One of these things us not like the others...

I wish I could find a book club that only reads books I want to read.

Nobodaddy's Children isn't bad.
It's not as weird as Schmidt's later works.

The Egghead Republic is pretty weird, and an easy read for those looking to get into him.

It's called Juarez, and it's probably not as bad any more. there is of course still crime in the bad parts, so dont go out without a legit guide that will sell your organs and leave you in an iced bathtub.

What do you wish you knew before you started reading? What do you think everyone should read and know? I'm concerned that even with the /lit/ recommendations the literature will go over my head. I want to read everything from novels to plays to poetry so I can be familiar with literary culture.

The sticky is mostly outdated so I'm asking you guys; I'm tired of being ignorant, /lit/, I want edification.

What other resources can you point out to me? Would a website like Goodreads be a good idea?

What can you do with an English degree?

I really don't want to go into teaching. I'm quite a nervous person and I don't think I could handle it.

My other concern is that I won't be able to pursue/capitalise on my interests. I know some have been able to teach and succeed creatively (pic related) but I don't believe I could.

I don't care about money. I only want to make my parents somewhat proud while being able to pursue other interests.

I ask because I'm sure many people on /lit/ are English graduates and I trust you more than I do my University's employment service.

If you want to write a novel, write a novel. Otherwise, work your way up at a museum, important library, media conglomerate or marketing company.

>"Sam Coll was born in 1989, in Dublin, Ireland. He graduated in English and Art History from Trinity College Dublin in 2011 and later obtained a Masters degree in Anglo-Irish literature, writing his dissertation on Samuel Beckett and sentimentality."

Excerpt:

>"At the same time, elsewhere. In Mount August Square. Where lies a tennis court round which looming lodgings stand stern, their brickwork choked by ivy, by vines that clog the fissures and strangle stone, and a glum dark park where, from the branches of the trees, dangle ropes tied into nooses. A fit site for suicides. In summertime, floating through air of square, one sees billowing by the blossoms of cherry trees, clogging the gutters, breezing into one’s nose, stirred to dance by gusts of wind. But there are none now; the court is empty; the trees are bare. Dead leaves, hangovers from the party’s close, lie around in a dull litter of sad damp clumps. Darkness reigns.

>"And into Mount August Square, a padding animal comes, with crooked back and burning eyes, coming through the soft night prowling mid the damp, with tentative scuttle. Hear the sound of the tread of its paws, to which some wet leaves stuck. Where are you going to, snowy my son? Where are you going to, my handsome young one? Many miles have you wandered, let loose from lair unwitting. You shiver as you stalk – for the spring your master hath wrought has not yet made it eastward. With the tang of meat in your mouth, the fangs and canines smeared by blood of man, mandibles you wetly scrubbed with all the floppy length of your tongue, licking quite clean your chops."

The simple alliteration and blatant influence, and more than the tone in which he's described by media, gives me the sense he's nothing special (unproven, anyway), but being sold to us in the same new-Joyce action figure packaging as Eimear McBride and Jack Cox. With Tom McCarthy there is at least a more diverse set of inspirations that don't overwhelm the flavors, and arguably accomplishes something genuinely novel, if only a tone.

It's pretty great if you can read Latin and understand what Virgil's doing.
http://virgilmurder.org/
>>
it is noticeably secondary to homer (up to the stuff like - achilles got a new set of arms made by hephaestus and explicitly described, therefore aeneas should get such a set made by vulcan and explicitly described too), the author sometimes couldn't hold the air of the mythical world ("nearing the cliffs of the Sirens, perilous of old"), the second part is imo rather a snoozefest (but it's pretty much like with "odyssey", imo it violates the unity of action, albeit aristotle didn't thought so about "odyssey"... the journey to return/to achieve the destination and settling the problems when you returned/achieved the destination are not the same action imo), aeneas is a milksop whose greatest heroic quality is obeying w/e the gods ordered him to do; it's prettily written though and has some stuff which affected the later european literature like his variant of visiting the world of death includes a prophesy about the future which was later used by ariosto and spenser and the very visit description inspired dante who didn't read homer etc

"metamorphoses" is better, "bucolics" and "georgics" are better too imo

I wonder what we would have had if Virgil had managed to complete his vision, instead of wanting the manuscript burnt after his death.
