Where do I start/go with Faulkner and Steinbeck?
I haven't read anything of Faulkner. For Steinbeck, I've read The Grapes of Wrath, and I really enjoyed the prose, but I didn't sympathize with the farmers. So perhaps anything by Steinbeck that isn't about his views on this subject?
Steinbeck- Cannery Row
Faulkner- As I Lay Dying
Both nice entry points for their brevity

The Chrysanthemums is my favorite Steinbeck work. Its really good, and its a short story, so you can further gauge your interest there.

Is White Teeth worth a read? I have it checked out from my local library and it's overdue but laziness about turning it back and so on. I read some of NW but couldn't really get engaged so I moved on.
her first book was great, her second book was complete trash though..i heard good things about this one though
Have you degenerates read the Art of the Deal? No? Why not? Don't you want to learn about your next Potus?

By reading books written by him.

Just spread his bumcheeks and ram it in.

Notes from the Underground or Crime and Punishment are good books to introduce yourself to his work
Do people actually like this? It was boring af and besides one or two nice quotes a total waste of time.

hello plebo
Just returned my 3rd read Bond Book to the library. What does /lit/ think about the series, and more generally about Ian Fleming? I mean, I've already made up my mind, and I enjoy the books. But what about you?
>>8464894
Is there an interracial relationship between Bond and a black women in the books?
Saw a movie where he kissed a black girl and I almost vomited.
0/10, liberal pandering
>>8464915
Yes.

Then take this discussion to /r/books
Hey /lit/, can we have a thread discussing bookcases and reading chairs and the like? We had a pretty nice thread on this a couple of months ago. I'm looking for advice on buying a decent quality bookshelf and reading chair, I have books lying around everywhere at the moment and it's hell. Post your reading stations and discuss reading/writing furniture ITT.

I've got Ikea Billys for bookshelves, haven't had any issues with bowing on the shelves yet, though I've only had them a year. They seem really decent for the price. I definitely like them better than the awful shelves I had from Wal-mart for years.
I have Ikea things for reading in too, but none of them are all that comfortable (ekero, knopparp and poang). The $100 sofa is only decent if it's smothered in blankets.

You don't stop it. Not every idea you have is going to be good. You will write a lot of shit before you get anywhere near anything good. Why does everyone think they're going to shit gold every time they go to the bathroom here?
lets have a go at this, lads.

busy at work right now, the rest is in io9.
pleb here. i have a question about the bible: is it really a literary masterpiece if taken apart from the historical context or are the hundreds of studies and interpretations about, let's say, the tree of life and of knowledge, just a consequence of the bible's incredible popularity? in other words, is the hype justified or could we get the same depth out of harry potter if we studied it for centuries?
>>8464726
It's great literature, just read it you fag. The psalms are beautiful. If you flip through a modern translation with cheeto-stained fingers starting with Genesis 1 you probably won't get much from it, though.
>>8464726
There are parts worse than the list of ships in Iliad. There are other parts that are fantastic. Even the erotica.

>could we get the same depth out of harry potter if we studied it for centuries?
Of course. Imagine a world in which JKR's leg-stretching is considered the same way KJV english is now by anglos...
Where to start with pic related?
Greeks. Then Kant. Then Hegel. Otherwise you won't understand it, trust me. He's the only important existentialist other than maybe Heidegger.

Can't I just read a companion or something? I got too many other things on the side.
>>8464733
Not really, no. There aren't any good ones.
I can tell you how to live a Kierkegaardian philosophy in 2 seconds, but I can't prove why you should in that time:
Personal ethics > universal ethics > aestheticism
"To be or not to be" or "The universe is my will or the will is my universe"?
>implying there is a "not to be"
WTF is this thread? The two questions don't have anything to do with each other so is this just a choose between question A or question B thread?
To be or not to be, or should I flush the toilet?

"porn" is now also used to describe basically anything that gives the viewer pleasure. You can thank reddit for that. They have an entire "sfw porn network" with stuff like "nature porn, history porn, human porn" etc. But it's just photos that you might see in National Geographic.
