I'm a complete pleb when it comes to poetry. When I read a poem, I can tell a lot of it is going over my head. Should I just keep reading more until they make more sense?
>>8455006
yes
No keep reading the same one until it starts to make sense
>>8455006
Start with easy stuff like Wordsworth, look for basic metaphors, like colour and stuff. Then move on to structure.
How do you read works like Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, or The Odyssey? It's so fucking difficult, I hate it so much when I can't just keep reading a book, and instead I'm met with road blocks that have no obvious explanation for what they mean. This is one of the reasons why I fucking hate classic literature, you have to be in some sort of classroom in order to be able to actually get through it. What the fuck!
>>8455001
>the odyssey
Did you skip the Iliad?
>>8455003
YEah...
Start small brother. Nothing wrong with excerpts for now either.
What's his deal with Nazis? He thinks Hitler went to Chile or what?
>>8455013
Well, I mean, Nazis DID sneak off to the southern parts of Latin America. I guess he never fully recovered from that fact.
His Nazis are metaphorical. They are literary commentaries. He explains it in an interview. You can find it on youtube.
I don't know if BolaƱo thought Hitler came to Chile, but I know old fascist movements in Chile thought fictional native american figures in this region were basically Spartans from ancient Greece/descendants of Aeneas.
Ok guys, where do you buy books?
I usually buy from bookdepository, but I'm angre at them at the moment (long story short: they send me some books that where just terrible editions and when I wanted to return them they asked me to pay for the shipping, which was like 60 dollars!).
Living in southamerica makes shipping cost very expensive, so, any free-shipping is good for me.
>Wordery used to be good, but they no longer send books to my country.
>kennys.ie is also good, but its a little bit more expensive.

what's the most accessible, easiest to read version of the odyssey, but which won't feel like I'm reading a children's adaptation and still feels poetically beautiful enough for someone who wants to read for pleasure, not academic study? I'm also looking to pick up a copy of the illiad too.
Pope, really.
>>8454850
just pick the good version, all of them are accessible

What would you guys say is the best way to forget someone who made your life bearable and then left?
Are there any works about this particular subject I should seek out?
I will not go into further details because I don't want this thread to become a blog. I'm asking a legitimate question.
>>8454799
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? (it's a movie though)
>>8454799

What's the best website with a very wide selection for finding academic book torrents?
Doesn't lib.gen and bookzz have a bunch? Is lib.gen back online yet?
>books
>torrent
https://libraryofbabel.info/LoB3D.html
Is this supposed to be fucking unreadable? I thought if I just went for it that I'd at least get a notion of what's going on. I read the first five pages, I felt this cold and dry feeling inside my head, very unpleasant. There's a guy shaving, some sort of gunrest, someone's mother who was murdered, and all sorts of strange things which I have a hard time understanding how they even fit into the narrative I'm reading. In this book, I may come across a few sentences that seem pretty straight forward, then come to another few sentences that I just have to skip for the sake of being totally incomprehensible. Who the fuck actually thinks this is one of the best books ever written?
>>8454716
That is one book like the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey where plebs discover it every year and don't know WTF it's about. Then 5-10 years later are the first to say it's the GOAT work of its artform.
>>8454716
I'm guessing that either English isn't your first language or that you aren't that experienced of a reader yet. The first couple of chapters of the book are pretty straightforward. I doubt most people on lit would have any problem with the first chapter. It's later on that it becomes more challenging.
>>8454716
Well if you've ever been across England's border it's pretty obvious that Scots are naturally hard to understand.
This will be my first Ayn Rand. I saw this and Atlas Shrugged in a box and picked up right away. What am I in for lads? Is this a good Rand starter?
how old are you?
>>8454704
22. why?
prepare for the pseudo intellectual Kant fags to jump on you.
It's a great book to read early. I've pretty much lived my life by objectivist principles since reading her books.
ITT books that are the same no matter what order the chapters are in
I've had the audiobook in shuffle, and it's interesting how little it changes.
>>8454680
I would argue there's a subtle but certainly extant intensification of the narrative that you'd lose
But for another example, Ulysses
How does that even work
>>8454680
The Bible.
Does /lit/ read RotTK? What translation do you read? I'm enjoying the Moss Roberts translation immensely.
>not reading a book with 108 protagonists instead
GTFO
>>8454662
I played Dynasty Warriors. It's basically the same thing.
>>8454685
I admit that's why I wanted to read the book but I'm really enjoying it, and previously having played the games makes it easier to remember who each character is
How do I sound less pretentious when I talk about literature with people?
I genuinely believe that great literature has a lot to teach about our place in the world and all that shit, but I'm worried that I come off as condescending when I talk to peers about books.
Anyone have experience with this? I'm a college student who wants to go into seminary, hopefully to become a pastor. Literature has helped clarify a lot of key points of my faith and I'd like to be able to share that in the least pretentious way possible.
>>8454630
Its really in the tone. You can have a geniune and passionate conversation with anyone about anything, even shoehorning in your most autistic opinions, if youre friendly and sincere. That and be open to friendly debate.
>>8454630
You can't possibly not sound pretentious because your goal in life is to preach nonsense at weak minds and wishful thinkers and shun all who understand subjects better than you do.
Go fuck yourself.
>>8454630
It sounds like pretense is your bread and butter anon. Maybe try the scientific method and stop approaching problems answer-first-question-later.
What does /lit/ think of this memer?
Gluttony is a sin.
I rest my case
>>8454612
His memes are great, witty as fuck. But can annoy people who dislike his style/Christianity.
I see him as a Catholic Nee Che.
>>8454619
I am a faithful Catholic and I think he is great but slightly overrated by Catholics. A bit too fortune cookie-ish for my taste
