It's retarded even for vidya, movies, tv, and other shit. Even thinking in terms of heroes and villains in literature tends to be a one way ticket to plebtown.

you ever fallen in love with some property?

Would it be wise to write under an androgynous pen name? I'm considering taking my great grandfather's name and writing under 'Leslie'.

My legal first name just screams 15 year old white male. I'd prefer a name a little less revealing.

Do you ever think about how much better life would be if you were content with knowing nothing? I think pursuit of knowledge just leads to feeling empty; as you learn more, you become less and less satisfied with what you know and the more you realize you know nothing.

I look at the average person who does nothing but socialize and engage in mindless activities and I realize that he is happier than me. This I realize, despite the fact that I study several hours a day and endlessly pursue self-improvement, which is something that never occurs to him.

I don't mean to sound egotistical or depressed, but this is something that has plagued me ever since I started college several years ago. I feel restless and like I am completely wasting my life if I am not constantly engaged in an activity that I deem "worth my time". I get a constant nagging feeling if I watch television, play video games, or go out drinking with friends.

Are there any books that address these thoughts?

what are the real differences in writing a screenplay compared to a novel?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
books and film are two different types of art/media/whatever and they can't be expressed in the same way. a screenplay is one part of a larger piece of work (the film) whereas a book is literary art in its entirety
>>
>>8315678
Screenplays are basically like play scripts.
>>
>>8315678
Don't get memed by screenwriting. You're basically a hireling unless you are also directing the film.

It's a technical skill not real writing, no one reads screenplays for pleasure, they do not standalone

Will ASOIAF have the same longevity and timelessness as Lotr when it finally finishes? Will there be movies made in its honor which revive its popularity and inspire new generations of fans?

Definitely not, game of thrones doesn't really have that timeless appeal, it got famous because it was 'subversive to fantasy tropes' and got hip, but there's really not much that can make it endure as a classic.

Especially since george rr martin hasn't written a book in forever and has no clue how to end it lol
>>
It's another saga we won't hear the end of. It won't rise to the levels of LOTR, but it's at least like a Harry Potter (yes yes grumble grumble). I do think people will stop being such fucking twits about HOW GOOD IT IS within a few years of its ending.

>has no clue how to end it
Has he actually said this? Don't most authors at least have a rough outline of how things will end?

What are some interesting individuals you would recommend to read about that achieved the greateness of and had the level of accomplishment, intrigue and excitement in their lives as the likes of Lord Byron, Sir Richard Burton and Cesare Borgia?

Maybe not what your looking for but Gustavus Adolphus was a cool guy. If you're interested in warfare you should read about his groundbreaking tactics. He is considered as one of the greatest generals of all time and was studied by Napoleon and Clausewitz among others.

This is more /his/ related though I guess.

Hey /lit/, I need some help. I tried asking a similar question yesterday, although I've since decided to go with a slightly different route.

So, I've got to write a short story piece for my course, and one of the two prompts is "It is the victims of conflict that show us what is really important". We can't choose a prompt that's anything other than this and the other one.

Now, I've decided to make my piece about the struggles of the German citizens after WW1. I've tried asking /his/, but they aren't that helpful, so I thought I'd ask here.

I've come to realize that even though I studied about Germany during and after WW1, I can't remember shit. And I also can't think up of any good ideas.

I just need some ideas at the very least. I can't just state a bunch of historical facts, which is all I can think of doing. I wanted to write a piece that's sort of a self-reflection from a first-person view of a German citizen, and at the end it would be revealed that this citizen is Adolf Hitler, because why the fuck not. But this piece should have nothing to do with him or his actions until the very last paragraph. It needs to focus on the struggles of the average Germans.

The other prompt is "Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional." I can't think of anything for that, which is why I went for the other prompt.

Can somebody please help me with this? I need to write this thing within the next 3 hours and hand it in tomorrow morning which is in 9 hours.

/lit/, do you ever fantasize about your Wikipedia-page after you've made it as a writer?

I want to know if this is just my narcissism or if this is the /lit/ equivalent of picturing yourself playing a guitar solo in front of your high school class while listening to an exceptionally good song.

No. I do the playing a song in front of the school one, though. I neither sing or play an instrument

I sometimes talk (to myself) about my books, about different themes, tropes in them, how they correlate, about all the influences and all that jazz, while having written nothing.

It's fun though, and helps me think about my life and present situations.

This is glorified Joyce fanfic that only a Reddit would be excited over. Moore is a talent and genuinely interesting guy in his own right but this really nothing more than a passion project that people are hyping because we are culturally starved for good modern lit.

Let's have a world literature thread, so that means no american authors allowed. Let's try to make it more contemporary-leaning, say, the last 20-30 years. Discussion, recommendation and sharing welcome!

My current reads:

>Rafael Chirbes, On The Edge (in spanish)
Got it from a rec thread here, but I'm a bit disappointed. The writer is extremely repetitive, using 4 or 5 consecutive sentences to say the exact same thing using different analogies, all of which are rather bland. He seems to think that throwing out random lists of 'exotic' foods and animals makes his writing more colorful. Will continue reading to see if it gets better.

>Mathias Enard, Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d'éléphants (in spanish)
Recent winner of the Goncourt Prix. This book is a quick read, fun sometimes, but I'm halfway through and there is still no hint of conflict anywhere, no emotions, no struggles. The book follows Michelangelo as he travels to Istanbul to build a bridge at the request of the sultan. Instead of doing that, he spends his time drawing elephants, walking around the streets and watching hermaphrodites doing the belly dance. Fun, but I expected something more substantial. Waiting for his last book, Compass, to come out in spanish.

>Fernando del Paso, News from the Empire (in spanish)
Solid book. In the 1860's the Habsburg empire conquers Mexico and sets up Maximilian as emperor, whose reign will be very short lived. Great command of the language, great changes in style from chapter to chapter, and a wide scope, depicting both imperial daily life back in europe, struggles with the natives in Mexico, and the political shitfest going on between the two places.
