Are there any successful authors on this board?

I have a good idea for a novel. I figure since it's got a catchy story and can be built into a series it's my only chance at not having a 9-5 wageslave job and potentially being rich one day. Right now I'm at 16,000 words. I figure if I just work on it all I can until I'm finished then I'll just have to edit and get as much feedback as I can.

What are the chances of making money off of a novel after finishing? What are the chances of getting a literary agent? Is there anybody on /lit/ that makes money as an author? Any super successful authors that post here?

I think a few of us will emerge eventually but we're mostly in our early 20's.

Getting a book published is tough. Think about it like going to a city like Nashville or Austin, both absolutely crawling with talented amateur musicians. Most of these musicians are at least good enough for a few dollars at the door, and a good amount of those are on the level of signed/touring bands.

Obviously, the problem goes beyond just money. Its who gives enough of a fuck to listen to all of that music, even if it is all good? Publishers aren't going to be impressed if you're a good writer - there are plenty of good writers - they want your work to either be marketable or groundbreaking, two things that are a lot harder than good.

Good luck OP. This isn't meant to be discouraging, but its a tough industry Think about how many should-be classics sit in bargain bins because nobody bought them.

If you're serious about it, start self-advertising online when you're close to the end of a good draft. Release your best chapter early and get your friends to follow you on Facebook/twitter. If it seems like your book will be easier to sell, that's a significant leg up on your competition.

I think it would have been better if you provided the short story, OP, or if you were never born at all.

Are reference books works of literature?

Sometimes you encounter one so lovingly and carefully compiled as to approach art, I think (pic related).

De re metallica is sort of a 16th century version of this "comprehensive labor of love" concept.

The translation into English was done by, of all people, future US president Herbert Hoover.
(See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_re_metallica)

This book is pretty much the sum total of metallurgical knowledge extant in the pre-industrial era.

The OED is probably the pinnacle of this form. Way beyond being any one person's "labor of love", although several throughout its history have certainly made their contributions to it in that spirit.

I think the existence of the OED makes Modern English a unique landmark in the history of literature. Imagine if there were and equivalent contemporary work for ancient Latin, Greek, or Sanskrit. Imagine how, if it survives, it will color and inform the understanding of scholars of our period a thousand years in the future.

Then why do so many people still do it? It can't be that they are all ignorant of a famous piece from the late 19th century.

I'm about 75% done with my current. Gearing up to edit and release online a Christmas short i did a year or two ago.

Noticed how my shorts are getting shorter. Originally i was hitting 25-15 odd pages and now I'm usually beneath 10. I think my style has changed a lot since i focused more so on shorts than novels.

why doesn't anyone ever mention how funny this book is? I'm 150 pages in and it's hilarious. the fake doctor about 10 pages in was a great opening. all I ever see is people post about how hard it is. it also doesn't seem that hard. is Jonathan Franzen just retarded?

"That it was difficult...that it was among the first books of black humor and so forth, but, of course, we all came out of Mark Twain’s vest pocket. No one has ever beaten “The Mysterious Stranger.” But that whole world of the amount of information, what they called erudition, frightened off many people. Very very few reviewers said it is often very funny. It was a sometimes heavy-handed satire but I wanted it to be a large comic novel in the great tradition."
>>
Most of the book isn't difficult. The last 200 pages or so are.

He also talks, in another interview I can't recall right now, about how he's baffled by all of the "serious novelists" who purposefully make their 1k-page tomes as dry and glum as possible, how he intentionally wrote in a lot of jabs, jokes, puns and pranks into his books not just to keep the carnivalesque atmosphere but to keep himself entertained as well (in one of his mid-70's letters, he says he's glad he's almost done editing JR because then he'll never have to read it again).

Alright well, I thought I was safe for life. I didn't think it would ever come to this, bros but, these women never learn. Today in my philosophy class some young poser slag with a nose ring, forearm tattoo, and a flannel tied around her waist brought in a copy of pic related. She told the professor she was reading it, asked, him his opinion of Heideggers work, and they talked about the best translations for a while. There was even a bookmark placed some hundred or so pages in.

This wouldn't be such a problem if I haven't been carrying the same book around all semester waiting for someone to notice my intelligence and good taste, of yet to no avail. Who does this bitch think she is? What should I do here?

hello, i come in need of help.
I have this very important paper due next week and i cant seem to find a relevant answer to one of the questions, so i hoped we could start a discussion here and solve it together.

Question:
Although fictional, of Mice and men is a story of a failed attempt at the American Dream. Provide examples of this and explain how the novel can be seen as a metaphor, for the current political and social situation?

I got the first part of the covered, it is the second part about the current politic and social situation i cant seem to find a relevant answer to. please help me with this
