongue-in-cheek self awareness when you abuse a word like this, it's just devolving, really.
