I always seem to fall into the trap of wanting to over-describe shit when I start writing.
My last two pages described my main character being stuck in mud without knowing he was in mud.
What the fuck is wrong with me.
>My last two pages described my main character being stuck in mud without knowing he was in mud.
Four more pages and baby, you've got a short story goin': http://www.pierre-legrand.com/borges-averroess-search.pdf

I don't want to do this, though. I want to quickly describe him being stuck in mud, coming to the realization it's mud, and move on in a paragraph or two.
>Struggling with some sort of goop, Adam pulled with what little strength he could muster. Clearing his eyes, he came to the realization he had been face down in wet mud.

What are the shortest books out there that also happen to be the deepest and most jam packed? I'm trying to gain knowledge but not waste too much time. ya feel?

I have no mouth and I must scream.

So you're looking for non-fiction?
>>8341456
Read it already. Well, technically, audiobooked it
Can women actually write anything good or is it just a meme?
This was nice.
Nope, women are literally incapable of writing great pieces of literature. But you, you are undiscovered genius, a massive source of untapped potential, unlike the dilettante bitches. When everyone finally recognizes you as the creative mind that you surely are, well then maybe Stacy will regret turning you down for the 8th grade semi. Cunt.
>>8341408
Wuthering Heights, and To the Lighthouse, are both great pieces of literature. So you have at least two women that can write well right there.

>What is Dreamscape?
A collaborative work of fiction. Jay Phaedon is rescued from his abusive father by Nick Land and recruited into a commune of New Sincerists, operating somewhere in postmodern Scandinavia.
>What is "the Dreamscape"?
Only you can answer that.
>How do I contribute?
Write a piece and add it as a suggestion in the document. You can do this by right-clicking and selecting "Comment" or "Suggest Edit". An editor will check it is not vandalism and accept the changes.
>My contributions are gone!
It may have been deleted, moved, edited, or merged with other pieces of writings. If you're particular to your work then keep an offline copy.

Wow, /lit/ is writing another piece of shit.

Can someone with a botnet account restore the subtitle? I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was pretty great.
Where do I start with him /lit/?

Just please don't read Nietzsche if you didn't read something before him
I humbly seek /lit/'s wisdom on a problem that's been plaguing me for some time now. I have the beginning of a story and the end. I have the characters fleshed out and I have the key scenes written, but I'm having a lot of trouble connecting the dots.
I spent a night just writing nonstop a few weeks ago where I managed just under ten-thousand words.
It didn't fit. The flow from event to event was too disjointed or didn't seem to follow the over arching theme of the story. I've had this beautiful idea playing out in bits and pieces in my head, but can't for the life of me find a way to make them fit harmoniously.
In the simplest case, the two MCs come from opposite sides of the spectrum and I can't find a way for them to realistically cross paths. How do you guys segue your stories together when you find yourself in a bind? Should I just write something toxic and move on or should I bring it to an editor and let them figure it out?
>>8341285
Keep writing, finish a draft, let it sit for a few weeks, come back, rewrite, repeat until you're satisfied.
>>8341285
It sounds dumb, but segue the segues. Write chapter 2.5 for more detail, see if that helps. I'm working on a detective novel at the moment and if two chapters don't flow, I write a new chapter between them. Keep dividing and hopefully it'll start to flow.
Follow the theme you are writing and rewrite peices that don't work. Keep trying new things, and maybe you'll spring onto an idea to push the book forward.
You can also try to write something else entirely for a while, to get your mind out of the funk
Does anything compare to this? I haven't found anything else that I like as much as this, not even Tolstoy's other work.
What I love about this is its stylistic combination of the most epic of epics and the most intimate of intimate events.
It's like Tolstoy goes from observing life with the hubble telescope to observing it with a a neutron microscope, sometimes within the same paragraph. Sometimes within the same sentence.
nope. that's it. this is the best book of all time. you nailed it, anon.
>>8341154
>observing with a neutron microscope
FUCK. KYS.
was dfw generally correct in his prediction abt the emergence of the next cultural movement being a fracturing of the over-produced entertainment industry that feasted on irony and satire?
it seems like the trump phenomena owes a debt to a media-world devoid of unacceptable but frank messaging.
was dfw also prophetic when he mentioned that some of the most clever ppl he knew in school went into marketing departments, and by that I mean, is there a person, or persons, behind the trump campaign that recognized this culture shift towards 'sensationalist irony-drenched PC satire' culture, and subsequently "krav-maga'd" the PC machine for viewers and rating, i.e., a car crash that the cameras cannot turn away from? who are other artists/writers in this vein?
>>8341103
>dude, Trump is entertaining!
killer insight, bro.that was just my jaded and condescending 4chan persona. actually i think Trump is chillingly similar to Johnny Gentle and a Trump presidency would probably be similar to his
shitlibs are so desperate to justify their faith in their failing credos that they'll come up with dozens of explanations for Trump's success while ignoring the obvious answer that his proposed policies resonate with Americans
people curiously don't want mass immigration to change the demographic composition of their country, their jobs to continue bleeding into China, or neocon interventionism in the Middle East and purposeless saber-rattling towards Russia as well as wars that are costly both financially and in human lives
his bombastic personality helps deliver a message that was always going to be popular
ever fucked? what's the deal?
Keep it lit related folks. Pic related, it's a book that has a bit of sex in it.
>>8341092
What the fuck are you even saying.

I think it's very clear. if you're having trouble just reread the post until your reading comprehension skills finally kick in

How?
>Anon, stop asking me about the late David Foster Wallace. I do not like his work. Let's leave it at that.
>Anon, for the hundredth time, I am not going to change my mind about Stephen King or Harry Potter.
>Anon, you have very shallow insights on Thomas Pynchon's novels. I don't think you even read them at all.
>Anon, I do not care about your internet message board sites. I don't even use a computer. Stop trying to get me to visit them.
>Anon, my dear, why were you even allowed in my class in the first place?
i read Inherent Vice and it was kinda enjoyable but overall underwhelming/falling short of my expectations. that was my first pynchon novel. i wanna give him another try, what should i read?

he should have waited before tackling big themes art such a scale. im tempted to call it as bloated as got, but that'd be unfair.
I'll meditate for 10-20 mins some days, and all I know is focusing on breaths. On the rare occasion I get high, I can concentrate sensations in my body, and I can achieve this while meditating, too. I want to know what this is called, what meditating does exactly, and the best methods.
Or should i just reread the bible and jerk off?
Meditating means just not thinking.
Everything you use is a tool to get to that goal of having your mind shut up for a brief time.
>>8341050
I have my own method of meditating, but don't want to talk about it until I experiment it further.
>the best methods
Just focus on your breath while you sit still, if you notice your mind starts wandering around with monologues, fantasies, images, stop it and focus on your breath again, you might need to force yourself to stay still, but don't give up and you get used to it.
>what meditating does exactly
You become better as whole, which means faster, more focused, clear minded, creative, emotionally stable (not stoic, but in control), positive, physically healthy, wiser, empathetic, etc...
>>8341059
Depends on what you consider "thinking". If you are talking about your internal monologue, yes, when you are focusing on your breath for example you are stopping your internal monologue by shifting attention. However the attention shift comes from the importance you are giving to perceiving your breath, in another words, you (in a sense) THINK perceiving your breath is really important, even though there is no internal monologue anymore.
Why has this novel's reputation lasted so long? Niven is good, but this was a horribly bad read.
what are your favorites from niven?
>>8341033
Mote in God's Eye its the best I've read from him. Ringworld in comparison is campy.
>>8341027
I thought Hogfather was interesting, it made some good points
Is reading books overrated, especially when it comes to non-fiction? Let me explain.
I feel like there is this untouchable aura around reading, around the action of picking a book and reading it from beginning to end. People say simplified generalizations and bullshit statements like "A book is the best gift you can give to someone" or "You always learn something from a book". That's not true at all, they are shitty books that don't teach you anything, and spend an awful amount of words dong so.
I feel like there are now ways of sharing knowledge and information that are much more efficient than books. Now, of course, that isn't true for fiction works, but there are definitely some philosophy works out there that can be summed up much more efficiently than actually reading them.
When you read books, don't you sometime feel like you're done and got the essential of it without even being finished?
>>8341021
what the fuck is going on in that picture
Reading is oxygen this ignites the waiting fire in your brain--well, if you had one.
