Or is there slavish devotion to materialism makes them incapable of any great literary or artistic achievement?

well to be fair, marxist havn't really contributed anything of any worth to literature or art
Can, The Nation of Ulysses, the list goes on
Seems like a waste of time.
>>8461189
It is. I only want to delude myself of the painful misery that is my life.
Some people use drugs, or tv, or videogames. I use books. It's all the same. We all want to forget who we are.

>Some people use drugs, or tv, or videogames. I use books. It's all the same. We all want to forget who we are.
If this is your reasoning for reading great books you probably didn't read much, skimmed or just read "easy" books (genre fiction and YA)

What is important to you in life? Literature seldom offers you objective returns, just like music and movies. Stopping to listen to a full Mahler symphony is a waste of time just like reading Proust is. They won't offer you knowledge to make more money, to be more successful in your job, or get a qt gf or be popular, in this sense it is a waste of time, like all art is. They are enterprises that you do for yourself, not just mindless entertainment.
Its a medium that offers you the oportunity to question your values, makes you go beyond your confort zone, they may make you regret some choices in life, but they can also make you laugh, they may offer you beautys that you otherwise would never experiment, they can teach you how to see others beyong our vapid social filters, ways to connect with people that are no more and understand their time, their view, their lifes, rejoice in their experience and in their tells. Reading Paradise Lost, LusÃadas, Decameron or Moby Dick requires effort, but you will only know their worth if you pay attetion, if you give them your time, and if they can provide to me all those experiences I can't say they are a wate of time.

>ranking the bible #1
who even was the author and why do the chapters keep repeating themselves?
That's Beckett. Look at his eyes. Doesn't he look absurdly wise?
Those are the eyes of an old man, yet he is barely in his twenties.
How can someone acquire is wisdom eyes?
>>8461185
Acquire glaucoma
>>8461185
>That's Nietzsche. Look at his beard. Doesn't he look absurdly wise?

Are you autistic?
>forcing myself to read because I feel like I "have" to read something, even though I'm not really enjoying it, but I feel obligated
>>8461158
Read Stirner and you'll get over that spook
>>8461158
What are you reading, anon?
You are me in the recent past OP. Buy Nicholas Nickleby and start reading it and then youll realise the stupidity of your feeling.
Stop listening to lit when they tell you that books will make you smarter. Theyre disposable pieces of entertainment that in many cases are vehicles for the self indulgent barely disguised memoirs of the author. Or written only for the money.
Also, please to discuss the author which are remotely discussed on /lit/
I've only read Germinal, and its just great, the way he describes the common people is superb and so full os honesty that makes you wonder how he knows so much of the human mind, the characters are so alive and belivable that this factor, by itself, justifies the time spent in this novel
Also the story is moving and probably will get you in some way or another

Any particular edition/translation you would recommend?
The only thing I read of Zola was something either against the determinism of Saint-Beuve or Hippolyte Taine or both (???) or possibly against Proust's refutation in Contre Saint-Beuve or possibly parallel to Proust and I have no fucking idea but it was pretty good!
>finish reading a chapter
>immediately go to sparknotes for a summary and analysis
Let's get a pleb thread going
>>8461117
But thats pretty patrician
Sparknotes seems to be aimed at 17-year-old girls, it feels dirty when I go there, I'm a 23-year-old hairy fat guy who studies philosophy.

>Be me.
>Wrote plenty of quick greentexts for board I will not name.
>Whenever it came to original idea brain would shut down after a bit into the first chapter.
>Never really decided to do original book approach.
>Got high once and thought of doing a screenplay.
>Wrote a good deal of a 30 minute movie in 3 hours or so.
>Eventually came down, and couldn't continue.
>tfw
>Didn't want to become reliant on weed so stopped.

I'm pretty pathetic, how about you folks?
many people like to hate on Sam Delany...

Your mum.
>>8461102

>>8461088

Hey /lit/, I bought this album which came with a booklet briefly explaining 'The Books of Terror and Longing' and giving a background of Antiochians. I couldn't help but be deeply fascinated by this dark and obscure religion. Do any of you guys know where I can get a copy or translation? I couldn't find anything about the books anywhere. Also, what do you guys know about the religion itself. I'm incredibly interested in anything about it, and would love to discuss. Btw the album is 'Deathconsciousness' by 'Have a Nice Life'
>>8461084
Good taste so I'll give you a friendly bump
>>8461084
It's a great album anon but the booklet is mostly historical fiction, dare I say fan-fiction, written by Dan for the sake of artistic background accompanying the album.
>>8461084
I'm 90% sure he just makes all this shit up, same with the Giles Corey book.
/lit/ is said to be the smartest board by 4chan standarts and by comparing it to other boards I can say that this sounds somewhat reasonable. But I've also witnessed some pretty insane opinions on here. So I ask you some questions to determine how unreasonable some of your views are. Is there anyone on lit who
- doubts evolution?
- takes the bible or any other religious writing as literal truth?
- thinks equality and democracy are dooming western civilisation?
- unironically considers himself a social darwinist?
Highly intelligent people can hold wacky views. Intelligence is more about the process than the conclusion it ultimately reaches.
>- doubts evolution?
Yes. Why can't we doubt something?
>takes the bible or any other religious writing as literal truth?
Nope. At least not me.
>thinks equality and democracy are dooming western civilisation?
Nope. I do not care.
>unironically considers himself a social darwinist?
Nope. What the hell is that?
>he thinks equality and evolution are compatible
Secular Christians are hilarious. Read Nietzsche.
What's a good method of learning a language without paying for expensive online classes?
>picture irrelevant
I speak 5 languages and Im pretty sure you can learn this on your own without paying for any classes.
Step 1: Learn vocabulary (singular and plural). Try to learn 5 pages everyday. This might seem alot at first. But after a while it will take less and less time to learn words. ALWAYS learn them both ways.
2: Once youve learned like 20 pages, start learning some verbs. Learn the present time first. And slowly build towards other times once youve learned the most important verbs.
3. Only start learning the grammar once youve learned the most important verbs and you know alot of words!
For this I would recommend you buy/download a book. As I dont really know what language you want to learn, I cant really give any solid advice that can work for all languages.
Once youve learned alot of vocabulary, you can conjugage some times and know the basics of the grammar start READING! Reading is one of the most effective ways to learn a language. Look words up you dont understand and keep reading. It might be a little tiresome at first, but youll improve alot faster this way.
This works well for Germanic/Latin languages, I have no idea if you could do this aswell for Asian languages btw.
>>8461277
> alot
> twice
Put that on your list.
I would disagree. I think vocabulary is secondary until a full grasp of grammar is had. I dislike also the modern way of learning phrases.
(Ancient languages amateur.)

How do you go about creating a fantasy world?
I'm messing around with this map of europe to get some ideas for the Geo-political divisions in the world.
>>8460996
Updated the map.
Here are some political states.
My main story is going to revolve around a battle for the throne of humanity.
the 5 viable heirs all have radically different political and social policies they want to enact and the Main character, a adventurer from the coastal colonies and a highly decorated Adventurer has to decide who will lead the nation.
Also elf Shananigans
>>8460996
maybe u should actually have an idea of a good story first before you get all autistic over the map.
> Also elf Shananigans

That's not how deserts work and drop the cliche fantasy setting and do something creative. take a risk BITCH

Is this real?
why do boys keep getting molested and beaten up in this book?
That's what happens in Dublin
That's what happens everywhere.
Early 1900s Dublin was a profoundly shit place.
It still is, but only on the north side. The south side is full of insufferably posh people however so the north is actually preferable.
t, lived there for 5 years
Where do I move on from logicism?
I have read TLP and Philosophical Investigations, during that time Frege, some Whitehead and textbooks on logic, formal systems and theory of language. Can /lit/ recommend a book or an author that could capture my attention as much as the mentioned?
>someone on /lit/ actually reads
>>8460880
Well you could try 'The Principles of Mathematics'. I'm reading it at the moment. Russel has a rather dry style but it's interesting nonetheless.
enjoy, or whatever you do while reading, analyticfuck
