/lit/ what should I read if I want to understand capitalism and socialism?
Marx for capitalism. Ayn Rand for socialism.
is there some sort of unbiased summary of both ideologies and their differences, history etc? i understand that its either one or the other but there has to be something
>>8751360
No. You are going to have to read plenty of socialist and capitalist ideologues and theorists. Then you can start to get a grasp on it and you will realise most people are completely ignorant when it comes to political
And economic positions

Can someone explain what Scott thinks Moloch actually is? I have read it twice and I still don't completely understand his conclusion. I'm a bit new to reading in case you were wondering.

Blood Meridian or Suttree. But it would have to be done properly and I don't think you can entertain a mass audience and really stay true to either book

I don't really care if you spill your secret knowledge or not. I'm not from this board and never will be. Your traditions and rituals mean nothing to me. I only asked for information. If you're not willing to give it, well, I'll just continue watching TV.
>>8750992
go right ahead then. you know thats what you really want to do anyway
hai /lit/,
I need a favor from someone who goes to a University of California institution, and since I've heard your board has a higher reate of uni students, I figured I would ask here. I'm after the ebook version of this book
http://ucla.worldcat.org/title/ghunyat-al-labib-inda-ghaybat-al-tabib/oclc/610015304?referer=di&ht=edition,
but it seems you need UC student access to download it. If one of you could send it to [email protected], I'd be eternally grateful. I don't have much to offer in return, but I have a gift key for Terraria on Steam that you could probably exchange for something more interesting.
a-anyone?
Does your university library have an interlibrary loan service?
If not, or if your doesn't have any partnerships with the UC system, try contacting UC's ILL directly, explaining your academic affiliation, and asking whether they might make an exception in either scanning for you or sending you the ebook copy
I work in ILL (not at that uni though) and it's pretty informal sometimes, we'd probably at least consider it
>University of California
I'm sorry for your loss... :'(
>book has epilogue
>book is written by Tolstoy
>chapters have names instead of numbers

I'm reading the New Testament (Recovery Version cause it was free) for the first time, and I'm only part way through Matthew, but From what I've read so far, the Jews of the time seem to be similar to most organized religion today. Like some of the things Jesus was critical of the Pharises for doing, such as the materialism of the church body itself, and the public prayers, seem to be practiced widely today.
Is this something discussed? Or am I misinterpreting it?
nigga pls
>>8750704
the New Testament was written about 1,500 years after the old testament, which wasn't a book but a collection of scrolls.
>>8750704
Usual historical criticism is that Jesus was not interested in founding a new religion with himself as the redeeming savior; hat came with Paul and whoever wrote John.
Instead he was in favor of reforming second temple Judaism from the temple centric mode Run by a priest caste and financed by a hellenized elite to an egalitarian religion as seen in his writings. If you want to understand some more of his thought process a study of the Essenes is suggested, as they were doing the same thing, except in a monastic form.
Of course within 40 years the point was moot because Paul and Christianity took on a life of its own and second temp,e Judaism was thoroughly reformed by the Romans.

To celebrate the fact that one of the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises is finally over. Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.
>a-at least the books were good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
