You couldn't get a marketing firm to help for thousands instead of some random Chinese people with a few laptops?
>>

This. You need reviews AND marketing. Not one or the other alone.

I don't know much about reading, but is the taste of the people on this board basically as shitty as the taste of people on /mu/ who are just getting into music? I look at some people on that board, and some people go off and develop their own taste and their charts won't look anything like the people who are obviously new and just listen to the exact same thing everyone else is listening to. I look at the recent vote that went on on this board and I see how it's the same chart as the chart of the last 2 years, I sort of wonder of when I look into the books that this board talks about if this is like, the entry level taste that you see on /mu/ but in book form.

I know it's probably better than most people who don't read books, duh. But there's always going to be that pocket of people with super patrician taste, like these guys in my city who organize avant garde music concerts, who I went to to talk to before the concert one time and they all sort of treated me like a creep and weren't nice to me at all; so I ended up never going to see any shows that they put on ever again. I just hate being so lonely sometimes you guys, I really hate living in total isolation, I don't have any friends and I haven't had any pretty much since elementary school, when making friends was as easy as inviting your whole class to your birthday party, or asking people if they want to come over to your house for a sleepover.

Are there any literary subjects that you won't ask your family for as gifts etc?

For me, it is dinosaurs.
For some reason people just don't understand that books about dinosaurs can be for adults and can be fascinating non fiction.

I don't get it.
I asked my parents as a birthday gift for some 'dinosaur books'. I was hoping they might get me some non fiction, word heavy books discussing the Science behind dinosaurs and their history in this planet.

What did I receive?
Pic fucking related, along with about 3 other childrens books with cartoon fucking dinosaurs. As I opened the gifts they made mocking 'roaring' noises to make fun of me and instead of a card I got a drawing of a PS4's fossil because 'we were going to get you a PS4 but they had gone extinct'.

I don't get it- Dinosaurs are a fucking FASCINATING subject. Why are they treated like childrens entertainment? There isn't enough good literature on them to begin with but I expect people to understand dinosaur books do exist.

I only got money from my family for the last decade or so. I don't even need the money since I have a pretty nice salary nowadays. I would really enjoy a simple well thought out gift.

not a poem but this is a sentence from a letter I wrote to a friend:

My table is a wooden balcony rising from a hill above a field. Pick a point on the lawn. Stare and see the butterflies flit above the grass. Micro Mirages. Shimmering cuts on the eye. Glass on the air.

Pareces de marmol vivo
De ese que respira
De ese que exige olvido

Mis palabras se resfalan
Pretenden hacerte el amor
Tu piel se desentiende

Solas
Espiral de frustración

Tus ideas me son ajenas
Ignoro tu risa interior
Conocer?
Saber?
Tocar?
Probar?

Ver, pero solo una impresión
Y olvídate, corola sin flor

A una voz en caida libre
Solo piedra le hara frente
>>
Perderse en el jardín de tus manos
Es despertarse sincero sobre nubes de cielo sin penumbra
Oír el divino canto de otro segundo que descubramos
Sentir la tormenta que tu aroma vislumbra

Deseo contigo, amante empedernida, capturar éste momento

Would JK Rowling or Stephen King or a big name genre author winning the Nobel Prize be less controversial and more accepted than Bob Dylan winning?
22 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>8623019
Since the problem with Dylan is really that he doesn't produce literature and won it, I'll go with no.
>>
>>8623027
but /lit/ would erupt into more of a shitstorm if either of those two won instead of what we actually got.
>>
Depends on the writer. Le Guin or Wolfe probably wouldn't draw the same ire. King or Rowling definitely would.

Hey, /lit/. I have a weird request. I've been reading this sci-fi novel that has an incredibly minor side-plot about the characters in their early twenties having an affair in a sweet and awkward way. You see, I haven't been in love or even had a crush in a long time and it's like that part of the book let me once again experience those feelings of my youth. I'd really like to read something like that. As far as I know most of "serious" romance literature explored deeper themes about love and attraction than I think I want. Any of you guys know what I'm talking about?

Stranger in a Strange Land?

I mean it's sweet and awkward up until the murder.
>>
>>8622911
you're talking about how you're not in touch with your emotions lmao
>>
>>8622913
I don't thing sweet and awkward is required. I guess I just want descriptions of people falling in love that are good enough to make me, an old neckbeard, wistfully look back at the time when I used to have that. It doesn't have to be sci-fi. It's just that on the top of /lit/'s suggested romance novels is Love in the Time of Cholera and I'm pretty sure it's about things way more heavy that I'm talking about.

Hey, thanks for the pitch for the thread. Some initial thoughts: It's okay, but at the moment way too general. We find that the most commenting activity happens on threads that have a particular angle or 'hook', ones which invite comments on a more specific topic. However we'd be happy to take a look at a revised version of your thread!

Best wishes,

Post cringey promps from leddit

Prompt:

You're driving a long, dark stretch of highway, when Death appears in the passenger seat, informing you that you are about to die. The car then spins out of control, flipping, and you black out. You wake up, hours later, in a deserted field. Death is laying lifeless on the side of the highway.

Response:

"WHO FUCKS THE DEATH NOW?" you scream at the top of your lungs. As the universe seems to all align to your whim, a Mustang appears with "If I Had A Trail" by qotsa blaring on its radio. "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" asks the parchment-white driver with a Cheshire grin, and instinctively you know you've met Lucifer. "Get in," she says which you obey, limping, tracking blood on the red leather of the passenger seat. "Let me tell you about the emperor's new clothes."

From the same thread (this is the top voted comment, mind you)

"You search through death's cloak and find a small card with print around the edges too small to read. You can barely make out the words. They say something about taking the sickle and putting on death's cloak. As you go to pull the cloak off of him it's mysteriously empty with no body inside. You drape the cloak around yourself and pick up the sickle, agreeing to a contract you couldn't read and becoming the bringer of death yourself."

I'm starting to think plebs putting down books because of "unlikable characters" is due to series fiction. Characters need to be "likable" in order to sustain people reading book after book of the same shit, so when they get to fiction that actually doesn't exist to pander to them so they may be milked for cash over multiple books, they get confused. And they flock to series fiction since from watching TV shows they're used to that as a format. Am I on the right track here?

Went looking through the archive, catalog, and the Wiki that had herpes level of ads.

Can anybody recommend me some hard-boiled detective novels? I'm looking for a page turner, maybe a first person perspective, with plenty of fights, smoking, drinking, swearing, the works. Can you help me?

Writing my masterpiece here /lit/, and I have a quick query. If you're painstakingly going through documents to find out about something, do you 'pour' through them or 'pore' through them?
