/lit/ What book should I buy with my first pay check?
I was thinking about the penguin publish version of Rashomon but don't know bout the translation
Beware of Penguin for stuff published before the 20s, they use old translations thay are in the public domain, you can find the same ones for free on the web.
The one that you've wanted forever, but slipped your mind.
Think on it, you'll remember which one it is.

Beware of them for things published after the 20s too. Penguin always go for bargain bin translations
I'd like to read some entry-level books in Spanish to bolster my shitty intermediate language skills.
What are some good Spanish-language literature or English translations that I could check out? I'd rather avoid Harry Potter or something like that, but I'm not totally against reading terrible books if it'll help.
Lezama Lima - Paradiso
Cuentos de la selva by Horacio Quiroga is THE entry level book
Something like kids books?
Read Papelucho, the epic 12-book chilean bildungsroman.
What are some swashbuckle-core works /lit/?

How did you like Chapter IX - "The Sermon"? The preacher's sermon on Jonah is one of my favorite passages in all of literature.
They fucking RUINED the cover. God damn I'm pissed.

fuck off back to /tv/
I usually write a fairly brief reaction after I finish a book and I've found it improves my recall. Give that a shot op.
How do you go about critiquing works of literature /lit?
i ask /lit/ if i liked it
I'm not an author so I can't critique a book. I can say whether I liked the book or not. I can take a stab at the themes of the book, but I am not a peer of an author. Therefore I can't critique a book.
I also highly doubt that you would be considered the peer of an author, so therefore, you can't critique either.
You try to become an author, give up on writing before your very first book, and then proceed to take jabs at what others actually bothered to finish
Would rather be a hunter or the hunted one?
*Would you
I hunt the hunters...

Watch Chomsky on French intellectual culture & Post-modernism on youtube
>400 books in backlog

Anyone want to do the math for me?
>>8440320
400 months
>>8440326
Thanks. Would have done it myself but I don't have access to a graphing calculator right now
If you learn speedreading, you could read them at a rate of one per hour.
>b-but u have to savor the prose or some stupid shit
Okay. Have fun not completing the Western Canon in your lifetime because you had to "do the voices in your head" like you're being read to by your alcoholic stepfather.
How is he the greatest writer of all time? He just wrote the same story over and over again.
>>8440299

>>8440299
>he just rewrote other people's stories
ftfy

Why does /lit/ hate this book again? I think that it is a good portrayal of yankee ingenuity.
>>8440298
Don't post again or else.

Any book recommendations on organized crime in the 1920s?
>>8440229
just watch boardwalk empire
then the sopranos
>>8440247
I specifically asked for books
>>8440286
the sopranos is LITERALLY the Great American Novel
What are films like Infinite Jest? Royal Tenenbaums is okay and Magnolia was great. I really enjoy that aesthetic. I heard Short Cuts was also Jestian, but Altman's style seems somewhat divorced from Wallace's so I'm not too sure of that.
Boogie Nights
i didn't read the book yet, but how about requiem for a dream?
Can homossexualism be philosophically proven wrong?
And no "b-but right and wrong don't exist" bullshit because we all know that's a fallacy. When I say wrong I mean detrimental to both man and society.
>>8440183
>Can homossexualism be philosophically proven wrong?
No.
>When I say wrong I mean detrimental to both man and society.
No
>>8440183
>society
It would be easier to argue homosexuality is beneficial to society currently, and heterosexuality for purposes of procreation is detrimental.
