What are some /lit/ essential reading companions?
So far I have:
>Roget's Thesaurus
>Oxford English Dictionary
>A book on trees
>A book on birds

I'm seeking books that will expand my future reading and rereading experiences in this vein.

i tried reading Roget's Thesaurus, but it was boring. two hundred pages in, not a trace of a plot or character development. dropped.

The dictionary was a real page turner, though. It turns out the zebra did it.

how about just any mobile phone with internet access so you can just google that shit

George R.R. Martin is the best author ever. i genuinely believe the man is a literary genius. His ability to craft dramatic yet intellectually provocative stories, on such absurd grand scales, by himself, is rivaled only by Masamune Shirow's work with ghost in the shell. Like seriously guys, I can't even imagine how he's able to keep track of his thousands of characters and their family histories and the world lore without getting himself mixed up. To put this into perspective, people who have read all of ASOIAF generally agree that the TV series started off as an excellent adaptation of the books but has vastly decreased in quality as of late. Basically after they ran out of book material to adapt, the creative efforts of an entire team of HBO writers could not equal a single GRRM at storytelling. Pretty impressive.

Yes Shakespeare's work was groundbreaking but do you honestly believe he could have told a story on a scale of GRRM's? Are Edgar Allen Poe's works truly that more frightening than the best horror produced today?

Nope.

He deserves some merit but don't think he accomplished anything genius. He was heavily influenced by Accursed Kings, European history and some fantasy tropes. It was nice and well executed but not original.

op I wrote this

I wrote a song here it is.

Today we want to march,
Try a new march,
Through the beautiful Westerwald,
Yes, the wind whistles so coldly.

O, you beautiful Westerwald,
The wind whistles so coldly over your heights
However the smallest sunshine
Go deep into the heart!

And the Grete and the Hans
Going to Sunday for dancing,
Because dancing is fun
And the heart in the body laughs.

O, you beautiful Westerwald,
The wind whistles so coldly over your heights
However the smallest sunshine
Go deep into the heart!

If the dancing is over then,
Typically,
And the boy, who is not happy,
It is said to have no cutting.

O, you beautiful Westerwald,
The wind whistles so coldly over your heights
However the smallest sunshine
Go deep into the heart!

How do I learn about stuff, like if I want to talk about fancy ass types of cheeses, and the kind of make of tables, and architecture. Do you have to be a queer to write that kind of indulgence because they are outside of sexual selection so fill that void with useless aesthetics? Should I start fucking men in the ass?

Third-rate Pynchon desperate to impress with quantity rather than quality. Critics taken in by sheer volume: 20 books written before the age of 50, including Rising Up and Rising Down, 3,300 pages; Europe Central, 811 pages; The Royal Family, 780 pages; Imperial, 1,344 pages. Grist for dissertation mills, intends not to be read but admired, motivated by the same incessant logorrhea as David Kirby and Albert Goldbarth in poetry. Consistent strain of misogynist sadomasochism overlooked by awed critics. Hunting down prostitutes (especially Southeast Asian prostitutes) has been uber-nerdish preoccupation, both in life and writing. Stepped into the breach left by Pynchon's long silences, determined to churn out a full Pynchon a year. Encapsulates ethical vacuity of American fiction after the collapse of 1970s postmodernism. Any moral meaning is buried in indigestible compendiums of graceless sentences. His few readable pieces are those heavily edited by conventional magazines (such as his Taliban piece edited 40 times by the New Yorker). Intentionally kills narrative with digression, to prove his superiority over other writers. His travel books follow Orientalist conventions--the coy outsiderness--despite his radical pomo self-image. Myth of Vollmann the Nobelist has been assiduously cultivated--by himself! Among his notes to his poor Viking editor, Paul Slovak, on being advised to cut his books: "I actually believe I have a shot at winning the Nobel Prize"; "Almost never do I read the final product"; "I believe that this book is worthy of standing in the shadow of Gibbon"; "It should be classed in the canon of great books."

Which Stephen king books are worth reading? Or which are his best to see if you like his stuff? I remember disliking the dark tower first book but I don't see that as representative

None of them.
I have read a few but the endings always make what came before worthless.
Don't get me wrong. I think King has some merit and I do enjoy the nostalgia associated with that era of horror fiction but those endings... Wew.

Some of the short stories, but yeah don't bother with his books. He was clearly a pedo who couldn't end a book to save his life.

I honestly had no idea if that was his first. I usually scorn hipster books, and this seemed too proto for me. Am I enlightened now?

Do I REALLY need to read Kant to understand Nick Land's Fanged Noumena? I've read the Greeks, Hegel, Girard, Deleuze, Debord and Baudrillard. I have read very little on economics, just Hayek and Hazlitt. Bernays is my guy. Alex Jones did nothing wrong.

Basically I'm a brainlet and don't want to read Kant if I don't have to. It seems like the guy came up with very few answers and maybe asked a lot of dumb questions in the process.

I haven't read it but as far as I'm aware there isn't anything you should read first.

Some his more explicitly metaphysical works like "multiple states of the being" and "man and his becoming according to the vedanta" should only be read after reading his "introduction to the studies of the hindu doctrines" which doubles as an intro to Guenonian terminology and metaphysics.

However, in my understanding "Crisis of the modern world" was more intended for a mass audience or rather the westerner who seeks to understand the problems plaguing the west. My impression is that it's a sort of self-contained work and so understanding it is not predicated upon being familiar with his veiws already.

>Serrano's anti-modernist neo-Gnostic philosophy claims to elucidate the extraterrestrial origin of the Hyperborean-descended Aryan race, image-bearers of the Godhead, and postulates a global conspiracy against them by an evil inferior godlet: The Demiurge, worshipped by the Jewish people, lord of planet Earth, spawner of the primitive hominid stocks, and author of all base materiality. Serrano foremostly synthesized the Hindu-Vedic and Nordic-Germanic religious traditions, both of which he considered to be of ancient Aryan-Hyperborean provenance, in addition to particularly esoteric and racialist interpretations of Buddhism, Christianity (or "Kristianism"), Luciferianism (not to be confused with Satanism), and Gnosticism. He was especially indebted to the Jungian theory of collective racial archetypes, borrowed heavily from Julius Evola in supporting a spiritual consideration of race, as opposed to a solely biological one, and followed Savitri Devi in regarding Adolf Hitler as an avatar (a divine incarnation) who battled against the demonic materialistic hosts of the Kali Yuga.
