Recently picked up this, have yet to read it. Actually good in terms of getting a general knowledge, or are there better ones?
>>8818775
It's very readable, but I've forgotten almost everything I learnt when I read it only a year ago. Maybe that's my fault though.
>>8818775
It's very comfy. Have no idea about the accuracy though and I don't care.
>>8818775
it's not /lit/, but it's good for what it is

Are the old and new testament by Everyman Library worth it?
>>8818745
i don't know what translation they are but if you're going to have separate books for the old and new testaments you may as well have the Lattimore translated new testament.
>>8818814
KJV.
>>8818745
You could get a hardcover study bible for much less than buying the Everyman volumes. I have pic related. Won't be as A E S T H E T I C though. If you want them, just go for it. Everyman is a very cool publisher and they'll look sweet on the shelf. A study bible might be more practical for actually reading, however.

What does /lit/ think of Baudrillard?
>>8818531
is he an animorph
>>8818533
Yes. He morphs into an illusion, and from this illusion his true essence can be discerned.
>>8818531
Not much, but he seems appreciated by edgy types.

Are there any books that go over the modern western culture around conversation and how isolating it can be?
That depends on what you mean by "around conversation." Could you provide an example?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf-r8G-7Bew
>>8818492
Just simple things like when and where it's normally okay to talk to someone and when it's not. Things like personal conversation and the like. I'm not sure how else to put it, moving from a small town to a big city it's sort of bewildering seeing how little people talk to eachother when they're all so compacted.
I guess if we're to be specific, say a train car.
why haven't you read this fine masterpiece

My mum had it in her handbag when she was murdered. Just brings back bad memories.

>post picture of romantic poet
>hurr this guy amazing
>ya he gud
>he write pretty
>ad nauseam
Now fuck it let's talk about some meaning:
>My heart, my heart is weary,
>Yet merrily beams the May
>And I lean against the linden.
>High up on the terrace gray.
>The town-moat far below me
>Buns silent and sad, and blue ;
>A boy in a boat floats o'er it,
>Still fishing and whistling too.
>And a beautiful varied picture,
>Spreads out beyond the flood,
>Fair houses, and gardens, and people,
>And cattle, and meadow, and wood.
>Young maidens are bleaching the linen,
>They laugh as they go and come ;
>And the mill-wheel is dripping with diamonds
>I list to its far away hum.
>And high on yon old gray castle
>A sentry-box peeps o'er ;
>While a young red-coated soldier
>Is pacing beside the door.
>He handles his shining musket,
>Which gleams in the sunlight red,
>He halts, he presents, and shoulders :
>I wish that he'd shoot me dead.
What did he fucking mean by this?

I don't know but I'm hoping there's gonna be a meme in this thread so I can be included in the screen cap for predicting it
>>8818318
I like that writing, though he seems to be saying very little apart from 'i am depressed'
BUT MUH HULY BUUK
I really like Larry david. what literature for that?
http://www.seinfeldscripts.com/
>>8818265
Kafka
Dostoevsky
Bulgakov
>>8818265
Kafka or celine come to my mind. Kafka because double binds and celine because dark humor. I wish I knew some contemporary writer who was a funny, intellectual, dick but I dont, and im not sure if there are any. DeLillo can be funny in similar ways regarding language and stuff (like that one episode where jason alexander writes the book acting without acting) but he's not anything like david really.
So I just ordered this online. What should I expect and how should I tackle it? I heard you don't read it from cover to cover, but rather in short, random snippets.
>>8818255
Get the Terrel companion.
You will need it.
>>8818255
you could just read it online and see, in 20 seconds you would know exactly what it was
>>8818310
I have and I found it quite enjoyable. I just feel I won't fully appreciate it until I have a tangible copy in my hands.

>come up with absolute genius idea for a book

>create a huge, sprawling outline that beautifully ties in all the ideas I came up with
>prose still sucks
Holy fuck, /lit/ how do you improve your prose? What writers should I read? My style game is lagging so far behind my substance game right now. Should I just say fuck it and pull a Dostoevsky?
>>8818218
read more. pick your favorite stylists and imitate their qualities that you like the most. write until your prose becomes something you could call your own.
hope this helps but desu /lit/ isnt for pussies so really the best thing to do is to stop crying on the internet and start doing something you fucking faggot.
>>8818218
The problem is that you haven't realized that the prose is the story. The prose develops with the evolution of the work. No works worthwhile come from a pre fab design, they're built. Language is the work itself, anon, not the idea or plot. I recommend Gass' non fiction.
>>8818232
