Who else /strong atheism/ here?

>until they do I shall base my decisions on the assumptions that the earth is flat
"Once the sin against God was the greatest sin; but God died, and these sinners died with him. To sin against the earth is now the most dreadful thing, and to esteem the entrails of the unknowable higher than the meaning of the earth."
Why haven't you read this yet?

Where is the line between being simplistic/moderate style-wise and plain, boring, uninventive?
Also, what are some other novels/novellas with a simple style like pic related?
The same line you cross when you start plowing that student pussy.
>>8367472
I think you're mistaking simplicity for clarity. John willams has some of the most clear, refined prose I've ever read.
>>8367472
I think Kokoro is similar to this. I liked both.
"For he must die who is their stay"
What does he mean by that?
"their stay" as in "their lot". Wordsworth can be a terrible poet sometimes.
That said, Tintern Abbey is one of the greatest poems in the English language.

Finally, an answer! I thought /lit/ was full of pretentious pricks who don't actually read, but this gave me a bit of hope.
>>8367658
Don't worry we have plenty of those too
What do you think is the best approach for dialogue in a historical setting like medieval or ancient times? Is it best to avoid words/expressions that "feel modern"? What about deliberate "archaic" style? I think it can devolve into unintentional silliness very easily, so it's a dangerous path...
perhaps read a lot of lit closer to that time period, research the etymology of certain words and the source/start of expressions. and i guess depending on the time period, learn about the differences in higher and lower classes' speech
>>8367390
Shakespeare didn't bother with any of that crap.
learn old english and ancient greek. make sure you learn all the dialects too, because otherwise scholars will be all, why is this nigga talking in a doric accent when he's athenian? is he supposed to be metic or some shit?
Just wanting to share some Italian lit. If you want recs or tips with the language, ask away.

I just finished rereading this. Is this the absolute epitome of fantasy? Is there even a point to reading genre fiction after this? Surely, nothing else can compare.
>the absolute epitome of fantasy
You're not asking what you think you are. Consult a dictionary and ask again.

>a typical or ideal example
lol?
>>8367332
Honestly, I'd consider it more mythology than genre...Tolkien certainly intended for that.
From there, you can either try deconstructionist fantasy, or straight fantasy that's regarded very well. I'd recommend trying a few different things out and seeing what interests you:
A Game of Thrones (dark yet humanist fantasy with very strong character work)
Mistborn (deconstructionist fantasy)
The Book of the New Sun (genre approaching literary)
Did anyone else cry during this book?
The ending got me.
this girl in my tenth grade english class. she said she did anyway.
I didn't cry but the ending was amazing. I loved how cryptic and mysterious it felt.
yo that fucking kid got eaten lmao.
It really grinds my gears when people dismiss arguments as "STEM". This is nothing but ressentiment resulting from recent sociological, dare I say memetic trends on the Internet.
Stop going "hurr STEM" please and present arguments. Thanks.

it's crap
Last two verses are good, the rest is a bit boring.
>Hadji Murad also lives and dies as the archaic epic hero, combining in himself all of the virtues and none of the flaws of Odysseus, Achilles, and Aeneas.
Why does Bloom gargle Hadji Murad's cock and balls so much?
Murad ain't got shit on Achilles.
Achilles is a poet, Murad is artless.
Achilles is concerned with life, death, fate, honor, immortality, the fundamental beauty and sorrow of human existence. Murad just whines about his family.
Achilles transcends the standards of his cultural environment, Murad is forever captive to them.
If Priam showed up in Murad's tent, Murad would just stab him right away.
Achilles is fiercely loyal to Patroklos, Murad is only loyal to himself.
If Murad tried to fight a river he would just drown like a retard.
Well tbqh Achilles almost died like a retard fighting that river himself
>>8367025
Achilles is the ur-Mary Sue, Murad isn't.
>>8367041
But if Bloom is correct, and Murad combines "in himself all of the virtues and none of the flaws of Odysseus, Achilles, and Aeneas." then surely he is a way bigger Mary Sue than Achilles.

Who /welshancestry/ here?
Also, what Russian lit is must-read aside from Dostoevsky and Tolstoy?
>>8366875
It's a great read, but unless you're familiar with the Russian affairs of the time, or are having someone guide you through it who does then a lot of the satirical commentary will go over your head. Though it's a great read regardless. Bulgakov creates a lot of really memorable scenes and characters that you can enjoy at face value.
I would also recommend that you look in Chekhov and Nabokov (if you count him as Russian).
