Candide
Beloved

I've read that. It had like one good chapter in it, the rest was quite forgettable. What is it that makes it bait?
D-Did i get memed?
Just picked them up but apparently there is no disernible talent in any of them!
Nice, you spent money on books you're too stupid to understand.
>>8538300
we are on /lit/ after all!
>>8538262
2666 is beautiful andI read it before it was memestatized.
Why is it that people so readily believe in materialism and nihilism and such? Post-Kant is this not the same as believing in a creator god ? I have a hard time making sense of it. Is there lit on this? Is there lit that provides evidence for such claims which I missed out on?
It all seems so silly to me but at the same time it seems to upset a lot of people that "nothing matters" and so on, so I thought I'd make a thread. Only good feels itt pls :3
>>8538249
it's easily embraced because it's the easy way out of existential anguish, although it only masks it, making despair the rock upon which they stand, and they refuse to look down
>>8538402
Ok let me ask using your terms, who invented this "existential anguish" and why do so many people peddle the thing when it is evident (to all?) that it's not a real solution?
Thanks for the reply btw
>>8538547
it's not an "invented" thing, it is caused by the sin we are born into. kierkegaard said sin is despair. etymologically, despair breaks down into "des" and "pair" so it means it is a disunity between two entities, the two being the eternal and the finite, God and man, the soul and the body, etc. in this state, man is not truly himself, he is damned from himself, and will die unable to attain selfhood, and will be cast into the fire like rotting wood. a man in this state, whether he is aware of it or not, this is how it is, and he is in despair and afraid of death, be it deep down or right on the surface.
jesus saves, btw
I'm on chapter nine and The Judge has done nothing wrong. When does he start being bad?
>>8538242
Why should we tell you? Enjoy the ride, don't spoil it.
>>8538242
He's actually not such a bad guy. He's a dog lover and even adopts an indian child at one stage.
>went to the library to finally start reading
>saw a cute girl at the computers panicked and left
i'll try again tomorrow
Iktf
>>8538180
>stare at cute girl for way too long before realizing it
>decide to never do anything social so it can never be brought up
Well, at least you didn't post the white supremacist frog with this thread, so I'll give you credit for that.
Hello, /lit/
I need a book to read. Any suggestions?
I'm a huge Orson Welles, 1985 is my favorite book ever
Pretty lame. Not even a titter.
>>8538132

>skip over bits as you read in a hurry,
what did he mean by this?
>>8538123
He's a pleb.
>>8538123
do people not do this when reading a long book? if i start reading a section that i know is irrelevant i just quickly glance at the paragraph and skip it. i thought this was common sense for speed reading...
>there are people who skim over war and peace
just
I have an idea. Write the first line of the book or books you are currently reading and others will try to guess which book is it.
I'll start with a soft ball:
<< Mademoiselle Albertine est partie >> ! Comme la souffrance va plus loin en psychologie que la psychologie !
>>8538115
Easy one 2bh
>Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,
ché la diritta via era smarrita.
>>8538129
are you italian?
is it a popular book?
Friendly reminder to buy from your local books stores, not Amazon, and support local business.
>>8538091
if they want my business maybe they should 1. stock the books i want 2. price better
>>8538101
this, I went down to the bookstore today and the only philosophy they sold was by Zizek,Hitchens and Dawkins, I shit you not. The girl who worked their didn't even know who Max Stirner was.
my local store has terrible selection and even worse pricing
i'm in there a lot to browse but i can't support them as it is right now
Who are some authors whose works read like very well-written creepypastas?
That is, atmospheric, comfy, mysterious and creepy.
Danielewski is one I can think of.
Danielewski is a hack.
>>8538114
who is good then?
>>8538142
John Green
Do those really work? My friend recommended me few like: Models, The Book Of Pook and The Natural by Richard Gambler.
I'm curious if anyone has succes stories with these. I only read 2 self help books in my life.
How To Win Friends And Influence People - wasn't realy eye opener, some nice tips though like the one about listening. I focus more on listening now, before I was only waiting for my turn to talk. (I've always had many friends and this book didn't do very much for me. I think it's more helping for a working enviroment with colleagues and coworkers.)
Mini Habits Smaller Habits, Bigger Results - Great one! I learned so much about, and it generally helped me in starting in finishing stuff in my life, which led me to some beautiful memories and wonderfull people.
They have some decent tips. I read the book in the pic. It basically says:
Don't be a prick and greet people by name.
>>8538069
>self help books
Is this really what this board as become? My god we have descended into madness
>>8538286
DFW read tons of them.
Moby Dick is a great book. Im currently reading it, im halwfway through and although im enjoying it its taking me more time than i expected to complete it
What are your experiences with this novel?
If I were a billionaire, had a mother to my child, I would fill his nursery with Rousseau, then, when he became of age we would switch rooms and I would feel at home.
>>8538010
The same as yours.
>>8538010
I've yet to read it, is it much different from Heart of Darkness?
What do you guys usually do after you're done reading a book?
Any rituals? Do you look for places to discuss it? Or are you just on to the next one?
>>8537942
Sometimes I read some criticism if the book has any readily available. Other than that I usually spend the remainder of the day (I do my reading in the morngins) pondering over the work and come to some final conclusion before i start my next book the following morning.
>>8537942
Once i read an Agatha Christie novel, i jerked off and came between the pages. To hide my shame i dug it in my garden.
i wait a few days and start another one
why is he a recluse?
Why not?

Where do you find books online?
I'm trying to find Bunker diary by Kevin Brooks.
Tried searching from Piratebay, Kickass, Libgen, Bookzz. No results.
On the same subject, does anyone have/know of a place I can get a mobi/ePub of Kyle Minor'a "In the Devil's Territory"? "Praying Drunk" is easy to find.
>>8537869
Its up on bibliotik
>>8537881
