I just found out that I'm a stoic
Is that a good thing?
Do you put wicker seats or a swing on your stoa?
>>8776390
Yes, for it makes your more eccentric, which is good.

How do I learn to write and get the same knowledge a literature degree holder has without going to college?
Most people tell me to study programming rather than learning to write literature.
>>8776330
Read books and criticism, you dense helpless faggot
>programming
How dull
Programming is the most noble of all modern human activities, for it combines the precision of STEM and creative sprawl of humanities. Go for it, and study literature for pleasure
>>8776330
Programming is fine, it is both entertaining and technical. Just make sure you get some UX Design and Development experience so you can become more than a code monkey.
Tons of people get programming jobs without a degree and tons of people write without a degree. If you're worried about learning both, just pursue a degree in the field you're least likely to learn on your own.

/lit/ Im looking to have a career in journalism and writing, what are some good books that you can recommend I read? Where do I start in regards to writing? Does anyone here work in the writing/editing/publishing industry and have any tips or advice for me?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated c:
Also pic related somewhat, its my favourite book. I think it really shows a different side to thompson than most people are used to. Really worth the read if you havent read it already or have only Fear and Loathing in las vegas.
I was once like you. I got a journalism degree and spent a few years as a subeditor.
Spoiler: don't do journalism, it's a waste of fucking time. The industry is fucked beyond repair.

What do you do now?

Pharmaceutical engineer. My background in technical checking was my way into the industry. Pays a lot more as well.
How do I get into writing poetry /lit/?
just start reading poetry, then start writing poetry
Write prose
Now, replace all nouns with metonyms
Replace all verbs with fancier verbs
Smack that 'enter' a few times till the whole thing looks like a neat skyscraper
Also do this
Fuck-

Shit, really impressive
----------------- end with a sad statement about human nature

i guess it is alright when you have tried all things of value and want to see what those who have no value do.
you can learn why right things are right by seeing wrong ones.
Let's make a list of cliches, painful or otherwise.
I'll start.

I just want to read a good book
1984
Catch-22
Atlas Shrugged
>>8775635
ovetly political books are weird for me, so imma have to give them a pass. especially Ayn
Read 1984 if you're a libfag, read Atlas Shrugged if you're a /pol/fag, read Catch-22 if you're a well adjusted individual.
>>8775647
THanks
I think Ill go with 1984 and catch22 very likely but my main worry is about the Atlas one
I read a summary of it and what kind of a book it should be, and Im really not sure as Im not that into politics either.
Can you recommend a third book to go with the two, one that would be a nice comfy classic that would fall to the category of "read if youre a well adjusted individual" as well.
Since I made this thread, Ill ask away
Are all of hemingways books similar in writing style? There were things in for whom the bell tolls, that I disliked and wonder if most of his books are quite similar in writing style, I felt like they were a bit too slow for anything to happen or something like that.
What's /lit/'s opinion of Kurt Vonnegut?
HE thinks he's funny and a biting satirist, emphasis on the he. He also reeks of communism and socialism. Early works are his best.
>>8775587
we used to love him
He's the thinking man's Douglas Adams.
So how would you guys call the current stage of the philosophical development? What could be the main factors setting trends in the current era (say, starting from the 21st century)? Is it all about the rise of digital technologies?
>>8775515
Acce-le-ra-tion time, come on!
>>8775515
21st century is nostalgia
Digitalism and finding a new basis to build our philosophy on.
Considering that pomo swagboys like Derrida and Baudrillard completely destroyed philosophy I suggest we start with the latter.
