Pulp at best. It's artistic value is ruined by being episodic, success driven merchandise.

What your thoughts on Slow Learner?

I've started this book and so far I cannot say I'm enjoying it as I did with TCoL49. I've only read the first two stories; the first story was nothing special and forgettable, the second was interesting as funny, but not as good as his later work.

What I've seen of it ranged from bad to meh. It's classified as obsessed-completists-only for good reason

It's only intended for Pinecone fans interested in seeing how he developed as a writer, and he says as much in the intro

I liked it for the commentary and obviously pig Bodine ... My fav Pinecone character

>>
>>8335960
this desu, haven't bought a book in months
>>
>>8335900

50$ is nothing, anon. You better spend that at Betterworldbooks. First, go for the absolute classics, the long books, the philosophy books:

The Republic
Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
Plato's dialogues
Nietzsche

Only then go for fiction
Divina Comedia
Moby Dick
The Brothers Karamazov
The stories by Nabokov and Kafka

I read 95% of you list and they are all good, but most of that can wait.

good luck

What is /lit/'s judgement of Gore Vidal?

This board is for literature, not genre fiction

I don't know about the amorphous collective that is 4chan, but as an individual I can comfortably say that he's one of my personal favourites. I'd first start with his very good historical fiction, or if you don't want to go through all of them, stick with his classics of the genre: Lincoln, Burr and Julian. The rest aren't as worthwhile, in my opinion, but still highly interesting. Next, go on to his brilliant novella Myra Breckinridge, and don't be scared by talk of Hollywood's abysmal adaptation. After you're done with that, I'd recommend moving onto his greatest work, namely his huge collection of essay called "United States," which is basically his very personal look at America, and its place in the world over thirty four years (1958-1992).

I don't know if this helps, but I think its important to point out that he was indeed an important writer, who will definitely stand the test of time, and that it's ridiculous that so many people on this board turn their nose up at him because they've only heard of his historical fiction.

Friend of mine is 20 and wanted me to start reading Percy Jackson. He's rereading Harry Potter now. I told him that at his age he should try reading something a 13 year old girl wouldnt also read. He said that I read some Aristotle at that age and I told him that wasn't the point. I highlighted the difference between someone say reading The World as Will and Representation and him reading Harry Potter or Maze Runner. He said he didn't care for dry philosophy or that adult fiction was too adult cause it would mention boring things like taxes.
He then stated that Harry Potter redefined a genre and that it's popularity points to it's excellence. I told him about the law of large numbers and that popularity can also mean mediocrity. He's always been a bit of a follow-the-crowd kind of guy so he wouldn't concede there.

I know I should allow him to read what he wants, but the dude hasn't read anything that isn't YA in like two years.
Anyone go through something similar?

There's literally never been a single documented case of a successful pleb to patrician conversion. You can turn yourself from a pleb to patrician through hard work over a long period of time, but doing it to another person will never work and will only create hostlity.

I'm on chapter 14 of this book.

It seems heavy-handed but there's a lot of very good characters in here, or at least characters who represent different types of people in the real world very accurately.

What do you think of it?

It's trash.

When you get to the meandering monologues that last three pages, you'll be wondering why in the hell you thought the characters represented anything accurately.

Turn back now, OP. Don't waste your time on this piece of shit book.

Don't you find that, after a few years. could be one year, could be ten, the books you've read pretty much vanish from yourself? You only get a slight sensation of what it did for you at the time. If even that. I'm 34 and it's such a pity to realize that, not only I will never read all the books I'd like to because of limited time on this earth, but also because of the fact that those I've read don't become part of me or stay with me, but they vanish away, more or less slowly, until there's nothing left of them.
Some book's I've read and really liked, I remember nothing.

Hmm not really. I seem to lose very little. I mean some of the stuff I read more than 10 years ago keeps coming back to my in sentences and scenarios.
>>
>>8335519
Yes, and it fucking sucks. It sometimes makes going back to material you've read before more enjoyable, but it's also very frustrating to not be able to recall all the details of books you've really enjoyed. I wouldn't say they vanish entirely for me, but in a few years I'm left with only an impression of a book, i.e. it's main points and how I generally felt about it. Feels bad, man.
>>
>>8335519
you forget the details of the book, but the way it changes you is not lost. if you read a book that makes you more aware of the finiteness of your time on the universe, and consequently, makes you a more productive person, just because you don't remember the plot of the book doesn't mean that the book has completely 'vanished,' whatever that means.

that's how i feel, anyways. its like schooling. you may not remember everything you learned but the time you spent learning can still be valuable because of the development of certain underlying principles which make you who you are today.

I read it all. Overall it has very good prose, beautiful even in some parts, but in everything else it's ultimately absurd. My wife is Christian though so it helps in that regard, even though she hasn't read it all the way through.
>>
>>8335503
Over the course of my life I'm guessing that I've read 95%+ of the Bible. I've never read it straight through so I know that I have to have missed a few chapters/verses. Probably from the minor prophets/poetry and wisdom.

almost positive I've read the whole New Testament though.

Genesis, Exodus, 1+2 Samuel, Job, Ezekiel, Daniel, Acts, Paul's letters, and Revelation are the highlights imo.

A computer wrote this poem in a Kurt Vonnegut short-story:

“Love is a hawk with velvet claws
love is a rock with heart and veins
love is a lion with satin jaws
love is a storm with silken reins”

This man could have been a poet. This one is beautiful.

What is the literary lifestyle?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8335474
A lifestyle that is simply infeasible unless you're content with being discontent, extremely acclaimed in academic circles, or if you're extremely wealthy
>>
>>8335474
Write for a living with small side jobs to supplement your income, typically in places where literary types spend time like coffee shops, bookstores, libraries, universities, or something that is mindless such as ditch digging, trades, etc, so that your mind is still untaxed afterwards. But primarily from writing.

Small house or apartment with most of the walls taken up by bookshelves, but only filled with books you've read or written.

Spend all your free time writing or reading. Live modestly.

Hello! I'm writing an essay about the events that most influenced the fall of the USSR. I'm having trouble finding an event people thought had a great deal with the fall but in reality had little influence. A counter to my thesis really.

Chernobyl.
And the best description of the fall of the USSR in literature would be Pelevin's Omon Ra.

I try to remember -- don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
