I have read several Warcraft books, Star Wars books, and the Lord of the Rings. In addition, I have read a few Horus Heresy novels.
Along the way of reading these books, I feel that I am not encountering anything that really takes my breath away thematically, conceptually, etc. It's more that these are things that I "would" read. I "would" be interested in them. But I feel they are pretty constrained.
Is there any particularly innovative fantasy out there? Something that's actually excellent and that isn't full of complaints?
I feel there has to be a way to go deeper than what I'm used to with these sort of "mainstream fantasy" series.
I don't necessarily want to be "challenged" with fantasy, I'd just like to see something new and refreshing and which, most importantly, I am not expecting.
Try David Gemmell, Game of Thrones by Martin, and the forotten realsm Drizzt series by Salvatore.

>making yourself read not just genre fiction, but tie-in genre fiction
Holy shit. If you're determined to stay in fantasy/sci-fi, at least read some of the standard books (Asimov, Clarke, Tolkien, Frank Herbert etc). It's not great literature, but it's not freaking Star Wars novelisations.
Or if you want to literature it up a bit, try short stories by Borges and Ballard, novels by Ursula Le Guin, 1984 and Brave New World, maybe the Gormenghast books, Gene Wolfe.
Or you could try fantastical fiction that's less bound by genres- 100 Years of Solitude, The Third Policeman, Midnight's Children, The Tin Drum...
>>8366591
...oh, I see you mentioned Tolkien. I guess I wasn't expecting to see him between Warcraft books and Warhammer books...
How many hours a day do you write? How many hours a day should you write?

Edgy hskid
I spend about 16 hours writing shitty posts on 4chan every day.
Does anyone know the name of a book that's a scifi where everyone is forced to take drugs and they all have casual sex all the time. I remember it being a option in my 8th grade class and fahrenheit 451 or the hunger games. I think that the author was high while writing it.

thank you sir

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley?
If I want to read about the philosophy of justice, I start with Plato.
If I want to read about the philosophy of how to lead a life, I start with Aristotle.
Who do I read for the philosophy of choice?
Ayn Rand or Kierkagaard
Higgledy piggledy
Where does literature fit here?
under engineering
>>8365984
the "art" part that encompasses those themes.
>>8365984
It looks stupid. So you can probably put it anywhere
Anything by coupland worth reading?
I'm from Vancouver so idk if I should check him out
Read Generation X a few years back. It's not "groundbreaking" like the LA Times claims it to be. It's not the worst thing to come out in the last 30 decades though. I'd say it's a very much in the middle of the road in terms of story and writing.
>>8366002
Lol 3 decades not 30
>>8366002
Damn 30 decades cool
James Joyce was featured on School of Life, what does /lit/ think of this video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SuHkY2wAQA
>>8365962
Nice, I was waiting for him to do James Joyce. Even though I dislike School of Life.
>>8366108
Gotta say this is pretty good.
>>8366133
they did a 13-minute video
compared to their 3-minute videos on philosophers it is definitely better
Hi I'm a college student who is about 10k in debt looking for ways to pay off loans and help pay for future semesters.
My question is is their money in selling erotic fiction on Amazon or Nook? I am willing to build a social media presence under a pseudonym to promote my works.
I only write short stories but they are very passionate and cater to a female audience. No rapes, incest, bestiality, cuckolding, gangbangs etc. Just real passionate erotic romance. Could I make money doing this or am I wasting my time?
>>8365964
But i already have 22 stories
>>8365956
Is there money in writing?
>ameture
>is their money
Probably not for you.
>>8366030
Why? What prevents me from succeeding when I'm willing to work for it?
My entire book collection was destroyed in floods.
With what books do I start rebuilding it?
You don't, you sisterfucker. Go get a waterproof Kobo and leave Japan.
>>8365927
The Swedes

I read Rum Diary and I loved it, so I decided to read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It is very over the top and I don't like it at all. Are there novels by him that are similar to Rum Diary or should I give up on Hunter S Thomson?
>>8365320
His later work might be more suited to your tastes
>>8365336
Thanks, will check some later work. I was just very disappointed because Rum Diary was exactly what I like and everybody seems to love Fear and Loathing and I really don't get the hype
you're a pleb
F&LiLV is a masterpiece Rum Diary is so shite it never got published till he was old as fuck and even then only because he'd become a household name not cause the book was good
Hey, /lit/.
I think I'm sick of reading books about complete degenerates.
I just finished Norwegian Wood by Haruki Muramaki and I fucking hated it. I'm wondering if anyone else has read this book and enjoyed it or found that they also disliked it. I know the book was rather popular in Japan and I've been trying to read authors other than natural English speakers. Maybe it's just a problem of this being a cheap romance novel.
I've also put down True North just recently because of how bad it is, too. Is this just the problem of first person perspective and the degeneracy of the narrator? I just find the main character and the people around them to be so unbelievable that it destroys any semblance of caring about what's going on with the individuals.
>>8365234
Are you a proud conservative redpiller too?
You should read works that emphasize conservative values and masculinity. I recommend Hitler's 'Mein Kampf'.
>>8365234
>finished Norwegian Wood
I fear this is not really the board for you, son.
>>8365234
I had gotten through the first 100 pages of True North and realized I couldn't go on. The first section of the novel was filled with crap and it culminated in the father raping a 12 year old girl (which he had done consistently otherwise outside of the direct narration).
I also quit On the Road. Some problem with the characters all being shithead drug addicts or just sex fiends without and real reflection on the human relationships they have.
His characters don't even have voices. They all have got the same diction and poetic way of speaking about certain things they're passionate about, which would be fine if not for the fact they all sound alike. It's clear this guy only knows how to write with his own diction. If the voices of the author, narrator and characters are all indiscernable, that's a sign of bad writing to me.
>>8365050
>It's clear this guy only knows how to write with his own diction.
that's right
>that's a sign of bad writing to me
that's wrong
>>8365050
>They all have got the same diction and poetic way of speaking about certain things they're passionate about
Except that's false.
Find a new hobby.
>>8365050
You probably need to read him more slowly. His characters do all say ponderous and dreamy things but the content and delivery are dramatically different from character to character. Compare jack gladney to bill gray. Or Oswald to nick shay. The difference may seem superficially narrow, but he's also a member of the iceberg team.
Is there any point in learning Latin or Ancient Greek?
Not for you, retard
>>8364929
For fun. I took 2 years of Latin in high school.
Not really but I took Latin in every year of high school and used it to hold a larger grasp on linguistics
latin randomly comes in handy with derivatives
Is 4chan literature?
1. True
2. Depends on which, both likely disappointed to an extent
3. Don't have a crush
4. Hmm
Probably

Very disappointed.

They were never OK and they will never be.
4chan is mindless escapist entertainment, nothing more.
