Saw the trailer for this movie earlier today and found out that it's based on a book.
Anyone read the book?
>>8689347
I actually did. It's not really about the cat. It's actually about the author getting away from his heroin addiction. The prose is quite trash, but I don't know, I somewhat enjoyed it.
>>8689347
very loosely based on "Jennie" by Paul Gallico
> not really
>>8689347
It's a decent book, would reccomend
Is poetry a representation of narrative or is narrative a representation of poetry?
>>8689291
You don't know what representation means
>>8689291
I think the essence of narrative is essentially "telling story"
I think the essence of poetry is essentially "expression"
Narrative can be (is?) poetry
Poetry can be narrative
>>8689302
How am I using it incorrectly? The question is which mimics the other and thus is less real than the other. Its Platonic you dweeb.
>poetry class
>guest speaker, poet
>literal who
>cant articulate points whatsoever
>asks "Does that make sense" or "Right?" after every answer
>answers sound like third grade level essays
>takes 5 minutes to make his point that could've been made in one sentence
>"Right?"
>'I love Frost because... he's like a carpenter. His poems are like beautiful pieces of carpentry, but.. they have these dark energies.."
>"Writers block? Whenever I have it I just don't combat it. In fact, I went two years once without writing a single thing"
>pseudo-intellectual fag in our class keeps asking the pseudo-intellectual 'poet' questions then repeating back his answer word for word
>Girl asks a really good question
>"Man thats a great question.."
>proceeds to dodge the question entirely then turn to our teacher and say "Did that make sense?"
The worst part is I consider our teacher highly intelligent. He can recite hundreds of poems like its nothing, understands the meanings and backstories to all of them, and is generally an awesome guy. And he chose this fuckwit to speak to us.
Idk if he just comes off as a retard, but I was genuinely angry that I had to sit there for an hour and listen to this dipweed.
His name is Rick Barot, you can look up his stuff if you want. I thought one poem was decent, the rest were shit

I read novels as poems and poems as novels

Any advice for a philosophy major that has trouble focusing? I love philosophy and reading works, however since the writings can be so dense, it is very easy to lose focus on the train of thought that the philosopher is trying to convey.
Anyone take adderal to improve their reading comprehension or has been in my shoes?
Also adhd, add, and reading thread

Bump
>>8688798
The answer sucks but you just have to learn how to concentrate. There isn't a shortcut. Unless you take adderall, which is a bad habit and you'll find yourself needing it when you don't really NEED it

Why are good male writers so much more attractive than good female writers?
It's so rare that a good female writer doesn't look like a man or in general isn't an ugly POS.
There's a correlation between attractiveness and intelligence.
>>8688789
I've always figured that it had to do with fundamental differences of motivations.
Women writers usually write for validation, which is not unique to them.
Male writers, in addition to writing for validation, also write because they are trying to make a living and get laid, and the one's who make it are seen as attractive for their success.
>>8688799
Then explain female writers intelligent enough to actually write great literature are generally far less attractive than those who can't.

What does /lit/ do, when they feel the nihilistic dread?
Read some Leopardi to strengthen the emotion

Hey /lit/, I'm at a bit of a loss on how to put this delicately, so I'll be direct.
What should I read to help to help me deal with my inability to get pounded by a huge anthropomorphic wolf?
Pic related can only go so far.
Lolita, my nigger.

I already read that one, what should I be taking from it besides an appreciation for really neat prose?

So, after reading this review of Jerusalem, I've decided to grab a copy of it and prepare my anus. BUT which copy of it is the best, the American or the British?
The American is bigger and have 30 more pages, but the British version has a nice dust cover. I trust that the number of pages is only due to the American version having larger letters, and not due to any other factor. But I'm not sure? Maybe there's an introduction included? I don't really care about the size of the letters or the thing itself, but if there's an introduction in one version or if one has nicer paper or is better constructed I'd rather get that one. So do any of you know if there's actually a difference?
Also, feel free to discuss Jerusalem in general.
>>8688560
What review did you read?
I have UK edition and literally can't read it, type is too small and printing/paper isn't great and comes off on your hands. Used a comics publisher. Oldfag but not that oldfag... Buyer beware.
>>8688560
Dust jackets are to be thrown away unless the book is valuable. Jerusalem will never be valuable.
So I'm getting into /lit/ again after years and I'm having a hard time with it, I tried starting with Dostoevskij but it's too heavy and long for now. This period I'm quite depressed and apathetic, I need something emotional, something strong, maybe with a mundane urban setting, a book with light moments but not shallow and superficial. Something that will make me love literature and life again. Thank you very much for your time
