I would just dispute that we are at all reluctant to describe it as a failure. Perhaps the failings of Socialism gain more traction because those ideas have endured in some form to the modern day, but other than that I don't see any significant failure of fascism which now endures.

Fascism economies were planned too, but to a lesser extent than communist or socialist economies. The government took control of the biggest corporations, but some degree of free enterprise and competition were allowed and encouraged. They were against the ideological aspects of Marxism, but also against many core ideas of liberalism (19th and 20th century English liberalism, not US Democratic party liberalism). They did not dislike competition and private property the way the Marxists do, but they were against what they thought senseless accumulation of capital and profit.

Fascist economies existed solely during wartime, and for war, whereas the Soviet Union lasted around 80 years, and its focus was achieving the Marxist ideals of abolishing private property, profits, and wage labour, etc. Germany focused its production for war, and it halted projects that Hitler endorsed personally (the building of Berlin as capital of the world by Speer) to focus on armament. The fascists lost, their ideas were dismantled; West Germany was capitalistic and East Germany fell under the influence of the Soviets.

My personal take, and what I've read from people with more knowledge than me (I can't remember where, though) is that fascist economies could have survived post-war, but they would have done poorly compared with freer economies. Some say they would have collapsed after a few decades. Marxism failed because of economic reasons, fascism failed because of bad military decisions. In the end, though, fascist economies were more planned than liberal ones but less than communist ones.
