Help me find this book, /lit/.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Is horror a dead genre since movies can do it so much easier and the general populace is much more desensitized?
How do we save it?

Identify what is horrific about modern life.

For Lovecraft, in the era of unexplored oceans and territories and religious superstition, he poised a noumenal realm of malevolent gods whose earthy representatives still lurk terrifying but usually hidden from sight.

For that Japanese guy who wrote The Ring, it was early tech (videotapes etc) and the notion of technology having the potential to be cursed as well as beneficial to one's indolent lifestyle.

For Ligotti, it is advanced capitalism and the modern corporate workplace, wherein mysterious managers lurk behind frosted glass ready to cull another batch of employees and co-workers who use any means possible of attaining a more superior rank.

Now, for you, dear Anon, it is surely the Internet and its capacity to know everything about you, to reduce your existence to a form which you do not feel resembles you, or even imitate you in a way that is beyond your control, it is also multiculturalism and the waves of subhuman shitskin scum destroying urban environments from Sweden to Austin, Texas (Lovecraft touched on this theme in a roundabout manner), it is an advanced culture which fears no war or invading force who, despite the lack of immediate threats, has pursued ideologies promoting degeneracy and the aggressive pursuit of Fun (TM) rather than more noble ideals, it is the implosion of the traditional family and the reduction of each citizen (read: consumer) to an isolated, demoralized hoarder of solitary pleasures, it is me unsheating my katanaandCHOPPINGYOURFRIGGINHEADOFF*blood spurts from your neck stump*hehe kiddo nothing personnel *wiped blade* *sheathes katana* maybe you'll learn not to Mess With The Best next time hehehe

Kant, Hegel, Schelling, Fichte.

Knowing the "real" world is impossible as knowledge depends on the knower. The knower can therefore only know what it is capable of knowing, and the "real" world conforms to these capacities for the knower.

Moreover, what we know depends on the historical development of concepts, so that what we know at any given time depends on that time's comprehension of itself in thought.

Trump doesn't have anything to do with this and the clip is mostly funny because of the juxtaposition of high and low.

Recently read this and truly loved it. Are there other similar things? Novels that deal with the pain of disappointment in such a simple, humble way.

The Waves by Woolf fits thematically, though "simple" and "humble" are not words I would use to describe that book, great as it is.

Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb might work too, it's another great mid-century melancholic Hungarian novel.

>>10016913
Already read The Waves and I agree with you, Woolf is too sublime to fit in what I'm looking. Great book nonetheless.

I'll check Journey by Moonlight, sounds interesting.

A history of greek mathematics, volume 1, is what I'm reading at the moment. Now there are these quotes and greek words here and there, can you tell me what they mean?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>10016867
it says "mathmata" and "mathematiks", and its an unusual contraction for both (more usual: mathemata; mathematikos).

it look like the person spelling out the greek doesn't speak much greek, or else speaks a different dialect to attic/koine. they're pretty well defined and mused over in attic.
>>
>>10018378
sorry saged by force of habit, have a bump in case anyone recognizes the dialect

Westward Spreads the Fire.png

Westward Spreads the Fire was written as a sort of free-market answer to The Grapes of Wrath. It was about Judd Puckett, a young man who was forced to become the head of a family traveling the Oregon Trail after the death of his father. The subtext was about the dust bowl migrations, and how the migrant farmers should look to their past and rediscover the American spirit of rugged individualism etc etc...

Anyone else read this one?

So can you tell me a little about yourself?

Well, I'm 26, five foot 9, 160 pounds... I like classical music... But I think the most important thing about me, the most relevant, is that I don't exist.

You don't exist?

No, I don't.

Could you elaborate?

Well I have a birth certificate, a drivers license, a bank account... I'm enrolled to vote... but I don't actually exist. I'm not a person, not an entity. I'm not real.

If you're not a person, why would you need a drivers license?

Well I'm in a key demographic. It looks good for me, and others like me, to appear to be living a normal, happy, successful life. It evens things up a little I guess.

There are others like you?

Oh yes. Lots.

And why does it look good? That you live a normal life, as you say.

Well crime, poverty, stocks... there are all sorts of problems people have these days, you know? It would be good if these things weren't such a big deal. It makes a lot of sense to just create people who don't have these problems, people who have it made. If you have four people and one is obese that's 25%. But if you create five additional people who are happy and healthy, the figure drops to 10%. It's a much more reasonable amount, don't you think?

That is an improvement?

Definitely. I definitely think this trend will continue. I think in the future there will be a large proportion of the population who don't exist. I think in ten years time you'll meet people, or there will be people who you've known, or people you've worked with, who never existed at all. That will be an improvement in my mind.

You think that would be better?

Yes. Yes, I think I do.

Trying to get into reading again but I'm finding it difficult. I used to be able to finish multiple novels in a night but now I'm 40 pages into a book after a week. How do I get back into reading?

inb4
>turn off pc/phone/etc
I already do this.
>audiobooks
Awful meme, make me fall asleep.
>spend more time reading lol
Been trying, if I dedicate any more time to reading I'll start to fall behind in my studies.

I don't understand. Why can't I process information as fast as I used to be able to? How do I fix this? I spend way longer on a single page than other people. I don't know what's changed.

I got my hands on a huge collection of Forgotten Realms books. Which one should I read first? I'm thinking Baldur's Gate because I liked the games.

The Baldurs Gate book isn't very good . I'd suggest finding a release order guide, start from there (I wouldn't read book to book that way, but trilogy to trilogy, considrring that's how they used to do it). For what it's worth, if you like the Baldurs Gate games, the first Drizzt trilogy and the first Eliminster trilogy are must reads.

When you break your leg, you have to learn to walk again. And it's hard work, maybe even painful; it's not a walk in the park by any stretch, but you can be certain that if you put it off, it's not going to get any better.

Why didn't you guys tell me the classics were so hilarious?
