When I need to take a dump, I always bring any non-fiction with me because I tend to lose concentration with it more than any fiction stuff

The Martian. Incredibly funny and science.

I read it every few years. As I grow up, the book grows up with me. I loved it as a kid and up to this day - everytime I read it, I find something new. And I always find myself crying on the last chapter.
Did anybody read these books? I'm at page 150 and I'm wondering if it gets any better

A lot of people on reddit seem to be loving it, where's the disparage coming from if I may ask?
It doesn't.
The fantasy genre is pretty much just overwhelmed with mediocrity at this point.
Is it possible for a person who doesn't read much to write well?
>>8468468

>>8468468
Possible? Yes. Can you do it? No.

Every time I see a fat sow like this I am reminded that plenty of men still love this kind of pussy, maybe even prefer it. I would be interested in knowing why. Just imagine the smell rising from the folds of this fat broad. I'm not talking about all overweight women, I mean bona fide skanks.
As for the topic, it is possible to have good ideas and good imagination, and be illiterate. You need some literacy to write, and some reading is necessary to attain it.
After a certain point of literacy, the necessary of reading while writing is debatable. I recall crime author James Ellroy avoids reading books in order to avoid copy the ideas of others unknowingly.
Any good books about samurai?
Hagakure is really good. If you want to read something that feels like the Japanese Iliad then read Tale of the Heike.
The Samurai by Shusaku Endo

I don't know how it's even debatable. He makes Steven King sound like a Demigod.

basically, you can't know what I know, F.U.
when you think about it, it's the most patrician way of life.
>>8468275
Could you go into a bit more detail on this? Sounds pretty interesting desu
>>8468270
Gnosticism is interesting because it's an attempt to answer why evil exists. There are many types, but a lot of them have Dualist, which is to say that they believe the world was created by a lower emanation than the real God. The world creator is merely a Demiurge, an architect, (variously seen as vengeful, boasting, and equated with the (Old Testament God) and his creation is flawed, and so evil and vice and ignorance can be explained as the inevitable consequence of a flawed creation.
Gnostic sects constructed a mythology to explain things, and riffed on Christian ideas. Their popularity and rising influence threatened the institutional church in the early centuries.
There is a good podcast with academics who give a summary of Gnosticism. Look for Mervyn Bragg's In Our Time podcast on the BBC website.
Like Bloom I find it fascinating. There is the whiff of the occult about it, of secret knowledge. It is as seductive a belief system as it is incendiary (The Old Testament God as a lesser, evil God, with a greater God above him.)
I wrote a book and got tired of waiting for an agent to respond (response times are in the months). So I decided to self-publish it as an eBook on Amazon, but now I'm having trouble getting any publicity. Any suggestions on marketing, /lit/?

Is Goethe's Faust a mandatory reading before this? Or just a summary is enough. Are there references to it? I gather this is a reworking of the traditional legend, so maybe not.
Also, is this good? Any comments?
