Which depiction of Satan do you prefer, Dante's or Milton's?

Obviously Dante's is much less heretical than Milton's, but from a literary perspective which works better?

John Adam's biography.

Just be prepared to bring context to the situations/quotes about the black folk of yesteryear. Also, go to museums with him; for kids it's all about context to their lives, so while suffering is usually not something they understand, friendships are – focus on how they viewed and got along with white people and in what contexts those relationships arose.

I'm not sure about narratives other than Twain, but even then it took me 10 or so year to fully appreciate those narratives.

my diary desu

Here we go again

I'm thinking about switching out of my American lit class (1800s-21st century) and into a class on Shakespeare this fall. I was also thinking about taking UT's class on James Joyce, but I'm not sure that I'm prepared for it.

I've heard that Hamlet is important (hence the class on Shakespeare), but I haven't read the Iliad or Odyssey (although I did read some of the Odyssey freshman year of HS). I don't know. I really, really want to read it, enjoy it, understand it, and conquer it. I'm an English major too so I feel like it's important for me to read it.

Just to be clear, I do want to enjoy it. The ability to say that I read it is just a small part of my motivation for reading it.

I was also perusing the archive and saw a post with an excerpt from early on in the book (the one about the shaving cream, bowl, and mirror). I didn't really understand it and felt pretty dumb when someone else posted about how the speaker was mocking Christianity by reducing the Virgin Mary to a common woman (Christine, I think).

I'm definitely planning on reading Dubliners and Portrait first so I may have to wait until the spring semester after next to take the James Joyce class (which is only offered during the spring).

Forgot to mention that I read House of Leaves for a class this past semester (class on cult classics of all things) and loved it. It was a ton of fun and really enjoyable to think about all of the complexities/relationships between the reader, the book, and the characters.

Although I guess the only similarity between House of Leaves and Ulysses is length, which is debatable considering the formatting of HoL.

I've tried to read Ulysses. I've tried to read The Brothers Karamazov. I've tried to read Infinite Jest. I never get further than a few dozen pages.

I read short stories, and I read textbooks. How do I read literature?

Also, OP, maybe you are just not made for this.
Maybe just stick to YA. English is not even my native language and even I can read easily BK or Infinite Meme.

Just bought a Kindle today, where do you guys get your ebooks at? Can't find sites for pirating mobi or ePub books sadly. Looking for stuff like Game of Thrones, Modern Romance from Aziz, the new Harry Potter book, etc.

Also any recommendations on books and tips to do with the Kindle would be greatly appreciated thanks!

>It was after the disappearance of the photographer Spence that my intuitions concerning the Teatro began to crystallize and become explicit thoughts, a dubious process but one to which I am inescapably subject as a prose writer. Until that point in time, everyone tacitly assumed that there was an intimacy of kind between the Teatro and the artists who were either approached by the Teatro or themselves approached this cruel troupe by means of some overture, as in the case of Spence, or perhaps by gestures more subtle, even purely noetic (I retreat from writing unconscious, although others might argue with my intellectual reserve). Many of us even spoke of the Teatro as a manifestation of super-art, a term which we always left conveniently nebulous. However, following the disappearance of the photographer, all knowledge I had acquired about the Teatro, fragmentary as it was, became configured in a completely new pattern. I mean to say that I no longer considered it possible that the Teatro was in any way related to a super-art, or to an art of any kind — quite the opposite in fact. To my mind the Teatro was, and is, a phenomenon intensely destructive of everything that I conceived of as art. Therefore, the Teatro was, and is, intensely destructive of all artists and even of highly artistic persons. Whether this destructive force is a matter of intention or is an epiphenomenon of some unrelated, perhaps greater design, or even if there exists anything like an intention or design on the part of the Teatro, I have no idea (at least none I can elaborate in comprehensible terms). Nonetheless, I feel certain that for an artist to encounter the Teatro there can be only one consequence: the end of that artist’s work. Strange, then, that knowing this fact I still acted as I did.

Will the circle be unbroken?
These ripped heartstrings are my token.
A past that dwells like a whisper in the night.
A future that quells the quiet war i fight.
Quiet mind burning to show thoughts empathy.
Loud soul mis-spelling quiet minds sympathy.
What mind, body, and soul feel
Is what ignorance would try to swiftly steal.
For my heart didn't quake with infatuated desires,
It swelld with what love admires.
Mostly of what eyes portrayed, eyes in which my heart grew delayed.
Smile gave way to fears dispelled,
One of which whos match was unparalleled.
Little did my mind grow aware,
Of the thoughts the eyes hid there.
Ignorance strikes a fatal blow.
One of which eyes will never know.
Now the chest in which said heart be bound,
resides the ruins of a foundation which was once sound.
Years of war had finally toppled this castle into dust,
But king still sit on throne unmoved, unmatched, and unthrust.
Still the king longed for the eyes to see,
That the quiet heart will always have eyes for she.

Anger, sadness, hate, regret. Those emotions leaving my mind beset. Unable to fathom the end of this cigarette, yet giving me option to reset.
As I lay down this cherry bayonet, I think of my former Juliet.
Think of nothing but her silhouette.
I then think of how she mastered the quartet,
further destroying my mindset.
I walk off after sunset, able to grasp that string no longer binds this marionette.

This empty feeling of mine.
Just when I thought I was fine.
It all happened in one line.
Crestfallen in my lonely shrine.
My heartstrings as brittle as twine.
Absent is the foundation of my spine.
So tempted I am to resigne.
For I no longer see the sunshine.

There's little interplay between lines. Most of your lines are independent clauses.

There's little rhythm in your poem. It reads awfully awkward with different lines in all kinds of different length.

>Anger, sadness, hate, regret. Those emotions leaving my mind beset.

You're telling me what you're feeling, but you're not really describing what these emotions do to you. Throughout the poem you're saying you feel sad, angry, empty; and anytime you try to relate these emotions to actions, you're writing grows frustratingly abstract. You speak of foundations, hearts, quartets, things that are meaningless objects to the reader and carry little meaning.

It really seems like you're being overly grandiose with what you're trying to say. You attempt to reach out with so many different, sudden illusions that aren't really 'set up' for the reader to understand or appreciate.

Are there any books that support or reject the idea of people being self-serving and selfish? I'd particularly like some fiction that discusses this.

As i grow older, i find it more and more difficult to believe that everything people do is for any other reason besides themselves. When someone does something good/noble, i understand their underlying motives as trying to impress people. When someone pays me a compliment, i search for a motive as to why they'd do that.

I don't want to end up bitter and cynical, but the more i learn about people and the world around, the harder i find it to keep a positive outlook at the actions of mankind.
