Can I still be a good writer if I drop out of school?
No, you need to pass through some kind of college-like academic factory before you reach the level of maturity required to write well. There is not one prole on this earth capable of writing well, prove me wrong.

I believe Ray Bradbury had only a high school education.
ITT: New Reader Thread
I started "seriously" reading at the start of this year (thank you /lit/) and have so far read:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Bartleby the Scrivener
Cat's Cradle
The Catcher in the Rye
A Confederacy of Dunces
Fahrenheit 451
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72
The Great Gatsby
The Greatest Comeback: How Richard Nixon Rose from Defeat to Create the New Majority
Holy Bible (KJV)
The Iliad
Moby Dick
Of Mice and Men
Pride and Prejudice
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea
Siddhartha
Slaughterhouse-Five
Steppenwolf
The Stranger
I got most of these from the charts on /lit/. My favorites are Moby Dick and the two Hesse books, Steppenwolf and Siddhartha. Any and all recommendations are welcome as I just finished Cat's Cradle (which I didn't enjoy very much to be honest, I liked Slaughterhouse-Five a lot more) and haven't started a new book yet.

Did you have a question?
Why is it better to have an English degree over a philosophy degree or some STEM? What's to be reaped from studying English or is it another hopeless major?
>>8651877
Better for what?
>>>/adv/
>>>/google job placements/
>>8651877
Getting an English degree is a waste of time and money. As worthless as a Philosophy degree.
It's good enough to show "Hey I made it through school!" so some places might hire you, but it doesn't have any usefulness outside of that.
Philosophy is fucking worthless. In fact, it may be the most worthless branch of literature period. I can just see you, Anon, frantically trying to correct me on this; "b-but what about black literature?", you say, hoping I'll be even slightly amused. But all memes aside, there have been plenty of black writers that you can point to who have written works that, while cliched and preachy, have at least standard prose. I can name at least two at the top of my head. Who are these philosophers who supposedly have "good" prose? Oh right, the ones who are barely philosophers. At the end of the day, all you fuckers have is Nietzsche. Imagine that. What does Nietzsche have on Joyce, Shakespeare, Woolf, or Kafka? Beyond that, what does Kant, the worst writer I've ever read, have on even the most pseud of pseud college kids, let alone Pynchon or Mann?
Then you tell me that it equates to some kind of "learning", or that it helps society progress in some way. Where have we progressed? Oh right, edgy atheist materialism and SJW bullshit. Face it folks. You can carry around "you can't never not know nuffin" or "u need to b urself Anon" in your pocket protector, but you'll still be a fat narcissist, sitting in your bedroom, arguing to yourself about Schopenhauer, hoping that, one day, someone will want to listen to your incoherent babble, or that they'll care about your well-constructed dialectics. Philosophy is only worth something when placed in the context of actually great literature
Anything that is valued objectively has value, by definition Anon...
Worth is determined only by what people think, people think philosphy has worth so by definition it does.
This by the way is something entry level philosophy could teach you

You have no skill and no knowledge. Do you even have a truth methodology?

I don't think it's worth anything, so it isn't.
What's some good gothic literature? I liked Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights and Poe.
Pic unrelated.
>>8651766
Go for the grandpappy of American gothic lit, Charles Brockden Brown. Wieland is a good starting place with him.

What are the core books of the post-apocalyptic genre, /lit/?
In fantasy there's Lord of the Rings, Poul Anderson, Conan, lots of others. In SF there's Foundation, Dune, more.
For movies, there's Mad Max, and Fallout in video games. But what did Fallout draw on to come up with that world?
>>8651708
Sorry, one other thought.
Is it possible that this is a literary genre that actually doesn't have foundational books? The Wasteland PC game is a major part of this genre, as is Mad Max, but I guess I'm just finding it unusual that, unlike fantasy and science fiction, there isn't a kind of 'greatest post-apoc book' that people would agree on.
There's lots of SF stuff that deals with the destruction of the world, and so on, but...well, anyways. Is it not strange that there is this literary genre that doesn't have a major book at the centre?
>>8651708
How is Lord of the Rings post-apocalyptic? There's an atmosphere of decline or things not being what they once were, but I don't know that it's attributable to any one event
there's max brook's books, i am legend, and the road from recently.
This guy has great prose, prove me wrong
He's a faggot.
Check. And. Mate.
Stale run-on sentences with redundant intrusions masquerading as decent prose. Try again.
>>8651701
That was a terrible sentence. But I still think Franzen and his prose are totally solid. Not op btw.
are amazon reviews literature?
Nah. Funny pic though XD
>>8651573
is this literature?
>>8651585
Sure. Why not?
Wat sum gud horse lit?
>>8651520
I'm actually reading that now. About halfway through at this point. If you can get over how wacky the premise of a Horse memoir is, it's not half bad.
>>8651520
I'd steer clear entirely. Trust me.
>>8651520
I'd recommend Nietzsche instead.
Preferably Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Terrible hairstyle.

Been reading a lot of Zola lately
What are some other good, lesser known French writers whose work is available in English?
Maybe you'd like Stendhal and Baalzac

who?
>>8651336
honore de balzac
Do you have a specific setup or place you go?
I'm really anal about it and have a hard time reading for long periods if the setup is not just right.
Lately I've been driving down to the waterfront park and parking at a secluded space with a good vantage, rolling down all the windows and curling up in the back with several pillows. It's fucking magic on a beautiful day. Settles both my guilt from not leaving my room/feeling isolated and dislike of cafes or lack of comfortable positions. plus I can bring any supplies I might need and easily move if something annoying is going on. Today I was there for 10 hours.
I find that I can read just about anywhere, which brings me comfort. There's no better way to escape the grips of reality than to pick up a good book.
>>8651363
Nigger, stop it with the trip. This isn't fucking Reddit, so quit. No one cares who you are. Congrats, you're actually now worse than gaskun.

Can /lit/ suggest any books about killing God. I don't mean some pretentious atheist philosophical babel but a story about the act of actually killing God.
>>8651240
His Dark Materials, though arguably it fits into your former category. The act of the killing itself was interestingly written though.
