Is there a "state of currently valid philosophy" like for example in biology with 'scientific' consensus?
If so how do I learn it? Does an introduction into philosophy that will allow me to understand at least what it's about exist that is actually worth something?
The closest things to what you ask are in applied ethics:
https://www.wma.net/policies-post/wma-declaration-of-helsinki-ethical-principles-for-medical-research-involving-human-subjects/
But philosophy is about the questions.
>>10021655
Not really, as very little philosophy is actually used for anything. On the other hand, a properly-maintained "scientific consensus" for biology is important as it informs a lot of thought, laws/regulation and technology. So it needs to be accurate and highly scrutinised.
Really validity is a philosophical thing, you can be valid within a given path of thought and/or corresponding application but not objectively, for all.

Tried reading this for the third time and I just can't get past the first 30 pages or so of this monster without wanting to pull my hair out. Is there something else I could read that might better prepare me for tackling this thing once and for all?
>>10021550
The first 100/150 pages most people find very difficult in comparison to the rest of the book. Apparently something Gass did purposefully so only certain people would read the whole thing.
Reading earlier works of his to familiarise yourself with his style would help: Omensetters Luck is usually recommended but I'd say 'In the Heart of the Heart of the Country' the collection by Nyrb would be a better choice; gives you an idea of his more realistic style in 'The Pedersen Kid' - which reappears in the tunnel in the sections about Planmantee's daughter, Uncle Balt etc. - and of his more experimental works: 'icicles, and the titular story.
Despite what certain people on here will tell you the tunnel is very much worth reading and you should persevere
It seems like I can download any book from Springer and Apress just by copy/paste the DOI and look in http://93.174.95.27/scimag/index.php
I wonder why this method doesn't work for books from World Scientific?

I've this nagging feeling that if I don't learn French, my life is gonna be a waste. Well, suppose I finally decide on this time-consuming endeavour, what could possibly go wrong as a consequence? Is the necessary level for reading, say, the pic related even achievable? And how long, do you think, it would take?
On a side note, what does it feel like when you read in French, in comparison to English?
>>10021461
>And how long, do you think, it would take?
The it is a fluid concept. You will be reading long before you read fluently understanding nuance and without having to use a dictionary.
Two hours of study per day means 730 hours in a year. That's a steady foundation, and by that point you can certainly already be on your way working through Les Misérables if you wish. Also, don't neglect pronunciation. Read out loud to yourself. Don't start reading Les Misérables (or some other novel of choice) too early because frustration can be a motivation killer.
Assimil French with Ease is a good beginner course followed up by Assimil Using French after that. Fun dialogues, stress-free learning, and an easy way to practice your pronunciation by repeating the dialogues. Also get a (slim) grammar book for reference.
>what does it feel like when you read in French, in comparison to English
I read fluently in eleven languages, but this question doesn't really make sense to me. Does understanding in different languages feel different? I don't think so. It feels good to learn to understand new things, it feels good to reflect on what you've learned and what abilities you've cultivated, but just in the ordinary practice (doing) of reading, I don't think feels are language-specific.

>read fluently in eleven languages
Do tell, anon, how'd you get about doing that?
Would love to see where your foundations were placed
t. current French and soon-to-be Spanish abecedarian
French is worth it, no doubt. French literature is the only literature that gives English literature a run for its money... well, up until people like Derrida and Foucault started to be published. It's been mostly shit since then. Even Houellebecq's nowhere near as good as the earlier writers, though he's still great reading. He's very easy in French for a beginner, by the way.
