Thoughts? Pretty bland long-list if you ask me. Who is going to win? Who is missing off the list?
usually i've at least heard of several of the authors or books, surprised not to be familiar with any of these. are any 'worth the read,' /lit/?
>>8335401
Would some kind, generous anon mind to compile a folder with all of these to download? Much appreciated. Whichever ones are available, that is.
>>8335408
Recognized Coetzee immediately. Won the Nobel Prize as well as Man Booker twice.
You have 10 seconds to prove Nick Land isn't the greatest and most important philosopher alive.
>>8335379
you pure ideology
Indescribable. Infuriating, challenging, confounding, disgusting, and mind-blowing all at once. Given his neo-reactionary credentials, I want to dislike Land and his writing; more specifically I want to write him off as an intelligent but horribly misguided wingnut. But there is something so excessively brilliant, so unhesitatingly heretical on display here that it becomes impossible to turn away; impossible to forget. This collection and his book on Bataille outright demand multiple readings, if only just to revel in the kinetiscism of the language deployed, which ranges from insightful readings of Kant to 'mad black Deluzianism' to raving prose poetry, many times within a single piece.

This.
I would just add:
1 part Deleuze fucking Marx in the ass
2 parts autism
1/2 part meth
1 lime twist
What's the best version/translation of the bible? Preferably annotated.
>>8335375
For what?
There are two versions you could read, but for different reasons: KJV or NIV.
>NIV
This is the version you should skim read before you do anything, no matter what (Note: if you ignore this and jump straight into the KJV bareback, I strongly suggest Matthew Henry's commentary)
This NIV you the story in pretty easy to digest English. This is also probably the only version you need if you're a Christian looking for comfort and consolation in the text.
And in that case you should read it all. Every last word of that sweet sweet bible.
>KJV
Essential reading from a literary perspective. Doesn't matter if you're an atheist, a Jew, a Mudslime or you follow the Old Gods, you can't approach the English Canon without starting with the book of King James.
It is pretty essential reading for understanding Chaucer, Shakespeare and almost every canonical "tough old bearded man" writer - from Hemingway to Milton.
>The bible is long and cumbersome, how should I read it for literary value?
The Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronom), Psalms, the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and the Book of Revelations. In that order.
>>8335375
please don't listen to this idiot >>8335518
NIV is one of the worst translations. It's derisively referred to in many circles as the "Newly Invented Version." Just because it's ubiquitous doesn't mean it's good.
KJV is the most "literary"
ESV is the most literal/accurate
NLT is the most descriptive
I wouldn't suggest any version outside of those 3.
>>8335375
King James with Joseph smith translation as a companion.
Can any Germans help me, what is the best physical edition of Plato's complete works? I initially read them as ebooks but would like a collection for my shelf.
Aristotle as well if possible.
What is the platonic ideal physical edition of Plato's complete works?
I want this too
>>8335373
>Germans
>he is not fluent in latin
pleb
>buying books faster than I can read them
>qt working at the bookstore is into genre fiction

Whatever makes you happy right
The only reason I made this thread was because of the pic
I saved it because the cannonball would obviously just fall out and I found that funny (although the creator was surely aware of this)
>>8335445
thats autism
Got this today for cheap, pretty good and fun so far. It's like a dry, minimal blaxploitation novel. Other books by him worth reading?
>>8335319
>>8335319
Absolutely, all of his Coffin Ed and Gravedigger books are awesome.
If you haven't already, you might try some Mickey Spillane. Not black, but the over-the-top violence and pacing of his books remind me of Himes.
None of the hard-boiled writers could write about violence as well as Himes though.
One of my favorite authors in James Crumley (who I would also recommend if you haven't read his books). Whenever there is a violent scene in one of his novels it feels like he is trying to channel Himes.
>>8336132
Thanks for the recs mate, much appreciated. I'm enjoying All Shot Up a lot, so I'll try and get a hold of his other stuff.
Have you read Derek Raymond, by the way? Not exactly hard-boiled, but his portrayal of violence is incredible
>>8336482
I don't think I've ever heard of him before, but He Died with His Eyes Open does sound familiar. Seems interesting, I'm definitely going to check him out-- Thanks
Hey /lit/
I'm not particularly well-read, I did a lot in high school but haven't since I got to college. I read the intro to this in a B&N and loved it.
What do you think? Great work about mental illness or giant meme? Worth the buy?
It's alright - there's nothing particularly honest or great about it. Ultimately it goes nowhere, but it certainly makes for a fun read.
>>8335310
I read the first half and gave up on it. I find all the typographical goofery unstimulating, like a film with scratch and sniff cards, it does nothing but distract me.
literary face off. vote for your favorite. first author to get 5 votes wins. first anon to post 2 authors after a winner is declared, is what we vote on next.
I'll start this off with 2 American heavyweights
William Gaddis
VS
Don Delillo
let the fight begin.
Abstain.

Why is Stirner memed so hard on /lit/? What's the deal with his drawing?
>>8335286
He looks cool and his philosophy works as an excellent newfag filter.
>>8335286
why aren't there any real pictures of him
>>8335301
That is a real picture of him.If you mean why aren't there any photos it's because he died shortly before portable cameras became available.
Hedonism. Isn't it the only way? It's the oldest written philosophy, it boils down to taking advantage of all things good in the world. How can any other ideology compete?
>>8335278
Wouldn't the true cuck be the one that denies himself pleasure in life due to some arbitrary rule set that doesn't exist in nature?
>>8335289
It would be but he's from /pol/ so he doesn't actually understand anything he says.
>>8335278
>>8335307
Hedonism doesnt prevent you from setting yourself a goal, aslong as trying and eventually reaching it provides more pleasure than pain
How can Americans compete with any of these:
>Dante
>Shakespeare
>Cervantes
>Goethe
>Dante
>wrote an okayish poem about hell, the rest are boring af
>Shakespeare
>a few are okay (macbeth) but it's mostly pretentious intellectual masturbation
>Cervantes
>literally fucking who
>Goethe
>literally fucking who

>burgerman thinks he makes an interesting post but he just looks like an uneducated idiot
>the same goes for OP
What makes these authors so good anon? Give me the full side of your agruement.
which one is correct /lit/ ?
and they have the power to automatically negate any harmful supernatural effects affecting their bodies
and they have the power to automatically negates any harmful supernatural effects affecting their bodies
First one seems correct, as "they" is plural so it should be "negate". However the sentence still feels awkward to me. "automatically negate any harmful supernatural effects" is just really weird to read.
Negate, it's an infinitive. To negates isn't correct in any context
>>8335040
The first, you fucking mongolian
We haven't had one of these in a while; post an image of your choice and have other anons recommend you books based upon it.
I'll start:
Count Belisarius, Robert Graves
How do I write teenage girls?
I want a class of teenage girls to act convincingly in my story, the only problem is I've not had much experience with teenage girls.
I was sort of a creepy loner all through middle and high school, so the only interactions I had with girls were mostly negative. I've not so much as spoken to a teenager or a child in about 10 years either.
Any advice?
>>8334971
A woman's mentality doesn't change as she ages, only her interests. Instead of sleepovers and field hockey, they move on to wine and television series.
Don't do it OP. Seriously. If you can't, don't. You'll be wasting your time.
>>8334971
Teenage girls only speak in metaphors and cannot move independently, they must all move simultaneously and in gear-wise rotation relative to the rotation of the Primary Teen
Hard to say. I think the internet changes everything. More people will be archived, but less people will be truly REMEMBERED, since there will be such an over saturation of work that it will all sort of just blend together.
>>8334969
Joyce and Hemingway
>>8334969
Thousands of years from now only the likes of Shakespeare and Goethe will be remembered. But humanity won't last that long anyway.
