So /lit/ help me out with this

I was reading the dialogue between Socrates and Thrasymachus

Thrasymashus says that what is right is to obey the interests of the stronger party (aka a government), Socrates says that if the stronger party makes a mistake and then the people following the laws are no longer really doing what is right because the law is no longer to the interest of the stronger party.

Thrasymachus says that a craftsman, such as a mathematician, or a doctor; cannot make a mistake. So a ruler cannot make a mistake and does whats best for himself, so "right" is when the subject follows the laws made.

My problem is that this makes zero fucking sense, a doctor and a mathematician can make mistakes, insomuch as a ruler can. How the fuck then can Thrasymachus say that they cannot make mistakes?

>>
I did not read this particular dialogue but it's pretty obvious that the >implication is that even if these craftsmen make mistakes, they do so not out of malice or incompetence, but because such things are inevitable therefore it's foolish to consider them such.
>>
>>8615777
I don't think that's what they were getting at, but thanks!
>>

>a doctor and a mathematician can make mistakes,

A doctor can make mistakes, i.e. scalpeling the wrong organ, but surely a mathematician can't. The mathematician discovers mathematics.
If he's making a mistake it must either be in his own calculations or a fault in the fabric of his doctrine.

IDK

I don't think we actually get any points for reading gay ass greek things.

If you're new to Philosophy you might as well skip the greeks, they're redundant now anyway.

ITT: We post our favourite Dylan lyrisc. I'll start.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Shadows are falling
And I been here all day
It's too hard to sleep
And time is stealing away
Feels like my soul has
Turned into steel
I still got the scars
That time didn't heal

I hope a computer programmer wins next year. Code is 'written,' either expertly or badly, and expertly written code is aesthetically pleasing. Give it to one of the Assassin's Creed guys. Ben Davis. Give it to Ben Davis. He writes, he's an artist. Code is literature.

I really want to start reading more, however I believe I've been scarred from the instant gratification from video games, internet etc.

I start to read and some books are great, such as 1984 I couldn't put it down, but for some books I really struggle to maintain attention.

Are there any other anons who share this and is there a way to remedy this?

Sorry for slightly off topic thread but with all these bob dylan threads I'd say this is pretty decent bred

>I want to lift heavier weight, what should I do?
>I want to swim longer distances, what should I do?
>I want to be a better basketball player, what should I do?
>I want to be better at talking to girls, what should I do?

does this line of questioning not annihilate your post?

the answer, ofc, is to read more. Any book you find a struggle to read simply put down. There is some level of book you can read (clearly this includes 1984 for example); read those. If you want suggestions, it would be helpful to have a list of a half-dozen or so books you've read that you've enjoyed.

as an aside, I wouldn't worry that you've been "ruined" by video games or tv. the issue with these mediums (in relation to reading) is that for many people they fulfill or eclipse the desire or motivation to read. You clearly have that motivation as evidenced by this post, so you have the ability.

Is it normal that a person doing a PhD in pure mathematics finds Dosteyevski's book "The Karamazov" so boring?

I read "Crime and Punishment" back in 2009(I hadn't gone to college yet) and it was really cool. It was the last piece of literature I read until this month.

Me being bored with this book could be the byproduct of too much math, or too much trivial entertainment from t.v. or the internet?

Is there anyone here who enjoyed the book?, what's so good about it?

you seem to believe that your maths experience has ruined your taste for this book, but what books has it not ruined for you?

No, usually pure mathematics implies a degree of intelligence as opposed to retardation.

How do you criticize literature? More specifically, how can there be a specific method when literature is art and therefore appeals to the senses and doesn't yield reproducible results like hard sciences?

Any way you like. Convincing others that your method and views are worth taking note of is the hard part.

Mistakes of the subhumans.

They immediately interpret the idea of subjectivity as giving them free reign to support any viewpoint that they want, no matter how incoherent, ignorant and wretched. Sure, the ant too has its own perspective of things, and therefore its own subjective reality, but who gives a shit about the reality of an ant? The greater the man the greater — and hence the more objective — his perspective, and therefore the idea of subjectivity does not undermine the absolute rule of inequality in the universe but is precisely the mechanism by which it comes about.

ITT: /lit/izens who are Dylan fans and consider his lyrics to be literary.
My daddy was a Dylan fanatic, and I grew up swathed in his words. I also grew up surrounded by books and read to endlessly.
I have to say it: his lyrics are poetry. And they are literary. And I've been in /lit/ for 3-4 years since migrating from the text boards.
Join me.

I believe Dylan is literary and a fine poet but I still think there were other people more, not necessarily worthy, but..idk, in taste I guess to award the Nobel to. Everyone and their grandma knows who Dylan is, his place in the canon of culture is cemented.
>>
He's the best beat by all means. Not much else.
>>
His lyrics are good I guess but I don't think they come close to even an average poet
