reddit tier authors. what makes an author reddit tier? is it a publicity thing? is it because they are easy to read?

The Road isn't reddit tier, just because it avoids being 2deep4u doesn't mean that it's shallow. McCarthy's writing style in this book resembles Zen poetry very much. It's free from all romanticism, pompousness, and intellectual interpretation. All it does is showing the world in the most truthful way. A true form of art leaves no room for interpretation, but instead it delivers the aesthetically pleasing logic of poetry. This is why The Road is the Kino literature.
>>
>>8525681
but he's one of reddits favorite authors.

Mainly popularity and a bit of ease of accesibility/readibility

But McCarthy is not reddit.
Also I think the Kite Runner is a lovely book and I will beat the ass of anyone who trashes Hosseini

'Writers go wrong, according to Coelho, when they focus on form, not content. "Today writers want to impress other writers," he told the paper. "One of the books that caused great harm was James Joyce's Ulysses, which is pure style. There is nothing there. Stripped down, Ulysses is a twit."'

What did he mean by this?

isnt it extremely embarrassing to be an anti-intellectual writer
>>
I don't agree with him that Ulysses is like that.

But I see his overall point, and it's the same point DFW also had in one of his interviews. Some people are overly educated and are writing to impress other overly educated people, which is fine of course, but they shouldn't whine if most people find their stuff inaccessible or downright shit.

Why start with the greeks and not with the beginning? The Sumerian myths.
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>8525522
Because everything the Mesopotamians wrote is horribly terse and short and pretty much devoid of any literary (as opposed to historical/anthropological) merit.
You can't blame anyone for skipping them and starting with the Vedic Aryans instead.
Even the Egyptians- who were writing things of interest centuries before the Sumerians- were better stylists- much more æsthetic art and writing system too. And the literary gap from them to the Greeks and Hebrews is still enormous.
>>
Did people even have those available for most of western history?
The point of "start with the greeks" isn't in order to satisfy some kind of chronological autism, but to read the common literary heritage of western civilization. The Epic of Gilgamesh was discovered in the 19th century, so it's not gonna be referenced and assumed in the majority of the "Canon".
>>
>>8525566
They influenced the bible. The bible's a big deal in the common literary heritage of western civilization.

>Andrei Tarkovsky, The Interview: What can we say constitutes a masterpiece in the West? Even during the Renaissance, it is always the cry of human soul, which expresses a thousand desires: Look how happy I am! Look how unhappy I am! Look how I suffer! Look how I love! Look what villains encircle me! Look how I struggle against evil! Look how I perish under the weight of evil! Look how I prevail!
>In other words: Me! Me! Me!

Can someone give me some advice on how to get into poetry? I'm not sure where to start. I bought a cheap norton anthology of poetry, norton anthology of modern poetry, both for a cent plus shipping on amazon, as well as a modern poetry collection called "poems for the millennium" in three volumes, also for very cheap. The thing is, do I just leaf through the pages to whatever random poet I decide to read, and just discover poets that way? Is it even a good idea to read all these "classic" poets, or are there much broader and more appealing ranges of poets once you look past the classical stuff?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8525375
Are there interpretations of the poems next to them? That can be nice and help you see why it's good. Some stuff you'll miss at first.

I would go chronologically, reading a few poems every day. This way you get a sense of the movements and styles. I don't really get what you mean when you say that you would fin something broader past the classical stuff. Reading the classical stuff provides a context to read more poetry. You could also gain this context by looking some extra information up online or in books. If you like a certain poet you can buy a bundle.

I wouldn't be too concerned about analyzing meter. That's only important when you want to write poems yourself or if you're an acaddemic.
>>
>>8525394
>Are there interpretations of the poems next to them?
None what so ever. A lot of the poetry in these books is very hard to comprehend, for me at least.
>I don't really get what you mean when you say that you would fin something broader past the classical stuff
I mean broader as in a broader ranger, as in I'm sure there's plenty more interesting poetry outside of the classic poetry.
>>
Read them out loud, read only a couple a day and reread them to give you time to think about them. Don't worry if you don't get them, just keep reading until you find one that speaks to you.

What 21st century books do you think will be called "classics" and considered some of the best ever written in a generation or so?
25 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Many of the classics of yesteryear are called classics not because they are particularly better written than their contemporaries but because they speak for the time they are written.

Lolita is expertly written of course but it is remembered as a classic for being part of the sexual liberation of the 60s.

While those might be good books do they really depict the world and its concerns as it is now, are they necessarily going to be remembered?

Am I the only one around here who adores him? He was so pompous and proud, with a rock 'n' roll attitude as a young man, and now that he's in his eighties he's the cutest old man (whilst still being prolific). Besides, most of his facetious quips and opinions are well-deserved and come from a good place (if only to spark conversation at the very least). And his best work is on par (and arguably even surpasses) the works of other SFF greats like PKD and Wolfe. He's written 10,000+ short stories--there ought to be gems worthy of great praise (and there definitely are, lots of them). Why doesn't he get more love on here? Most of the SFF-related threads on here are either about PKD or Gene Wolfe. Just, damn. Who else loves him and his work as much as I do?

He's written some fantastic stories. I don't think he surpasses PKD, but he does surpass Wolfe.

His nonfiction writing is pretty fantastic, too.

yes, Harlan, you are the only one around here who adores him. you are the only one who posts these "who loves harlan ellison" threads, and i am the only one who demands you hand over all of the stories you collected for "The Last Dangerous Visions", since it's fucking obvious you aren't going to ever publish the fucking thing.

Excuse me. I have to call bullshit on this. Can you list all ten thousand stories he's written, or point to a list somewhere?

You aren't including all the anthologies of other peoples' work that he wrote introductions for, are you?

Did Martin Luther realize that when Paul (unlike James, who mentioned cases like Rehab the Prostitute) was talking about works, he meant works of the law, such as circumcision and eating Kosher (which Paul made clear)? He didn't mean you don't need works in a more general sense. It sounds like Luther misunderstood

>Know that Marriage is an outward material thing like any other secular business.

>But the woman is free through the divine law and cannot be compelled to suppress her carnal desires. Therefore the man ought to concede her right and give up to somebody else the wife who is his only in outward appearance.

>Suppose I should counsel the wife of an impotent man, with his consent, to giver herself to another, say her husband’s brother, but to keep this marriage secret and to ascribe the children to the so-called putative father. The question is: Is such a women in a saved state? I answer, certainly

>I confess that I cannot forbid a person to marry several wives, for it does not contradict the Scripture. If a man wishes to marry more than one wife he should be asked whether he is satisfied in his conscience that he may do so in accordance with the word of God. In such a case the civil authority has nothing to do in the matter.

>Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, aye, and even sin a little to spite the devil, so that we leave him no place for troubling our consciences with trifles. We are conquered if we try too conscientiously not to sin at all. So when the devil says to you, “Do not drink,” answer him, “I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to.” One must always do what Satan forbids. What other cause do you think that I have for drinking so much strong drink, talking so freely and making merry so often, except that I wish to mock and harass the devil who is wont to mock and harass me. Would that I could contrive some great sin to spite the devil, that he might understand that I would not even then acknowledge it and that I was conscious of no sin whatever. We, whom the devil thus seeks to annoy, should remove the whole Decalogue from our hearts and minds.

>Christ committed adultery first of all with the women at the well about whom St. John tell’s us. Was not everybody about Him saying: ‘Whatever has He been doing with her?’ Secondly, with Mary Magdalen, and thirdly with the women taken in adultery whom He dismissed so lightly. Thus even, Christ who was so righteous, must have been guilty of fornication before He died.

Luther seems to hate contrition as well.

Not even Catholic, btw, I'm Orthodox
