Women read more, but do they read more actual literature? Or do they just read young adult and erotica?

It's like how there are more women going to university, but they don't go into the hard STEM fields.

Does anyone have any statistics on this on preferable genres based on gender?

>>
most men don't read at all, or else they just read genre fiction, which isn't really reading.
>>
I suppose it depends from person to person. I'd love to see some statistics on that but I don't think there would be.

I don't know, but I generally see more women reading 'proper' literature at my uni. Most of the time when it's a guy reading literature, they're usually reading some entry level meme shit like Thus Spoke Zarathustra or The Old Man and The Sea. Once I saw a dude reading IJ whilst waiting for the train, and I questioned why he would lug such a huge book around just for the sake of reading it outdoors.

Why is the English language (and the UK in particular) so dominant when it comes to literature?

Over the past thousand years, there's been literally no competition. More recently its greatest competition is the USA (a former colony using the same language and drawing on the same rich tradition that language brings with it).

Does literature work in the same way as economics (the best way to make more money is to be rich to begin with) or is this purely cultural bias and e.g. English, French, Somali, Italian, German etc. literary traditions are all equally good.

When book-reading was "the" craze it was all French literature, French culture pretty much dominated Western culture until the 1850s. Why do you think all those Russians in Dostoevsky use French bonmots and not English ones?

I spent my childhood reading these.

Learning the history of ancient civilisations necessitates learning about their belief systems. It's impossible to read Plato without understanding what it meant to live in Attic Greece and to worship at the temple of Apollo, or what relationship the Oracle had with divine truth in the mind of the people.

Amusingly enough we fully understand that we can't know a person or people - in a historical sense - without engaging with what they believe to be true - if someone shoots up the place while believing in the concept of Jihad and maryrdom from Islam, mainstream society doesn't want to engage with it and in this instance likes to pretend that religion is unimportant.

Makes you think...

>Some years ago — never mind how long precisely — having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship.

You will never write anything anywhere near as good as this.

How has the DUDE ITS 2016 EVERYBODY JUST LOVE EACH OTHER MAN crowd managed to present themselves as the authority on the Bible? Literally the whole premise of the New Testament is that everybody is worthy of damnation and the only way to heaven is by joining the Good Group.

The Word of God, moron

When western civilisation finally collapses and the Islamic caliphate (or some version of it, depending on what kinds of reforms take place in Islam over the next century) finally takes over, will ideas like "civilisation", "democracy" and "rational scepticism" completely die out, or will they be survive but be recast as Islamic ideas?

Actually I'm a classic liberal (not full libertarian since that is a broken ideology) grounded in Bayle, Spinoza and Thomas Payne. Literally no theory of racial inheritence, and I don't need one since Islam is a state of mental surrender.

If you want to discuss it purely as a hypothetical, you can.

However if you can't even engage with the question, then you're not thinking clearly about the issue.

And of course, the absolute worst thing you can do in a discussion is to tar your opponent with a slur in an attempt to shut down the conversation.

>That's racist

Your shit OP didn't warrant any serious response.

Tell me how western civilization is collapsing and how an Islamic caliphate is seizing power.

Then we can discuss your retarded question

so my uni sent me a letter about a weekend program they're hosting where they claim to help you "advance your reading comprehension and double your wpm". do you think it would be worth going to or does it seem like some sham? i'm not a terrible reader but i thought maybe it could help me get even better.

what do you think? do any of you have experience with these types of things? did it help?

These tend to be exercises in efficient skimming, picking out the key ideas in a paragraph without consciously reading the whole thing. Of limited use in, say, reading newspapers, totally useless with literature where the style and atmosphere is more significant than the "key facts", and actively dangerous in studying textbooks because you can too easily miss important things.

And almost always a short sampler lesson to lure you into paying for a fuller course.

Seriously, has any other remake done more damage to the source material than that movie? It used like 5% of the book's content, at most, and nothing about it resembled Asimov. I mean, Jackson's Hobbit trilogy was closer to the source material than this movie.
