Absolutely. When you go to the bookstore and see hundreds upon hundreds of titles, you need SOMETHING to catch your attention. A nice spine, or a recognizable name/publisher sets a book apart from the rest

>all these nonames

To everyone here who's capable of reading/writing/speaking/understanding two or more languages: how has this ability affected your development in these fields?

Do you read and comprehend a text equally well in each language, or have you prioritized one over the other?

Do you write in each, or have you decided to develop your language and techniques in one more than the other(s)?

If we assume that this kind of development does have an effect on your ability to understand, comprehend, formulate and express yourself and your ideas, do you think it has had a positive or negative effect at least in relation to monolingual people with the same level of education/exposure/intelligence?

As a follow up question, I'd like to know if any of you have ever contemplated the above situation. Have you ever been conscious or been made conscious of this fact?

Do you care, one way or the other, being from one camp or the other?
>>

I prioritized english (portuguese being my first) because it's global so if I want to get more information I'll need it the most
It has a negative impact on my mother tongue, speaking and writing wise. I can comprehend idioms but I never use them.
People with the same level of education but monolingual have a broader choice on words, idioms and ways to put things simply generally speaking, because when I was watching tv shows or reading in english they were all sucking the information in portuguese. But as I said, there's more information in english so I win in the quality of information.
I've never contemplated this actually. I have a clear example of 2 people I knew before that were like wordsmiths - very fast talkers, making plays on words etc, and now that I thought about it, they were both very bad at english
>>
>>8653767
i speak both english and german, with german being my first language.

i always wonder what language to read books in, usually decide on the language it was written in but if it's written in neither then i'll read the german version because my german is better than my english.

trying to study english more but it's kinda hard since school is way too easy and most books are a bit too hard.

Is Cormac McCarthy really fucking hard to read for someone that only learned English as his second language? I've read books from Oscar Wilde, Salinger or Joseph Conrad in the original language and rarely needed to look up a word and it felt just like reading a translation. I'm trying Blood Meridian but it is absolutely killing me, can barely make out one sentence without having to look up, all the words are so archaic. Should I just /give up/ and buy the translation?

I find his overuse of the word and to be annoying as fuck. It's like he despises periods.
>>
What is your native language?

Are you using an e-reader? I am reading it now and the obsolete words don't pester me too much. I actually enjoy the long periods and lack of quotation marks and commas, because it does affect the flow of the narrative in an interesting way.

Keep going, it is definitely worth your time.

Forgot to add that I'm also not a native speaker.

That's very bleak, isn't it? I can't exactly think of whole works which forward an ideal of total, irredeemable, carnivorous violence, but some writers have a tonal similarity:

Comte de Lautreamont, Baudelaire, Zola, Poe, some Blake, etc.

If Fairy tales have a moral to their story what is the point of little red riding hood?

Questions:
Why isnt she just called little red hood? She isnt riding anything so whats that about?

Nice girl brings food to grandmother who is murdered by a wolf then she gets eaten, what kind of moral is that to learn? To not be nice?

>The moral is not to be a trusting dipshit
I kind of thought that but it doesnt make sense. She was being nice bringing food to her grandmother and gets eaten by a wolf? She even calls out the wolf for being a wolf...

>Its a "riding hood"
Your just talking out of your ass like you have all the answers at this point. Or to play devils advocate if you have proof of this post it. The lone ranger, and other cowboys didnt wear hoods it would serve no purpose.

I have always wondered if it is the same wolf who blew down the house of the 3 little pigs,? Is this wolf some kind of message perhaps about the occult or demon worship given how not only can it blow a house down but shape shift into other people like her grandmother, perhaps its a warning about lizard people?

I feel like my life is falling apart. Everything is an illusion, my mind and body react to give impressions. I have no real drive. I have no desire to get to where others think I'm going. I like the emotions of social interactions, romantic connections, the feeling of working out, feeling alive, but these emotions are momentary, they do not motivate me enough. It might just be my structure, my predetermined genetic physiology, which somehow finds a way to not do anything. I want to stay home and die, be passive, read, but action, the thing that can bring happiness and fulfillment, is devoid of emotional fuel. It as if I've been already burned and I'm simply a dying ember who gets a whiff of wind once in a while. I can't wait for death. I can't wait for me doing nothing, yet nothing increases the feelings of despair. Life is a struggle, fighting through it brings rewards from character formation to an innate sense of well-being. Yet, even after experiencing it all, it still leaves me void. I may never get over it, I will passively keep going, maybe get a job, get my degree, engage and party, get married, and one day I will shake your hand. But only if you look past my eyes, smile and energetic personality, you will see my being wanting nothing but to end my existence.

Just start with the greeks for crying out loud. And youre crying about the parts of life that aren't even sad.
>>
>>8652040
I know those feelings.

There's always a way. Even if you'd prefer there not to be one. You'll find it, anon.

Reading helped me. People who were, if not as miserable, at least able to articulate things in a way that I thought wasn't full of shit in a way that 99% of life sometimes is.
>>
>>8652040
I can relate to these feelings quite well. You put it nicely when you describe yourself as an ember catching an occasional draft...

I've been through the motions myself. I thought certain things would improve my self esteem. Nothing has made me happy. I get little enjoyment from things... And I'm always left in that void you speak of, looking for the next thing that promises to improve my life. it's hard to do anything when your not being neurologically rewarded to do so. That's depression. ADHD can be similar that way.

Man's love is entirely narcissistic, i.e. he constitutes his idealized self-image in the gaze of an admiring woman. What he 'loves' in a woman is desirousness itself, not the actual concrete empirical female.

A woman loves a man insofar as he is a simulacrum of a full phallic presence that gives access to Orher-joiussance. She doesn't love the man for what he is either, i.e. weak, self-doubting etc.
>>
>>8651797
That's conflating lust with love though, which to be fair the majority of people do.
