Does /lit/ like Hopscotch?
I do.
You should read it in Spanish though.
>>8403980
but I don't speak Spanish
>>8403959
I'm in love it, so /lit/ probably hates it. Also someone is gonna call me pleb in like five minutes after I post it, as it always happens.
Communists BTFO.
Holy shit this book opened my eyes on a lot of things, what's /lit/'s opinion on it?
Pretty sure general consensus here is that it's top 5 of all time.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
Hi there /lit/. I need to write a paper of 6000 words, with little knowledge about the subject. It's due to Friday.
Is this possible? Please give me some usefull insights on how to complete this quest.
>>8403895
Totally doable, but you better get off 4chan and start. Have you done any secondary reading? I'm assuming you're done with the primary source.
>>8403907
Yes I have some reading and some sources. I'm now trying to summarize 3 text into my paper
It's for college btw.
>>8403895
Yes. Draft up a rough plan for the essay, get the relevant literature and just start writing.
I wrote 8,000 words in one sitting when I had no other option, although I'd done a couple of days planning.
When I first saw his stuff (School of Life, etc) looked someone insightful or at least thought provoking.... Problem is... every time he makes a fucking thought provoking point he invites you into his cult and tells you to check out his shop.
Its always a snippet of something then a "Shop Here for THE ANSWER TO *PROBLEM*"
Has anybody actually read anything by him or bought any books from the "School of Life" shop?
Well, he has to make a living.
What do you expect him to do? Live in abject poverty because you're a fag who can't handle advertisement when it's about pop-philosophy, but you can when it's about candy or sneakers?
>>8403576
Read his books you absolute fucking retarded nigger. What the fuck do you expect from YouTube videos you asswipe.
>>8403576
his anti romantic talk is top notch

I'm not even sure what a meme is, so I will be working by the idea that it is a unit of cultural transmission.
SFFG memed me into reading Gene Wolfe. He is a writer of genuine literary merit, more so than many of the texts I studied at degree level. If fantasy is ever studied seriously, it will be Gene Wolfe first, before Tolkein.
Your pic lacks Arthur C Clarke, pic related
I share a surname with a Brandon Sanderson, and I still do a double take when people meme him, and refer to him by his surname only.
Fantasy produces the most memes because it has the most cliches at its worst, more so than sci-fi, which is a genre with more breadth.
>>8400703
>What meme did sffg get you to believe?
Wolfe being worth reading
>sffg memes that changed your life
In WoT the way the characters endure suffering was an important concept. I had learned it before I ever read the series, but I still give it credit because it recognized the phenomenon.
>Which genre creates the most memes
Typically the one with the most exposure and (due to volume of content and appeal to the masses [who, by sheer odds will have poorer tastes and therefore require a lower caliber of content for enjoyment]) largest audience.
E.g. Fantasy, anime, or Erotica. However, erotica isn't something discussed publicly, so there is no meme creation.
Fantasy and anime.
Is there a /lit/ iceberg chart?
there is but I con't find it in my /lit/ folder

You only ascend if you've read George's writings
Why don't we create one right now?
Getting into formal logic seems essential to understand modern philosophy. What are some entry-level books I should read?
The more mathematics you know, the better. If you really want to glide through much of the technical fields of analytic philosophy (phil of math, language, logic) I suggest getting a BSc in maths first.
If not, just work through Joseph Schoenfield - Mathematical Logic.
>>8396226
>Getting into formal logic seems essential to understand modern philosophy
Not exactly, depends on what you are interested in.
>What are some entry-level books I should read?
Not very familiar with the subject, but I'd say Wittgenstein, Russel and Godel are the most important authors from which a lot of contemporary philosophy was born.
Also, moden philosophy is everything since Descartes.
>>8396276
>not exactly
Logic courses are like 1/3 of the curriculum in analytic-oriented philosophy departments, seems pretty fucking big to me.
What are some good books that argue against social justice? Preferably not written by Vox Day.

Atlas Shrugged

Nietzsche obviously
rec me some books that will make me no longer a nihilist
>>8408648
Dostoevsky
>>8408650
Anyone of his books specifically? (Not OP btw)
>>8408908
Dostoevsky is actually a Russian nihilist. This guy is trolling. But Dostoevsky's most popular reads are "Crime and Punishment" and "The Idiot."
>The old morality, which told us that selling the body is incompatible with giving the self, touched on a truth. Sexual feeling is not a sensation that can be turned on and off at will: it is a tribute from one self to another and—at its height— an incandescent revelation of what you are. To treat it as a commodity, that can be bought and sold like any other, is to damage both present self and future other. The condemnation of prostitution was not just puritan bigotry; it was a recognition of a profound truth, which is that you and your body are not two things but one, and by selling the body you harden the soul. And that which is true of prostitution is true of pornography too. It is not a tribute to human beauty but a desecration of it.
Is he right /lit/?
Yeah, I'd agree
>>8408502
But isn't manual labor also selling the body ? and more prestigious careers selling the mind ? How is prostitution more base than either of those ? Your argument is pretentious and it assumes that human beauty has any value beyond the physical, which is baseless. There are billions of people in the world and a single individual has no value beyond what someone will pay.
>>8408534
>Sexual feeling is not a sensation that can be turned on and off at will: it is a tribute from one self to another and—at its height— an incandescent revelation of what you are.
Manual Labour and thinking are not the same.
How do I read literature so I can really "get it"? I want reap all of the benefits of literature that Bloom-sama proposed.

guys, how do you increase your attention span? I always feel myself losing focus while I'm reading. I was just trying to read steppenwolfe and I only got past like one page and no matter how hard I force myself to read, it's just like my brain gets all pouty and it just refuses to go any further. When I first pick up the book though I read really fast and it's no big deal. I don't know why all of a sudden I just become unable to focus and it feels like a chore all of a sudden. I feel the same way when I'm doing homework to be honest (which is probably why I got less than a 2.0 grade point average.
adderall
Watch less TV/Play less games
Read more books
Do math/something challenging regularly
also, if you are new to reading, don't start with hard books. Just read something that you like, don't care if it is pleb tier OP.
I enjoy reading. That normally does the trick.

literary x-ray thread. can someone x-ray this? also who is your favorite poet of the last 5 years. mine is rupi Kaur.
I want Rupi Kaur to sit on my fucking face and grind downward as hard as she can.
>>8408326
I never understood /b/'s obsession with x-rays.It has to be one of the most boring types of porn.
Also he's not famous or anything and opinions will probably vary wildly, but this guy's stuff is probably my favorite as far as contemporary poetry goes because it seems like he's willing to take a lot of risks with it, which feels like an increasingly rare quality in poetry these days.
